How flat does a butt joint need to be as you float it out? Will it be perfectly flat throughout the joint?Or can I have some spots with a small hump that barely rocks back and forth with a 12inch knife. One of my joints is pretty flat throughout the joint when I check with my 12 inch knife . Then I have some small small spots on the same butt where I have a small hump after I've floating it out. I wasn't sure of the entire joint would ever be perfect or If I can get away with a few bad spots. I'm planning on doing a smooth level 4 finish. I will be using a high build primer and a flat latex paint. I am a DIYer. Thank you in advance for your help.

So, on this butt joint I finished it is not flat. It’s more like the curve of the earth, you can’t see it but it’s there. The object is to have it uniform from one side to the other all smooth without any humps. A hump for example would be where you can see the tape hump in middle of butt joint. Some people try to sand it down and make it flat and end up sanding through to tape. Many people make them flat in middle and leave 2 humps on the midway point between tape and where butt end at drywall. My friends used to call that the McDonald butt joint or the Golden Arches. Those can be sanded out. But back to how it is supposed to be. Most butt joints are not like the one I finished in this video. I just made this one smooth from one side to the other. It just has to be uniform and follow curve of ceiling. Hope that helped!

@@manwithapan So basically a butt joint doesn't have to be completely flat? I've seen some talk about making a wider bump so that it is harder to see as you float it further out. Does the tapeline need to be completely flat after floating or can there be some small imperfections. I've had some places where my tapeline is completely flat and some spots were I can see some light when knife checking. Didn't know how noticeable this would be. I'm finishing a popcorn ceiling that I scrapped. I was planning on doing a smooth finish like a Level 4. After watching some of your videos it looks like all your joints are perfect. I can tell your really good at what you do. Should I have this type of expectation of my self or does the flat box help make your joints flawless. I'm only using had tools. Thank you again for you feedback !

How do get your mud so creamy so it goes on smooth?

I apologize, I missed this comment. I am using ProForm Lite Blue top mud. I add a good bit of water. One of my other videos shows how I mix it.

great advice thank you...I'd like to ask how much is the price of 1 meter square ? or 10,76 sq ft. In France it's between 2 to 4 euros 1 meter.
@manwithapan Жыл бұрын
You’re welcome! Prices vary all over the U.S. Are you referring to what a finisher makes as a sub contractor?
@antoinecrespel2182 Жыл бұрын
@@manwithapan I mean not sub contractor what the client pays. For me I ask 4 euros square meters with the matériel. And some contracter says that I'm to expensive. They says 2,8 is the max I should ask.
@manwithapan Жыл бұрын
@@antoinecrespel2182 it can be anywhere from $1.00 to $1.5 a ft depending on where you are in US.
