When I was 14, my best friend called me from his girlfriend's house and goes, "check this out!" Over the phone I hear the beginning riff of "Mutha Don't Wanna go to School." I almost had an anxiety attack -- I'm like, "Where are you? I'm coming over right now!!" About a year later, that same friend went to go see Extreme when they toured with Alice In Chains. I couldn't afford to go, but he got one of Nuno's picks and gave it to me. I played with that pick until it was down to a nub. What I'm trying to say is, I'm 45 now, and Nuno's playing still fires me up like no other player can. I'm so thankful he's still around. Awesome interview!

Similar story. But I was 10 in 1990 and I don't remember which track it was but my Aunty was playing Pornograffitti. I made that CD my own, and would sit with cans on weekend after weekend listening, studying in full. Nuno Bettencourt is my Edward Van Halen and I'm one of the lucky ones to have met him after a show and just chat life. Talking guitar never entered my mind, similar to what he says in this interview.

I've watched almost every Nuno interview you can possibly find online, and this one stands out. He seems really comfortable and relaxed, chatty and opening up. Pretty foul mouthed too which is a sign he's at ease😁I like how he speaks his mind and he's not afraid of having an opinion of other musicians instead of the usual diplomatic answers you often hear 😎

Nuno would argue this but - like him - I cut my teeth on VH and Queen. He's just 1 1/2 yrs. older than me. So when I say that I remember the day I heard Nuno it was as much an epiphany as when I first heard Eddie!! I was excited and depressed all at once because he did what I was hellbent on doing - he took skill and swag and funk and swing and made that "soup" that haunted my guitar-playing journey. I was floored! But hearing him talk with his East Coast pragmatic sports fan charismata grips me like a vice because he sounds like myself and all my neighborhood friends. We talked guitar like we talked baseball. Rod Carew, Pete Rose, Hank Aaron, Reggie Jackson… they're our heroes and we played in their shadows and would've been awestruck if we found ourselves talking baseball with these guys. To me, Nuno and Extreme are to me like Queen was to them and yet we're also just giddy baseball fans obsessed with stats & equipment and historic moments at bat. Btw Extreme is sinfully ignored and under appreciated. Not a "hair band" at all, they were perhaps the last of the classic rock bands with a vision and sound identity that was unassailable by critics and record labels ✌🏼😎👍🏼
@vitob58982 жыл бұрын
I feel much the same... im 52. Grew up loving EVH and Queen. But I will always remember the first time I heard Nuno. And for the rest of my guitar playing life he's became my biggest guitar playing influence. And BTW... its a sin that people don't dabble (radio stations included) more into the extreme library because there's a lot of gold in there. 3 Sides is to me is like a Zeppelin album. There's so much in there musically it makes every listen different everytime.

Wow - what a great interview... he's so right about achieving your own tone. He's such a down to earth guy - so cool to listen to him. He's so real and authentic and it is so refreshing... What he says about people's chemistry together as band members is so true - every bit of it. I'm originally from New England and I used to see Extreme during the early 1980's at The Channel and Bunratty's (both in Boston) and they were incredible then... I love what he said about being able to tour when the album is released - isn't that the whole idea? Cool what he says about our generation of guitarists from the "pentatonic" Era - you have to be from then to understand but it was cool as hell... and it was a great time for guitarists... thank you for a great, great posting...

New Extreme album? Rad!! I just miss Nuno's experimental solo material, stuff he did with Mourning Widows and Population 1 still sound fresh today. Although I understand why he wouldn't be comfortable playing these songs, it must have been a really dark period for him and he must have PTSD-like flashbacks when dealing with material from that era. Understandable. At least he was able to turn all that pain and darkness into something productive and that sounds beautiful as these albums. I grew up with these albums, they helped shape me. Thanks dude

Steve Morse is an amazing guitarist in my favourite band, but I can safely say that Nuno Bettencourt is my favourite guitarist, because it seems to my ears that he does more than anyone else, more cleanly and yet somehow the music and feel comes through despite the gobsmacking technique. Those first 2 Extreme albums were the equivalent (I would imagine as I'm too young) to when people who love Van Halen first heard Eddie Van Halen. Id been into Rock for a few years and loved (still do) all the big hitters like Bon Jovi, GNR, Aerosmith, Skid Row, Crue, Poison etc but when Nuno turned up......wow. Me and my mates jaws dropped. Some of that guitar work in Pornograffiti is one of shear genius. I picked up the guitar in lockdown last year and I cannot comprehend how someone can make the guitar sound like Nuno can. Legend. Also, Kylie, great interview by allowing the guest to speak. Is there anything worse than when an interviewer asks a question and then either talks over the answer or answers it for the person. Thanks.

What a great interview. Eddie was definitely royalty and on a level of mythical god for guitarists. Yet you hear stories like this and it blows your mind. He was EVH but he seems also like a cool down to earth guy who could show up at your summer bbq, crack a beer and just chill out. If you haven’t seen the video on KZbin when Eddie went to spend time with Jason Becker, check that out. Guy was a beautiful soul through and through.

Thank s for that Troy... I just checked out the video with Eddie and Becker and it blew my mind... what a guy! Its' a bit like when he went to the funeral for Dimebag, he'd only met him a few weeks before and then he gave him his guitar to be buried with. Amazing man!
