A layer of Mod Podge (whether it’s matte or gloss) prevents the color of clay from changing IF you’re adding a water sealant on it. But if you’re gonna use the Mod Podge as it is, it adds a bit of shimmer on the clay (even the matte one). Honestly I want the clay to be as raw as it can, but adding a finish puts extra protection on the clay.

Does the terracotta air dry clay work in the same way as traditional terracotta plant pots? The reason a lot of gardeners and houseplant lovers use terracotta pots is it absorbs water so it keeps the soil moist for much longer, which is great for the plant. If you seal inside, I presume that’d prevent it from holding any moisture? That’s the main pro of terracotta pots. Unless the air dry version isn’t meant to work in the same way?
@enondebelen
@enondebelen Жыл бұрын
The term “terracotta” in this video pertains to the color of the airdry clay used. Jovi airdry clay has three color variations - white, gray, and terracotta. That’s what I am using in this video. It doesn’t work the same as the traditional terracotta pots because if it’s left in contact with moisture, it will absorb the moisture and will eventually break. Airdry clay doesn’t need firing unlike earthenware so it’s more fragile and more water-absorbent, that’s why it needs to be sealed with a sealant to make it more durable and water-resistant.

@enondebelen

Yes you can put soil and plants in these. The waterproof sealant is the layer that separates the clay from the soil and water. If you noticed in the part 1, I showed a similar pot a made a year ago. The pot and sealant are still intact. Though I recommend low maintenance plants with these the don’t require a lot of watering like cactus or succulents.

If you’re going to use acrylic paint, you may go straight to waterproofing. It won’t affect the color of the paint. But if you’re going to use other colorants such as watercolor or soft pastel (those are what I’ve tried so far aside from acrylics), you must use a spray-type kind of sealant because the colors get reactivated once it gets in touch with something wet, so you don’t want to use a brush with that. But paint -> Mod Podge -> waterproof sealant layers won’t hurt.
