Removal of the rotten wood in the transom, floor removal, and removing the foam and stringers under the floor. Wood doesn't get much more rotten than this! This is going to be quite a boat rebuild project...
The foam was completely saturated, the wood in the transom was powder, and the stringers had the consistency of topsoil. On the bright side, it makes it easy to strip the old stuff out when it's completely rotten!
Tools required? Reciprocating saw, circulating saw, and a shovel...

Yes me too. I have an old laser LTV performance tunnel-vee boat I'm hopefully picking up in the next month or two and I'll be digging in just like this,!!

Good work. I have an SRV220. Although I don't have the problems you have yet, I will likely at some point have to do the same thing. I am following this as a reference. These are great boats, with a great design and look.

I am going to be meeting to look at a 1977 SRV220 this week. I've looked at it from the outside and the transom sounds solid. I agree that those 80's Sea Rays just have an amazing look that has not been surpassed!

I have a beautiful one that needs to be restrung and has a wet transom. It's not nearly this bad but I can't wait to see the next part of this! Mine is also red.

Thank you for posting this. I think we're fairly local (Ontario) and I'm planning to buy my first project cabin cruiser this winter that needs all new bow and aft decks, side decks, flybridge deck, etc. Basically front to back and this is giving me some confidence and a bit less anxiety :) Good video!

That’s as bad as I’ve ever seen. You’re a better man than me. I would have junked it.

Thanks for the comments... Been a busy summer with too many things that didn't give me enough time to work on the boat! I did get more done though. New transom and stringers are in, cabin floor is in, will post some short video clips and pics in the next few days. Didn't end up shooting very much video of the process as it always seemed far too dusty for video cameras!

Deep penetrating wood epoxy anyone lol ? Maybe not on a case this bad. I just had a few spots in the stringers. Worked great for me. Better than org wood for sure.

This wasn't wood anymore... and the inner glass skin was just flapping loose. It was years beyond any "quick fix".

No mask. Dude your braver (or dumber)than me , all that fiberglass dust your breathing in. Either way love the videos. Good luck

No, I didn't use a mask for this tear apart (although I probably should have) - got carried away with the fun of digging in the dirt! I do use a mask when I'm grinding down the hull and creating the really fine dust, as well as a proper mask for fumes when I'm working with the resin.

This ship must have been in the water or sunk or more likely the drain plug was left in or was clogged and water could not drain out. This wont happen if water drains and everything drys out. Standing water will destroy everything.

It was probably neglected for years - although many Sea Rays of this vintage will have huge amounts of rot under the floorboards. Most people just never realize it as they don't peel up the floor. The stringers weren't properly sealed up in the first place, and once there is any water intrusion into the transom, it's only a matter of time...

@@zero_to_floating8338 well I have 2 73 SRVs. One that was in storage 30 years and is in amazing shape. Were taking it to the keys in September. The other one is a 220 that was given to me . It's bad.. I'd like you to follow me on it as I'm cleaning it up.ill post the link to my first video.

That one looks rough... My engine was clean inside - it had been winterized after the last time it was used, still had antifreeze in the lines. The guy I bought it from had never had it in the water (he was a bit clueless actually). The previous owner had apparently stripped the interior, and then sold it to the guy I got it from. It then sat in his yard a few years before I got it. My guess is that the previous guy saw how bad things were when he got the carpet up and stripped the interior, and then just unloaded it on the old guy... When I got it home, I hooked up a battery and the engine turned over - fuel system was a mess so it didn't start. Any lights still left on the boat still worked.

You should wear a mask working with rotten wood like that. You're breathing spores and who knows what else. I have a '77 SRV 240 flybridge, bought for a project. Plan on rebuilding the transom and changing to a higher horsepower outboard (will free up a lot of interior storage and be quieter - and more reliable). I don't have your kind of rot but I'm expecting a lot of work.

You're probably right about the mask - but I tend to get carried away with just trying to accomplish something and forget (until later). Good luck with the rebuild!
