you may wish you had replaced both fr. & rear bearings as well as the 2nd gear / i have had a 48 chev stylemaster sence i was age of 14 , i am now age of 62 . your trans must have been a low mileage unit , if you do not replace both bearings and the 2nd gear it may roar as you drive then it will start jumping out of 3rd gear, ever time i had my trans out the bearings needed replaced , best to replace each part that you can find when you have it apart / yours looked to be in great shape !! i have used my 48 as a dayly driver off and on my whole life A GOOD CAR ! i still run babbit rods and six volts with no problems , i reworked my trans in 1984 , the 1st one done in 1976 and i did run a used one for a while paid $35 for it . things have sure changed ! a good car when drove write nice video !

Well 1941 Chevy pickup stick shift is different animal,just bottom 2 gear tree have blind hole in box where you derive in locating pin! Must mark shaft at the front in correct position to the hole,5 attempts in my case to do that and control 2x thrust washers,one each side. Now we going to assy back 3 gear tree with rollers each side and thrust washers!!! above first set just finished!!! What challenge !!! Next time boys.........nightmare what I see.

I have been working on old cars, trucks and farm equipment my entire life, but the level of understanding I get from your videos has increased my knowledge exponentially! My 1941 Master Deluxe coupe, which still has the functioning vacuum shift, will bump going from 2nd to 3rd if you get in a hurry. Shift slowly and it’s fine. Is it fairly safe to assume this is likely a worn syncronizer? I had hopes it might be simply an adjustment on the shift rods, but seeing those synchros on the same gearset causes me to doubt that.

This was very helpful. What happens if the brass synchro rings are worn and need to replaced? How are they removed and replaced? They are available online.

I founed on Ebay a seller for the BRASS Synchros 1937 to 1950s. they would have to be PRESS in after removed the old ones.

Answering my own question for others in hopes that it helps them repair. I took my new synchro rings and associated old parts to a transmission shop and talked nicely to them. They removed the old ones and pressed new ones on/in. Wouldn't take any $, but I gave them a gift card for their trouble.

I did that on this vehicle but it took all of a few minutes to do it. However I still have the car in the shop and could easily make a video going over the process. Maybe within a few weeks I could get something up.

I removed the side cover of the trans on my 1948 Fleetline. I just inspected the gears and replaced the cover, no further disassembly. I tried to put it back the way you do in your video, but now I can't find neutral. Not sure what I'm doing wrong. Should I pull it off the car again and maybe send you some pics? I'm anxious to fire the newly rebuilt motor but obviously can't really do that with the trans in gear. Well, I could but it'd be messy. Thanks for whatever insight you can provide.
@TheJayhawker

Is this a project that you have been driving, or is this the first time you will have tried it? If you know it was already working, I would take the cover back off and make dead certain that everything lines up perfectly. Be sure the large sliding 1st/reverse gear is in line with the shifter forks of the cover. If you haven't driven the car yet, test the shifters with the cover off the car and see if everything moves. Also slide the gears inside the transmission to make sure they are free. You probably have already watched Part 1 of the disassembly of the transmission. At about 7:30 on the video I go through how the gears work. (my video skills sure needed polishing then)
@tootsweet4us

Thank you. Yes, it was a driver before I tore it all down. The body is still off but everything else is back on the frame. The steering column and shifter is still off, but I can slide the linkage by hand with some effort and can feel it slotting. I didn’t do a complete disassembly, I just removed the cover, rinsed things out a little with gasoline, and spun things around to make sure no teeth were missing. I’ll pull it again and make sure it’s going back like the video. I’m also not 100% sure of the position of the secondary smaller mechanism which is forward of the main one. Thanks for your time and insight.

I don't off hand, check ebay and swap meets. A lot of old car parts suppliers keep salvaged parts as well so you might give some of them a call. In Wichita, Ks there is a place called Bowtie Bits that may have what you need.

Hi There - Hope you are well. I'm wondering if you got the 1948 Chevy Fleetline transmission pictures I sent to your email. If so, do you have any thoughts on whether I have things going back together as they should or what needs to be different? I'm still not convinced that the smaller mechanism is correct, but not sure what needs to change. I can resend the pics if they went to your spam folder. Thanks for whatever insight you can offer.

@@willyg6545 Put the cover in a vise and see if the slides work as they are supposed to, that is see if it seems to shift. If so, are you sure you're not having trouble getting the tangs of the slides in line with the gears? Not trying to insult you, just difficult to diagnose something without seeing it in person.

@TheJayhawker
@TheJayhawker 2 жыл бұрын
Yep, gear oil. Some have a plug on the side, some you have to fill through the speedo gear like I did. Just fill until it's almost up to the hole. Use a small allen key in the hole like a dipstick.
