a lot is wrong here. even the simplest things. for this kind of weather, there must be a broom in the car. sit on the edge of the car seat. they shake the snow off their boots by lightly tapping each other, sitting sideways in the driver's seat, put their feet on the threshold of the door, sweep away the remaining snow with a broom. then fully turn around and place your feet on the mat in the car.

I've stalled out the wiper motor on my 30 year old rig properly 100's of times when pushing through snow covered branches, yet it has never broken. I'm not saying it could never happen, but not surprisingly after a hundred or so years of designing powered windshield wipers, they are reasonably robust -- especially when it comes to a situation like this that would probably bring in thousands of cars a year for warranty work if the design couldn't handle it.

I'm kind of glad Dave did this video, and showed all the wrong things one should do with driving a car in heavy snow, such as not bundling up, not brushing the snow off the car with a snow brush, and using summer performance tires in really cold weather. Hopefully people see this and don't make the same mistakes in their cars, especially the wrong tires one.

Wow! Everything NOT to do all in 1 clip. No coat, no gloves, a broom. Doesn't clear the ice off the window so that weather stripping on the door will get shredded Doesn't clear the snow off the windshield. Doesn't free the wipers to make sure they are not iced in. Doesn't clear the ice off the windshield so the wiper blades will get shredded. Doesn't have snow tires And, expects miracles.
@andrewsnow7386
@andrewsnow7386 4 жыл бұрын
I don't think he was expecting miracles at all. He was just testing it to see what it would do. As for your other items: - I've never hesitated to roll the windows down on my 30 year old rig to clear ice from them and, I just checked, the weather stripping is not shredded. - The windshield wipers are designed to clear the front window. One might as well see if they will do the job before doing it manually. - I never had a wiper blade shred on windshield ice. I often drive in conditions where snow is freezing into ice on the windshield. Even with regular stops to scrape the window, the wipers inevitably drag across a lot of ice between cleanings. Yet, they hold up just fine. He knows he doesn't have snow tires, and it doesn't appear he had any intention of driving on public roads. Why do you object to him having a little fun on his own property?

@@DrizzyDrake612 I live in Sweden. I know what snow is. And ice and shit. And it takes like two minutes to brush off the snow. If i am in a hurry i could probably do it in one minute. Open the door, get the brush, use the arm to brush off as much as possible in a few sweeps, then use the brush to take the rest. But normally, i use a couple of minutes to brush it really good to prevent more snow from freezing on the car. Our winters are... a bit struggling sometimes since it can be above 0 degree C and rain, and then temperature goes down and the rain becomes freezing rain that makes an armor on the car, and then it goes over to snow and then it can be -10 degree. First a fluffy snow layer, followed by a harsh icy snow layer followed by an icy layer. Or, a lot of snow and below 0 and then it goes above 0 and snow starts to melt and then it goes down again and you have a hard snow layer followed by a snowicyslushy armor of like one cm or more covering the entire car. Those days are... wonderful.... But, since i have a car built in Sweden and designed for Sweden, i just... open the door and get in to get my brush and ice scraper (man do that thick layer stick to the windows, even if i have preheated the car for a while especially if it is like -10 degree or colder!) Have you experienced snow? And more than just some white tiny layer on the ground.

Dave, you always travel to Wyoming. You must know that Wyoming gets a lot of snow. For this kind of weather you need snow tires and a snow brush. You also need snow boots and winter coat. Even a small shovel might help to dig you out. You have to be prepared for these kind of conditons. Still,.interesting to.see how the MODEL Y performed in Winter conditions. I've been told when it gets that cold, best to preheat the car ahead of time. Thanks for sharing.

Precisely. When the wheels get stuck a simple and slight shovel in front of the front or better each tire will relieve the forward snow dam. Clearing the ice above the windshield wipers … possibly a solid decision. Scraping the windows on the bottom & top edge before trying to make the motors over work. I mean really any practical effort would be helpful. I’m a bit spoiled though I lived in steamboat for over a decade and we saw deep days. 12-20” a session, and -40 every winter from approximately Jan 5 to feb 1 for only two weeks max in that time. Totally harsh but I guided snowmobile tours and I tell you trying to start sleds at that temp was fun, but like with everything there is a way. Pull the cord slow many times before really trying the start. And with vehicles you need to slow down and look at what’s functioning. Stop sitting there and watching things fail. It’s more like see what may ‘ will be making it not work and clearing the issue before it’s a problem. Agh that’s just me. F*ck I love snow. Deep / thick / fluffy ass POW POW! MISS THAT SHIT! oh and can’t wait to sled this season, brrrrapppppppppp

