This is Part 2 of maybe 3 or 4 where I replace the timing chain on a MINI One 1st Gen. This was on the R50 model but mostly applies to the R53 as well. Though the R50 has no supercharger.

Excellent video What if you leave the old crankshaft sprocket and just replace the timing chain and guides.

I guess it wouldn’t be ideal as the two cogs will have worn with the chain so you might increase the wear on the new chain as its running on cogs out of tolerance so may not last as long. I guess if your chain is about to snap it might be better than doing nothing but it’s better if you can change all the items.

How much would this cost if paying a garage to do it? No idea if mine needs doing (engine sounds fine) but have been told by numerous people that because of the cars age and mileage, it does need doing.

How many kilometres did the old chain have?

It was about 150,000 miles or 240,000 Km, assuming it hadn't been changed in the past.

@@CoatsandGaiters Thanks, I think it's the original. Bmw don't recommend anything it seems. My 2001 r50 has 165000km and has never been changed. Except for a few seconds at start up I can't hear the chain. Excellent tuto, thank you very much.

@@Keller68190 Thank you for the comment. This is a car that came to me with the slapping chain sound but to be honest I'm wondering if it was just the tensioner as I cannot see any damage anywhere.
