This video describes how to go about replacing a traditional pendant light fitting with one that does not require one, such as the more modern spotlights.

Have just replaced two ceiling rose light fittings with more up-to-date flush fitting lights. This video and the other one detailing the existing wiring of the ceiling rose were invaluable. I even purchased some clip wiring blocks which made the job easier. Thank you so much for your help.

Thank you so much for this brilliant video. The husband and I had been struggling to figure out what to do and this had the problem solved within 10 minutes. We were on the brink of calling an electrician out which would have been very costly, but after watching this and a quick trip to screwfix for the connectors we now have lighting upstairs again. Thank you!!

Thanks for this excellent video! This was an ambitious job for me, complicated by no less than 5 mains cables and no leeway in any direction. However, I managed it using this method and 3 x 5 plus 1 x 2 Wagos. You explained the process so clearly and it really gave me confidence.

Very useful. I didn't have a clue what all the cables were, and while I still don't quite understand, the video helped me to wire up a new fitting correctly. It was still very fiddly, but it worked. Thanks!

Useful video thanks. The grey Wagos you used puzzled me, perhaps they were an older type available when the video was made? In 2022, I would imagine you need instead the transparent Wago 221 series to make good connections with lower cross-section UK lighting cable? The current 222 series look confusingly very similar to the ones you used but are for chunkier mains cable and the latest Wagos seem to have orange clips with less travel.

Hi I have 2 browns in one then 3 browns in the middle then 3 blues on my ceiling old light fitting I’m wanting to put a pendent light up which one will be the switch wire ?????

I've never changed a light before but I've managed the first few steps of disconnecting the old light and I've put up the first part of the new wiring. However, the new light fixture I have doesn't have anywhere for the earthing wire to go and I cannot find any advice on what I do with it? Can anyone please help /advise? The old light was a 3 way LED which had a hole for each of the wires (blue, brown, green) but the new one only had screws/holes for brown and blue and there's nothing on the instructions.

hi sorry daft question but would any 3 core wire/ flex do and are the weego things be ok pushed back in the ceiling
@frankhayes11354 жыл бұрын
ALL single insulated wires MUST be contained within an approved accessory; you CAN NOT simply push insulated but unsheathed cables back into a ceiling void or under a floor. I understand the problem but this not an acceptable solution. This problem arises because (as usual) the UK has adopted a wiring practice that is non-standard in most other countries called the 'loop-in' system; aimed of course at saving a little money. It results in far too many wires in the ceiling rose for which many foreign made retrofit lights are not suited nor sized. In other countries the 'loop' is done in the light switch with a single wire running to the light fitting. If the light fitting is a Class-2 fitting made of metal then ABSOLUTELY NO single insulated unsheathed cables must be exposed in the light fitting. If the fitting is Class-1 (earthed) then unsheathed cables may be contained within the light fitting. ALL connections MUST remain accessible for future inspection unless marked as 'Maintenance Free' with a 'MF' stamp and contained with a similarly marked accessory box. I know this is all a palaver but I'm afraid it is what it is. It is also why I never give a price for fitting lights over the phone because more often than not to do the job correctly and safely is sometimes more difficult than expected. Finally, don't forget that because you have disconnected and reassembled all the earth wires, a test has to be done to confirm that earth continuity back to the consumer unit and on to other light fittings remains intact!
@18in803 жыл бұрын
100% correct. This is a common problem and is what differentiates proper electricians who know what they're doing and why it's done from just DIY men and kitchen fitters. All conductors must have mechanical protection right up to the enclosure housing the terminations. A circular BESA box would provide an adequate enclosure in the case of a light fitting with a circular base. Dry line BESA boxes are available to ensure compliance.
@agicorn63793 жыл бұрын
I was going to write this exact comment, bit worrying if this guy is actually an electrician and thinks that what he's done is acceptable. And now there's going to be many people who watch the video and assume it must be correct because it was done by an 'electrician', and go on to fit a light like this in their house.

Hi watched various videos over the last few days about wago connectors and commented on the various videos. My question on each video I watched was can I push the connectors into the gap above my ceiling ? Everyone except yourself says they have to go in the wago junction box. So a little confused. Can u clarify that they can just be pushed into the gap above the ceiling. Thanks

Great video but I have a question. My new light is metal and has an earth pre-attached to a screw on the fitting itself Your video does not demonstrate or explain this important issue - is it because the flex earth was joined in the WAGO with the other earths? Would appreciate an answer. Again, great video.

In my modern new build I don’t seem to have an obviously switch live, no marked or sleeved blue cables…I have 2 cables coming in to each rose and both browns have been attached the same terminal and both blues to another…. Then the pendant light wires on the outsides. Great. I want to swap this for a different fitting and remove the rose… I try using wago but obviously I’m not getting the configuration right…. Tried all blue into a 3 way, all brown in a three way and then all earth in a 3 way …. But no deal… I read somewhere one of these will be the permanent live…. 5 hours and lots of combinations later it’s still not working… what am I doing wrong?
