Good build. Yes, you should weld up for penetration on vertical welds. It is easier going down but you aren't getting good strength without the full penetration. Also those little 12v motors have a very short duty cycle so keep testing how hot it is getting until you are familiar with how long you can run it under load. I would also add some cheek plates on your pivot hole in the boom. Enjoyable video with a creative project. Doug

I would add a second tube as bracing above the raising arm to minimise deflection

sorry but down hand welds will result in lack of fusion. root pass with vertical down position creates disruption in the process and may result in partial fusion. vertical up position is preferred, resulting with better fusion. welder sound a little cold also, I hope I don't sound to critical. good video.

, really nice Questions please I am interested in building a crane simular to yours it will be something like a pick up truck crane only I want it to be able to fold up when not in use and the idea to use the angle iron is for the weight of the over all project I want to use angle iron and round tubes the round will be used to pivot only and it's not mention in my mind to lift anything more then a guess of 2_300 lbs will you recommend anything in regards to this project as far as an iron goes Thank you

maybe you should try lubricating your drills with emulsion from water, oil and washing up liquid (90% water, 1-2% oil, +enought washing up stuff, that it mixis into a emulsion)....because your poor drills sound painful !

Someone knows how to use a mig welder, wish I could. The hardest part of engineering I reckon! One guy actually told me it's the easiest... can you believe that?

good welding overall, but for the time and metal costs you put into this, it would have been far cheaper to just buy an Electric RV Tongue Jack (3500-lb capacity) and just modify the end fittings, then buy a portable folding engine hoist and mate the two. Would have cost about $270 total, and you would have been in-and-out of the project in 3-hours with basically, the design you ended up with anyhow.
