Just replaced glass for a friend. Donor clock was given to me. Pulled motor which worked only sporadically. Took it apart a d found someone had solder repaired a gear but solder had migrated into gear teeth and lot of spatter on surface. Used razor to remedy that. Cleaned all, lite thin oil on pins. Runs smooth and quiet now. Am ordering, 3/32" optical Lucite to cut and drilling motor now good. Finish is poor so I will paint high gloss black epoxy Enamel. Great video!

Hello. I have my grandfathers Golden Clock. I had it repaired, twice, by the same clock repairman but each time it worked only a couple weeks. Took it to another shop and the motor was replaced and it worked for about 14-16 months. Now, the hands do not move but I can hear the motor (softly, with my ear close). I cannot justify spending $150.00 for the forth time. Is there anything I can try to get it going? The hands more easily enough but will not move with time.

$150 repair should have put the clock back "on its legs" for many years. Replacement of the motor isn't exactly rocket surgery; it involves removing 4 screws and 2 wire nuts. If you hear the motor working, it's possible that it has a damaged plastic gear - I demonstrated the repair in this video: kzbin.info/www/bejne/bIbYfK2BorGbnMU Perhaps you could try to fix it yourself? Personally, I think most people would be able to do it even if it's their first ever clock repair. Just remember to unplug the cord when the plastic bottom plate is removed. Another option, besides repairing the original motor, is to replace it with a brand new one. New motors are offered on ebay and other websites, but you'd need to order the correct one of the two types used. You would need to remove the bottom plate (2 screws) and look at the type of your motor. Mine had the shape of the digit 8, and older clocks have motors shaped like a teardrop - the two types are not interchangeable. Sorry about your trouble. Good luck!

@@tektech1065 Thank you so very much for your response! I didn’t actually expect to get one. 🤣. I will look in the next few days at the motor to see what model it is. And I will more carefully listen to you repair video. Thank again!

@@lauralenihan8761 I would suggest that if your motor looks like the one in my video, and since your clock is not working anyway, before you spend money on a new motor, try to open the "8"-shaped housing of your old one and see if the plastic gear has stripped teeth. Then you could get replacement gear from the Intermatic timer (very popular) I disassembled in that video. It might be available on Amazon, ebay, or in thrift stores. Other timers could have completely different parts. FYI, older Jefferson clocks have red bottom plates and may have the teardrop shaped old style motors. Most clocks with black bottom plate are newer and have the "8"-shaped motor.

Thank you for this information. I have a Jefferson clock as well. Where do you find replacement motors?

Try ebay, if you search for a brand new motor. There are at least two different types of motors used in these clocks. I was able to fix mine, and I showed the repair in part [1/2]: kzbin.info/www/bejne/bIbYfK2BorGbnMU

@@tektech1065 Thank you for responding. I can hear the motor running. I thought possibly it may be weak. I will search as you suggested on eBay. The clock is not keeping time at all. It could have other issues. Again...Thank you.

After watching your video, I will pull the motor to check for missing teeth on the gear. I have a mechanical Intermatic timer I can use if needed.

Great video! I just acquired a Golden Hour and am beginning to repair it…quick question for you if you might know. When I turn the minute hand to set the time, it brings the weight on the back and the hour hand along with it, moving the entire apparatus (as opposed to just the minute hand such as in this video). If I attempt to turn the hour hand, it provides resistance and doesn’t bounce at the end of a full rotation like at 1min 24sec of your video. I am turning the hands the correct direction. Do you know what might be broken? The motor works, so I’m hoping fixing the mechanical side will restore it to working condition.

"Bugsy's Dad Enterprises" posted a very informative video about correct assembly of the hands mechanism kzbin.info/www/bejne/Y6TbmIlnfZuKgpY The minute hand (the longer one on front side of glass) is the one which should resist turning. It has a clutch pressing it to the glass plate. But you can safely turn it to adjust the time. The hour hand (behind the glass) should be moving freely - with no resistance - in 1-hour "jumps" when the teardrop shaped counterweight with gears inside falls down. Since you say that you just acquired the clock, I'm thinking that perhaps someone attempted repair and reassembled some parts incorrectly? It's just my guess. I don't know. Please, refer to kzbin.info/www/bejne/Y6TbmIlnfZuKgpY Good luck!

@@tektech1065 Thank you so much! I ordered some fresh fiber washers so hopefully that helps some, but it seems to still be resistant to turning. I'm still on the hunt to see if I can fix it! Thanks much for the reply, I'll check out the second video and hopefully will have some answers soon.
