How to connect up a ceiling rose and pendant and make sure the conductors are neatly dressed. We look at the layout of a ceiling rose and its connections - loop, neutral and switching line and how best to lay them out to minimise crossing over of conductors. At college we often have only 2 twin and CPC (twin and earth) cables at the lighting points during training but often in the real world this would be 3 cables. The connections in the ceiling rose are for the 3 plate method of wiring a lighting point explained.

I cut my switch wire at 45 degrees, saves writing on cables and sometimes they get covered in paint or plaster

Hope you are feeling better soon. Could you do a video on how you would correctly wire live and neutral to the switch and then to the next light in the run. As the US runs line and neutral to the switch, a lot of the smart switches need it to work. There are no neutral switches available but I get the feeling that line and neutral is going to become more common so it would be good to see the correct way to do it. Hope it’s nothing serious and you get well soon.

So helpful-thank you. However the new light I’m putting up only has a terminal with three holes (L,N and earth). How do I get 3 sets of cables in?!?! Where do all the reds go?

Would it be incorrect to put the switched live into the live of the pendant and both neutrals into the neutral side of the pendant and only have the commons on the rose?

Just decided to upgrade the lighting in a bedroom and saw this video in my suggested list. The bedroom has one silly globe fixture right above the window which is a ridiculous place to put a light. I want to have the light in the middle of the room. What would be the best way to move the fixture?

You would need to fit a new ceiling rose and disconnect the wires from the old one and put them into the new one. However this assumes there is enough cable to reach the new position if not you would need to extend the existing cables using a suitable junction box. However this raises the question of whether this requires a minor works certificate as you are extending the circuit perhaps a certified electrician can comment.

Hi, I’m baffled because when trying to install a new strip light in my garage. The existing one came crashing to the ground exposing all the wires. There’s four cables two with red black and earth and two with only red and earth?? What’s that about? Love to hear your thoughts. Thanks

It's neat but you left no slack at all. If this was an existing installation and at a future date someone wanted to replace it, the cable would probably have to be replaced.

I’m an American electrician. No offense but, you British certainly make mountains out of mole hills. Your way is arguably a touch safer but its incredibly inconvenient to run the line ( the supply from the breaker) to a ceiling.
