In part of one my chat with Extreme guitarist, Nuno Bettencourt, we chat about how every guitarist should start on drums, the importance of understanding the pieces in your band to understand the matrix of the song, working with Steven Tyler and more.

Nuno just articulated the problems in our society better than anyone I have listened to to-date. Brilliant. Gone is the kind of debate where people truly listened and argued passionately but shook hands when it was over and walked away friends, perhaps closer than before they debated. Bravo Nuno for once again having the courage to speak your mind. I believe this is what makes his music so good and inspiring. Look beyond the talent: there is something deeper at play. 🤘🏼🎸

@@KylieOlsson It was a brilliant interview. I was fortunate enough to meet Nuno once, on my birthday of all days. When it happened I didn’t know what to say, as he was such a massive influence on me like so many others, that I just thanked him and gave him a hug. He busted my balls, looked around and said “Can we get security over here? Security?” It was brilliant - and you made the right decision to leave it all in. Thank you for this interview. 😉🤘🏼🎸

Nuno has always been and always will be my guitar hero. Loved what he had to say about learning drums before he played guitar. I started playing drums when I was 10, and discovered a love for guitar when I turned 15. To this day, my drumming experience is responsible for every and any iota of timing and attack I put into my guitar playing. Such a class act Nuno is. Now Nuno...can you guys PLEASE push out the next Extreme record?!!

Thats fantastic to hear... and like Nuno said, all his heroes started on drums and I guess it makes sense as it gives you that internal timing.

Nuno is awesome. I'm in my mid 50s, love Extreme, and really understand what he's saying. There used to be a time when people could talk to each other, debate, converse, and learn. That time feels like it's gone, but we need it to come back. We need to start listening to each other again and finding a way to take care of ourselves as people, take care of this planet we live on, and accept that we don't all see things the same way. It's not a bad thing...it's called diversity.

One of my top guitar heroes ... i remember how inspired I was by his facebook post about the state of society. What a courageous and real person expressing a refreshing perspective vs the quick judgement and absolute labeling that is so prevalent in society right now. As Nuno says, its ok to have a blend of opinions vs being in this camp or that camp. Its ok to explore topics and you should be able to do so and talk about them without fear of being labeled without real basis. Painting with a broad brush is a key element in living a misguided life...

I cried when he said this. Someone needed to say it, and I'm so glad it's Nuno. He was pretty opinionated about Bush 43 in a video of an appearance...BUT he offered an opportunity for the person to give their opinion too. He even offered the guy the microphone. Not sure how the topic came up....anyway.... My brother was a strong Conservative Republican. We were raised that way. But we never imposed our views on anyone. My brother used to joke about Nuno and his long hair, etc. Then I'd counter with, "But Mick and Keith, really?" But as time went on, my brother like my shares of Nuno's posts on social media. He was excited when I was planning my trip to see Extreme and meet them. And when I got back from the trip, he loved the fact that Nuno signed the picture of Nuno and Malala that I printed from that very Nobel Prize Ceremony. Nuno had the picture taken and he posted it. He stopped and seemed taken aback when I asked him to sign it. "Wow. Malala", he said. And I also asked if he would sign the picture of him with Desmond Tutu. Two Nobel Prize recipients for Peace. Yes I cried during this. Nuno gets it. During these times when we feel that we have to watch what we say, he is brave enough to say what he feels and believes. And now that I no longer have my brother to talk with about how we can be "cancelled", silenced....dismissed for having a Dad who is a retired police officer and we just want to be proud of our law enforcement.... I feel lost. My brother was my best friend. His wit and sarcasm were welcomed in a casual discussion about the news of the day. He instilled the value of listening to others and respecting their opinions with his daughters. That was until the day after he died. His older daughter changed her FB entirely to BLM and "radical" rhetoric. At 18, I was hoping it was grief and rebellion. But she is one of the many who take the 10% of what someone says and label you as 1000% of it. Nuno is a great role model during these times and his children are fortunate. "We need more feet to walk in one another's shoes"

Wow, that was completely unexpected. I came here because I'm a long term Nuno fan, we listened to Extreme in High School. Besides still playing the guitar, I have kids now and whatnot and worry about their future sometimes in terms of the environment etc. And seeing particularly the U.S. become so extremely polarized and ending up with a president like Trump who has made 'you're either with us or against us' his trademark and who is sanctified partly for being rich is just downright scary and brought america to the brink. So, while 'Money, my personal saviour, in god we trust' still resounds, Nuno's current musings even without a guitar and recording studio seem just as relevant. Thank you both for this.

@@KylieOlsson For me he was second only to EVH, but more of a direct influence, particularly because of his rhythmic playing. But a cultural influence too. As a kid you sing along with each song hundreds of times so all the memes are deeply engrained in your system. And when you're older you listen again and notice yourself humiming 'don't forget to put your tooth under the pillow'... 'Money, my personal saviour, in God we trust.., trying so hard to keep up with the joneses' etc. And you realize, worrying about your mortgage, friends driving ever bigger cars, etc... wow that's quite profound and truthful for a bunch of 24 year olds saying it without compromise.

I always thought Extreme only played slow songs until today. The only time I saw them on MTV was the More than Words video. I’m going to listen to some of their stuff now.

Wondering Nuno's thoughts on "Color Me Blind" today. How does he think it would be viewed? The song has a positive and inclusive message. Would it be misconstrued as "All Lives Matter" (in a derogatory manner)? That would be so shortsighted and dismissive. I'm really sad to think what "Cancel Culture" try to say about this.... "Picture the world, without any color You couldn't tell one face from the other I don't understand, why we fight with our brother? Color me blind just to love one another" This is soooo needed right now! I really wish Nuno was asked about this...and if so he would feel he could answer. Telling by this interview, he probably would offer his thoughts. (A lot of people who are not familiar with Nuno's work Mourning Widows) criticize my username... The first time I heard the lyric with a friend, he said "Oh are you an AK 47 mouth!!" Too many people just see it for a gun name. Smdh)

@@tonymartinez8206 I would just hope that the lyrics would be embraced as unifying, as intended. Not painted in a derogatory manner in today's climate. I don't think there is much room for interpretation here.
