Here is my attempt to clean out the rust out of my sv650 gas tank using white vinegar. It’s not perfect but it worked pretty well.

Keep up the good work, a few years ago I did the same to an 07 SV650 that I bought off a friend

I noticed that you kept your fuel level sensor in while cleaning, was it still functioning properly afterwards? Did the cleaning reaction damage the part at all? It will be my first time doing this and I am overthinking! I don't want to have to buy a new sensor $$$. Thanks!

Yea it was still working. It did not damage the sensor but totally up to you if you want to take it off.

Vinegar and salt is the best method, fill the tank all the way for a whole week wash it out with distilled water and baking soda then add gasoline with two stroke oi,l let that dry which will prevent rusting and you got a great functional gas tank

puor the baking soda directly into the vinegar that'll break up everything that's still in there, then wash it out again with the water and vinegar

All that other stuff you did was just wasting your time the vinegar and baking soda mix reaction after the week will take care of everything

thank you, that's good to know. I will try that next time.

@r1sabotage how long should you leave gas and 2 stroke oil in the tank to prevent rust

Hey did you take the fuel pump out before doing this? Is it located in the fuel tank?
@BuiltByRich Жыл бұрын
No, the 2001 sv650 fuel tank does not have a fuel pump. It’s a gravity fed system. You do need to drain the fuel tho.

Did you have to use a tank sealer or was the wd40 enough of a tank sealer?
@BuiltByRich Жыл бұрын
I just used wd40

Do you leave the pump in the tank

This year sv650 did not come with a fuel pump. The fuel is gravity fed.

After you used the WD40 is there anything else you need to do before remounting it adding gas and firing up the bike? Do you need to let the WD40 dry/cure for a certain amount of time or rinse it out before putting gas in it and using it?

Thanks in advance!!

No the wd40 is just there to prevent it from flash rusting. I just left it in. You don’t need a lot just enough to put a layer of protection.

@BuiltByRich I'm kinda lost at this point i did everything you did after the baking soda I dried it with heat gun and so far no rust came back but a little rust left behind but I don't have too much time Ned to put it back together otherwise I would repeat the process . But the wd40 doesn't need to be rinsed out at all ?
