Part 2: Creating Collage Materials

Here are some great ways to create your own collage papers to use in acrylic paintings. This is the second video in a 3-part series about collaging. The first is Using Collage in Acrylic Painting, and the final is Gluing and Incorporating Collage Materials.

Materials
Rice paper: there are many kinds of rice paper available at art stores and online
Deli paper: the kind I use is Dixie All Purpose Food Wrap. It’s available online for about $16 plus tax and shipping.

James and I are currently working on the first of three videos that will do this. We’re starting with Starting, then we’ll do Middle, and then we’ll finish with Finishing. I will definitely do some collaging in these videos. 🌞

Dixie has an alternative to wax paper deli papers now, its sized with starch and its fully compostable papers which might work. but I was wondering about Butcher paper? you can get that in rolls and in sheet

Butcher paper would work but it’s much heavier than the deli paper I use which is like a heavy tissue paper. When I glue deli paper (with matte medium), the paper itself mostly disappears.

Hi Jacqui, thank you for sharing your creativity. I found the wax free deli paper from Dixie but it only comes on a big bulk and it's expensive. Do you think I can find other paper materials that are similar to the deli paper? Thanks in advance!

I can’t seem to find unwaxed deli paper for under $100. There is Kraft paper, but it’s brown and didn’t know if that would work. Can you send a link to the place where you get your paper? Thanks so much!

Hi Laurel, we’re putting together a supply list that I’ll add to this video description soon. Just FYI, I haven’t been able to find individual boxes of the deli paper. It seems to only be available in cartons of 10 boxes these days. I don’t know why.

I thought I’d replied to this, but now I don’t see the reply. The main thing with collage elements is to use things that are archival and won’t fade. For a photograph that means knowing what kind of ink was used to print it. It’s also better not to use photos with a glossy surface, though that can be OK. You might want to try different things and see what works best.

I can’t find the Dixie All Purpose Food wrap online for under 100.00. I can find dry waxed deli paper but not sure if that’s the same as untaxed deli paper. Hope you can help me find the right kind of deli paper.

Hi Becky I was wondering if I can draw something in a big normal drawing paper and stick It on my canvas ? Would it Pell off

This can be done, but it’s not easy to adhere it without having areas that don’t stick down well. If you try this, I recommend that you use a cradled panel rather than a canvas. A friend of mine, who is a framer, recommends using Yes Paste rather than gel medium for the adhesive though many people use gel medium. Have a look online for information on how to do this. I think there is probably a lot of good information. It is a challenging thing to do and you may not want to bother. Have you painted on wooden panel? You might want to try gessoing a panel with white or tinted gesso, let it dry, then add a layer of clear gesso to give it some tooth (a bit of texture), then draw onto that. There are also other mediums, made by Golden and others, that create a good surface for drawing on.

I have gotten it online, but it’s getting harder to find. I’m going to look into using white tissue paper, though this isn’t quite as heavy so it tears more easily.

Is dry wax deli paper OK?

No, it’s best not to use anything with wax or oil with acrylic paint because the paint won’t adhere to the wax or oil so any future layers may peel off.
