Whittle ran his engine a month before Ohain. This is according to both Whittle and Ohain. After Whittle ran his engine everybody who saw and heard it suddenly became extremely interested..Maybe they should have given a bit more support before instead of leaving him to make it by himself in a garden shed.😸 Ohain ran his first engine on hydrogen and it was a dead end design. The Junkers and BMW engines were miles ahead technically.

I was looking up numbers and wondered about the P&W JT8D, and that on its own had nearly 15000 built. The JT8D is the civilian development of the J52 which I can't find numbers for..So it might be cheating a bit but I'd bet it ran the J47 close if the 8D was included.

No, the artifacts are stored in a non public area, but still used for educational shoots.
