As someone who lives in and drives a Model 3 in Interior Alaska, you should open your app and turn on the heat / defrost full blast at least 15 minutes before you know you will get into it. That will solve your window issue.

Feeling bad for those poor summer pirelli tires. Its not the car that complains about tires (it doesnt matter what car you have, it will perform the same), its the tires themselves. Those are designed to work in over 40f (~7c) weather and not in snowy/slushy/muddy conditions. Definitely change them out before winter time if you wanna enjoy the ride and keep you and others safe. Cheers

Thanks for the video Dave. I live in the canadian prairies and we get some nasty winter weather and very cold temps. I am really curious about how well the heat pump works to heat the cabin. Is it slower/ not as warm as an ICE?

Hey dave! Copypasted this from your part1... Appreciate the video, always nice to see beautiful snowy conditions... can't wait for the snow here in Sweden. I notice as many others did many "beginner mistakes"! Tip 1: preheat the car for about 60mins, don't use maximum heat since windshield might crack with that much snow on top and if you have a stone chip or small crack allready. Tip 2, try to charge all night so battery keeps warm, yours was cold since charging was already complete Tip 3: don't use windshield wipers or windows before clearing snow and ice... can break. For the Windows you can use an old credit card to slide between the rubber and window to clear any ice-buildup. Wipers you can brush of the snow and manually slap(with caution) against the windshield to clear some ice. Tip 4: it's your car but please just slap the boots together to release snow rather then kicking your beautiful car... Tip5: don't use performance tires in the cold, they suck on snow and ice and they get badly damaged from the cold since that type of rubber is not made for those temps. Tip 6: when driving in snow, use momentum. If you get stuck, don't mash the pedal and rely on TC... go little back, then forward again to get some momentum. Would probably been able to drive there if you did that trick. Tip 7: don't put the extendercord and charge cable buried in snow, hang the cord end/connection on something so it's not buried in water(water+electricity is bad!). The charge cable box should probably also be above snow and you can use a plastic bag to cover it. Again, thanks for the snow video and please consider my tips :)

11:38 when you said you preheated the car for 30min...and show a generic screenshot of the app? because how is it still 2F in the car when you preheated for 30min? I find turning on climate + defrosters = the car pouring ungodly amounts of electricity into getting the car hot and for the past week(s) with this cold coming in, that I just need 5min of turning on climate + defrosters and I once I reach my 3, I can easily hop in, hit the window wiper to clear w/e, and drive off...while others are scraping off frost with their ICE on. It's really not the cold we fear, but that everything in the car uses electricity to run, so range will get a bite in winter if you like your cabin to be nice and warm when you drive around and the heat pump doesn't really do much when it's that cold.
@mmanda515
@mmanda515 4 жыл бұрын
Apparently, he took the screenshot, when he turned the pre-heat ON..... not after the 30min. As can clearly be seen on the screenshot itself, says to set at 60 degrees, that it's currently 2 degrees inside & then, at the bottom, click here.... Guessing he prob set, took image & then clicked to turn ON & start pre-heat for 30 min. Stay safe & be well.

I feel sorry for the poor Tesla vehicle going through that rough raw cold weather and sitting outside all the time. But it seems to still operate ok once the doors are not frozen. Glad Illinois does not get down to that kind of weather very often. Usually raw temps are 0 to 20F degrees. Our wind chills do approach those minus temps from time to time. When it snows here usually in the 20 to 30F degrees range. My vehicles are in a warmer home garage at night. Wow, you do have a very long Frontage road to get back into your place. Thanks for your winter videos with the Tesla. Take care.

He got the issues because he didnt take care of the car properly.. when it has snowed like 30 cm the normal human would clear the car from snow to not get any issues like he had... I also get issues with my car if i dont do it... the snow then thaws and water getting frozen again all over makeing it hard to open doors and windows and such... so... if you live in a snow climate... here is a list to not get into the problems he have.. When going out to the car... 1. start pre-heating 2. use a "car snow brush" to clear the car from snow.. 3. remove any ice that has been built up and is now loose due to the pre heating.. 4. when getting into the car.. remove any snow from your cloths and tap your shoes together to remove any snow... if you get too much snow into the car like this guy in the video you will have problems with the car fogging up and doors will freeze shut more easily... and... use proper tires for the climate, for your safety and also all other road users...

No electrically heated windscreen in a Tesla? No heated steering wheel? Thats poor from an alleged 'premium' vehicle. Or were these options and not specified?
@JoeMcFarlanesgoogle
@JoeMcFarlanesgoogle 4 жыл бұрын
Front windshield & side mirrors are all heated. Model X has a heated steering wheel, but I don't think the Y does. In theory if you pre-heated the car for 20-30 minutes prior to getting in, steering wheel shouldn't be too bad but you're right that for $60k a heated steering wheel would be nice.

The key here is to preheat vehicle before getting into the car when dealing with those kinds of extreme temps and sub zero conditions. That's what this feature is there for. It needs to be done.

@@JoeMcFarlanesgoogle Thanks joe, but I cannot find any reference to an electrically heated windscreen online. I don't mean electrically heated air being blown onto the windscreen, I mean heating elements buried in the windscreen glass. As there seemed to be a problem with windscreen fogging in this video, I was wondering if Model Y had such a feature and the driver had not used it? The one on my Skoda Karoq clears fogging in seconds and melts outside ice in a minute or so.

@@smr32061 I agree pre-heating is absolutely necessary at such extremes. It would be in any car, whatever the fuel. Just wondering if the driver hadn't activated the electric windscreen or there is not one on the Model Y (see above).