Hey dave! Appreciate the video, always nice to see beautiful snowy conditions... can't wait for the snow here in Sweden. I notice as many others did many "beginner mistakes"! Tip 1: preheat the car for about 60mins, don't use maximum heat since windshield might crack with that much snow on top and if you have a stone chip or small crack allready. Tip 2, try to charge all night so battery keeps warm, yours was cold since charging was already complete Tip 3: don't use windshield wipers or windows before clearing snow and ice... can break. For the Windows you can use an old credit card to slide between the rubber and window to clear any ice-buildup. Wipers you can brush of the snow and manually slap(with caution) against the windshield to clear some ice. Tip 4: it's your car but please just slap the boots together to release snow rather then kicking your beautiful car... Tip5: don't use performance tires in the cold, they suck on snow and ice and they get badly damaged from the cold since that type of rubber is not made for those temps. Tip 6: when driving in snow, use momentum. If you get stuck, don't mash the pedal and rely on TC... go little back, then forward again to get some momentum. Would probably been able to drive there if you did that trick. Tip 7: don't put the extendercord and charge cable buried in snow, hang the cord end/connection on something so it's not buried in water(water+electricity is bad!). The charge cable box should probably also be above snow and you can use a plastic bag to cover it. Again, thanks for the snow video and please consider my tips :)

Credit card the bottom edge. It seals on the bottom part. Every window every time. I mean I could be wrong it being a tesla that I don’t own yet, but I lived in steamboat for 16 years and a few times have been without the scraper and had to go to the cc to get the job done. Diligently take it to the corner of the rubber to the glass and even slip it in between the glass and the rubber. You just have to break the seal on the rim. Thanks for the post. This vehicle will always be different from any other ice vehicle so it’s great to have you sharing the experience.

Well, looking on the positive side, it suggests that if you give it around an hour on AC, brush all the snow off, clear the drivers window where it meets the seal, free the wipers, (same with the charge port), and do some blood warming shovel work, the car would be out. The beauty of electric. There's nothing like trying things out, and it's testimony to the car's robustness. Interesting video.

I had Pirelli P-Zero summer performance tires on my SLK55 Mercedes. On a cold Ohio morning it was easy to spin both rear tires on dry asphalt pavement with light throttle. On snow at 10 degrees "Fahgeddaboudit". Four Michelin Pilot Sport 4s All-weather tires got installed on it last week. With little more than 4 inches of ground clearance, it won't be going out in snow anyway.

I don’t want to pile on, but this is IMPORTANT. It appears to me that the extension cord used to plug in Dave’s MY was 14 gauge. Based on the amount of current the Tesla is pulling through that cord to use the Mobile Charger, I am concerned that you would burn out either your Mobile Charger and/or your Tesla. I would advise to never use anything thinner than a 12 gauge extension cord, and that only if you are less than 50 feet, maximum. These vehicles are too pricey to be using a cheap extension cord. Also, the high performance summer tires would likely get stuck in far less snow than Dave is demonstrating here. They simply are not made for snow use. Thanks for showing us some extreme weather conditions Dave. Take good care of that Model Y. Mine arrives this Saturday here in Minnesota. All the best.

@@Xanthopteryx Use a cord with the same gage wire as the charger plug type, you'll be fine. For level 1 (15 & 20A), a 12ga cord is fine up to 100ft. Just make sure the cord and plugs are in good condition, and out of the elements. Always a good idea to let it charge for ~30 minutes and check both plug temperatures. If they are warm to the touch, discontinue use. You can't monitor a 24+hr charge 100% of the time. He def should have set the plug and EVSE in a box or up on the tire or something, not on the ground. And throwing the warmed plug in the snow where it will melt the snow and get water in there was a bad idea.

I've had to do that many times to get my door to open or windows to roll down. As long as you're hitting it when the window is all the way up, you'll never be able to break it. Sometimes you just don't have the time to let it warm up for 20 minutes first.

Well, the snow is too deep for most cars anyway. I didn’t see an attempt to rock they car by (carefully) shifting between drive and reverse with a certain rhythm. Not saying the car could be taken out for a drive in those conditions but it might have been able to drive forward in its own tracks. Question: will the snow partially melt under the car and later freeze to the battery cover when it cools down?
