From a guy that works at a SW transmitter plant-Marti/VOA-the Higher band frequencies used more during the daytime.Low band frequencies at night.The ssite I am at used to broadcast 24 hrs per day.The night boradcasts go off at 0400 UTC and don't come back on until 1000UTC.The broadcasts go to Cuba- Marti.Budget cuts forced the reduction in broadcast hours.250Kw SW transmitters are EXPENSIVE to run!!Not just power-but replaceable transmitter parts such as tubes,vacuum tune capacitors, and modulator modules add up the costs.

yep. am broadcasting includes shortwave, medium wave and long wave. medium wave is what what most people know as "AM radio" so that term got adopted to refer to medium wave stations that we hear best locally. but from an actual technical perspective, AM broadcasting includes all three waves
