If you click "SHOW MORE" in the description above your be able to see Links to the Tools 🔧🔨🔧 I use. Also Clickable Chapters📋 📙 throughout the video and other Links 🎬 that may be of interest. I've had a few viewers request where they can buy the tools they see in some of my videos but it's not very clear that the "SHOW MORE" tab has a lot of information in that may be of interest. Admittedly the amazon links are associated with me and I would earn a small commission which helps towards keeping the channel funded.

Does the aligning of the darker timing chain links with the marks on the crankshaft and camshaft ensure that the valves are properly timed to their associated pistons?

Just completed this job today but I removed way less parts. You can easily remove the timing cover by just slightly raising the engine with a jack-comes right out with a little rotation. My chain with only 2000k miles exploded into the oil pan im glad these are non-interference engines. Great videos btw.

Great information. I'm going to give it a go. Maybe one should measure the temp of the sprocket with an infrared meter? I read that one also should fill the oilpump with some oil?
@CoatsandGaiters3 жыл бұрын
Thank you for the comment. Infrared can sometimes misread on shiny surfaces. I'd leave it in for an hour personally. You do need to prime the oil pump before putting the cover on, though as you do it some oil seemed to splash out. I primed and also turned by hand but it seemed to need the starter to really get things moving. Hope the videos help you.

Awesome series of 4 episodes for changing the timing chain. I used the locking tool but as I took it of to change the chain and sprocket the timing jumped. I am shocked and afraid to finish the job and destroy the engine on start. How can I get it right? I think the camsprocket goes on just one way otherwise the lockingtool dont fit...am I right? I just turned it clockwise 350 degrees (ish) to get the sprocket and lockingtool back on. The chain then goes on one way because you want the colored parts of the chain to line up with the marks. Unfortunately this works at every 360 degree spin of the crank...So when is it perfect? Haynes says the pistons need all 4 in the same spot, about 3-4 cm from the top of the cilinderhead, servicemode. Is there a golden tip to get this right? I dont want to destroy the engine on startup. Greetings from the Netherlands, Martin.

The cam will spring round under the pressure of the valve springs so that normal. As long as you have all the links correctly aligned, the chain tensioned and then remove the locking tool all should be ok. It's always best to rotate the engine by hand first to ensure the valves don't hit the pistons anyway. Socket and long bar on the crank. Rotate clockwise.

When and why engine came so difficult to work on? Even for mass produced cars.

I know, back in the 60’s and 70’s you could reach every item just by opening the bonnet/hood. It’s major surgery now even for an oil change.

Hello - I was having problem on fitting the top sprocket. I tried turning the camshaft but it rotated 360. I was able to put the locking tool again - would rotating the camshaft create an issue? I havent installed the chain yet. Hope you can advise. Thanks
@CoatsandGaiters2 жыл бұрын
It can be tricky as the springs in the valves can flip it over. The main thing is that the timing marks on the chain, camshaft and crank all line up correctly. Perhaps get a friend to hold the cam with a something while you get the tool in place.

No !!! You need to use a puller as it’s a friction fit.

Would love your advice for a serious impasse I'm having. Trying to put the chain on the sprockets but the nub in the top sprocket is slightly off and can't get the chain in position with the sprocket on the upper crank shaft. (I compared old and new components, everything seemed fine) so I tried putting the sprocket on first and matching the chain to it, which I was able to do, but the chain is so tight on one side (yes all notches and marks lined up with chain) that it thunked forward a notch. It's RIGHT on the edge of it's next 'resting' position. So i rolled it back with channel grips and I can't get the engine to stay where the chain wants it to be. have spent a few days trying things and I'm about at the point of saying to hell with it and putting the older, slightly stretched chain back on...

@@ericbmusic Have you compared the old chain to the new one to ensure the same number of links and that the coloured links match.
@CoatsandGaiters3 жыл бұрын
@@ericbmusic one side of the chain might be under tension as the springs in the valves will be trying to force the came round to a point of rest. You may need to get someone to hold the cam and just tweak it back or forth with a large spanner or mole grips. I think the right hand side of the chain was under tension while the left was slack. I used the cam locking tool to hold things once it was in the right position.

@@Jolly-Sid69 I bought the car and was under the impression the rattle was from the timing chain and hence I changed it but I also found I still had a rattle once the car was finished which I'm now working on now and it was the clutch release bearing sleeve tube had snapped off.
