I've been super out of luck trying to get the billy bookcase with oxberg doors and I think this may be my solution! I was really worried about trying to work with glass so I'm super excited to work with acrylic instead. I'm going to use this to put a door on basically any decent bookshelf I can find. Thanks so much for the detailed video, it helps a lot for people like me who don't know what they are getting in to:)

Great Video, thanks for the walkthrough. Exactly what I’m looking to do on the bookcase I keep my retro games on. Same reason because there is now a little one crawling around the house. One quick suggestion. You may want to use the wood screws on the side of the hinge that connects to the cabinet instead of the machine screw. Use a drill bit smaller than the screw and the wood screws with the wider teeth will bite into the material. Thanks again!

Great video and help to the community. I used the same hinges a couple years ago on the larger Pax and they are still holding strong today. 3 hinges per sheet. Only thing I would add to this is if you dont have a dremel tool or dont want to drill yourself, for being too afraid of cracking the sheet, you can have the plastics company drill the holes and the semi-circle for you. No extra cost and if they mess up, you get a new sheet.
@BAMCollectibles

Thanks for the input man! Glad they're still holding up strong as I've had the same experience. Your plastics company was nicer than mine haha, they wanted to charge me for that so I took matters into my own hands, glad I did 4 doors later haha

Thanks a lot for making these videos, especially this one and the reinforced shelves one. Followed your instructions to the letter and still managed to mess up quite a bit with the hinge positioning when drilling holes. But that's alright lol. Still worked out in the end. One thing I thought I would share is I had some issues with the acrylic closing all the way. It might be because I only have 3 hinges for a ~37" wide door. In any case, I just added some adhesive magnets on the acrylic/Pax and that did the trick. I also added an adhesive pull handle. It was a little ugly but I can tolerate it.

@sethv.1349
@sethv.1349 3 жыл бұрын
Here's a follow up on some durability concerns. The holes drilled into the acrylic need to be wide enough for the baseplate to come all the way through with its' plastic buffer, not just the screws. You'll need a larger bit than 3/16" for this. The plastic pieces are meant to sandwich the acrylic rather than putting all the pressure on the screw holes themselves, which over time will increase the risk of the acrylic cracking. According to the instructions, the minimum width of your glass or acrylic needs to be 5mm for these particular hinges to properly sandwich. 3/16 (.1875) inches is only 4.7mm, so go with the 1/4 inch thickness.

Thanks bro!! If you recall in my first video there’s a small portion where my daughter is hitting the sheet of acrylic with a plastic sword. Even with that action she didn’t make a scratch on it. But as the other person said even if it gets scratched there are solutions out there to buffer out anything to make it look new or close to. Weight wise I’d say they’re 20-25 lbs each. I would absolutely never consider glass for my cases. Because I have a child and she can get crazy with toys I don’t want they risk in my home. I’d have to say after owning them as well...even if I didn’t have a child I’d go for Acrylic doors over glass to save money and have more durability. Hope this helps man!

You obviously didn't know, so I have to make a note here. 17:34 The screws with small threads are for metal with threaded holes, they won't hold long in the wood. Screws with bigger and more spaced out threads are for wood, especially the pointed ones. Better replace the screws if your door didn't fall off yet)

If you want to make the edges of the acrylic look better, you can use a quick pass with a blow torch to get them clear for you. And from a friend who had bought some old display cases from stores to refurbish, one thing you can also do is get some of the thin acrylic cement and put a few drips on the interior of the holes you put in for screws before putting them in and you'll have a more secure piece in the end. his weren't just held up by the hinges though...and the cases were the type you see in jewelery stores that are waist high, and the glass was damaged when they got pulled out of wherever they had been and he has a fossil collection in them...he replaced the glass with a heavy acrylic for the exterior and the shelves...along with added a few extra shelves, and while it doesn't fuse the acrylic like the glue does between sheets, it semi-melts it enough that it fills in around the screw enough that it's far more sturdy.

Very informative video. I wanted two cases for my WW2 military vehicle collection. Went online and found they wanted $2000 per case. Your video encouraged me to build my own. I plan to make a video of this build. Please wish me luck. Here are a few suggestions. When drilling two pieces of wood, I clamp them together. To get the right depth when I drill, I use a tool called a depth gauge. After deciding where I want to drill a hole, I use a smaller drill bit to make a pilot hole. The particleboard is not solid enough if you plan to place heavy objects in the case. If you have the items you want to put in the display case, I suggest you weigh them; using a bathroom scale. Nice to know just how much weight you are dealing with. My comment is only how I do things. Your mileage may vary.

Do you think a ticker sheet will be more easy to control when opening and closing ? If a magnet was to be placed where would you think it will be best at ?
@BAMCollectibles

If you have the funds I would definitely go with the ticket 1/4" as it's more sturdy feeling and less flimsy. Not to say that 3/16" doesn't workm but after owning both I'd spend the extra for 1/4". If I decide to add a magnet I would line it up with where my shelves are at so it would hopefully blend in well. I will do some testing and report back on video 3 for sure. If you find out any info yourself please feel free to share (^_^)/

Hi, first of all it is amazing the work that you did on this. How much do you estimate you spent with all these add-ons? for just one piece of furniture from ikea? Another question, have you ever use the model Detolf from Ikea to build a display? Couldn't find any tutorial on your channel, do you know any good tutorial you can recommend?

Hi thank u for the great info. I was wondering on the acrylic door. Whats the thickness u r using? And how do i measure the door? Exactly same measure as the pax ill be getting? Also, i know pricing will be different by store and location I'll be using but just wondering how much it cost you for the doors. Thank u a lot!

Hey there! At 3 min and 20 seconds in I did provide the exactly measurements used for this size PAX. Hopefully that helps and feel free to ask for any further clarification. If you can afford I would recomend the 1/4" thick over the 3/16" but so far both work fine for me.

I have a couple questions. I have cabinets that are thinner than yours and mounted to a wall. In a couple instances my statue bases might hang over the edge by like half an inch, does this sit essentially flush with the cabinet? Also, would those hinges fit a single sheet of 1/8th inch acrylic? Thank you!

Your videos are awesome and have inspired me to modify a few of these Pax shelves myself! A few quick questions for you: 1) how is the 3/8" acrylic holding up over time? the price on acrylic has gone up significantly and I would like to use 3/8" if you haven't had any issues 2) how much dust accumulates in the cases with the acrylic? 3) Any ideas of where to find LEDs for the 29.5" Pax? Thank you!
@BAMCollectibles
@BAMCollectibles 4 жыл бұрын
Yea it’s definitely gone up because of demand for acrylic blockers at businesses to keep customers distant from workers. 1. Holding up perfectly, no bends or bows in it. 2. I only have to dust like once mayybeeee twice a year 3. LED consumers sadly change all the time. What works once month may not another. You’ll have so personal research to likely find some. Best of luck and cheers man!

It’s not 100% dust proof as it’s not sealed but I only need to dust every 1-2 years, even then it’s such a small layer of dust. I’m sure if you got measurement a tad tighter you could 100% dust proof it.

Amazing video. I happened to come across it randomly while researching display cases from G.A.C. I mostly have detolfs myself and an inherited large display case. I was looking up the size of a few of my sadly still boxed figures (First4figures and a bunch of GAC ones) , and right there on the page was the video I needed. I do have one question if it's not too much of a bother: I'm from Europe and since we use cm I converted your measurements (193,675 and 71,12 cm). Now since these are "weirder" numbers, I was wondering how much leeway there is on the doors. Would it be better to get the exact measurements or could I shave off the few millimeters. Also am I correct in assuming the door rests against the display case and not in it?
@BAMCollectibles
@BAMCollectibles 3 жыл бұрын
Cpt Ragnarok Happy you found it! It rest on it and not in it for sure. Those CM conversions do seem a bit off, maybe try an online converter tool? Also shaving some off would be very difficult to do in a clean way without a professional large acrylic blade table saw.
@CptRagnarok
@CptRagnarok 3 жыл бұрын
@@BAMCollectibles Hey man, thanks for the reply! Oh sorry, I should specified, the conversions were from online tools. I've double checked with a few tools and outside of rounding (193,68 as opposed to 193,675), they seem to match. If I were to get plates made, should I go with these measurements or could I get away with rounding down to the nearest 0,5 up or down? It might not be an exact science but I'm neurotic that way.
@BAMCollectibles
@BAMCollectibles 3 жыл бұрын
Cpt Ragnarok I would 100% recommend messing things yourself to anyone honestly. If you have the PAX unit or whatever you’re trying to mount a door to just measure it. I cut mine so that it perfectly covered the inner part of the case and not the outside of it, or the frame of the case and it’s always worked out for me.

If i don't want to drill into the acrylic , can i just use some 3M command seals for attaching hinge to acrylic? Those things are rated for about 10lbs per strip. So with 3,that's like 30lbs.

Hey there and welcome to the channel! I swear by PAX display cases being the BEST for 1/8 scale statues. The depth the offer is perfect for them. In regards to you moving frequently they are a bit difficult to travel with but I'm sure you can work it out. Depending on your statues you may want to get a 29" wide PAX or a 39" wide PAX. All the best and I wish you great success (^_^)
