In this 3rd and final video, we visit the ghost town of Teebus with its empty houses and empty swimming pools. We also reach the final destination on our trip as we make it to the outlet of the tunnel - below the Teebus Mountain.
It's been a great story to tell and we have seen many interesting places along the way. We hope you have enjoyed it.

We lived in one of the asbestos houses whilst my father was an engineer at the tunnel. The town had a school, a recreation area with tennis courts and a massive pool as can be seen in the video. A number of families were from Italy as the project attracted engineers from abroad.

@@WaywardWilderness Hi Wayne and Lynda. I was rather small, but yes it was a nice community. You may have noticed a section of a hill missing on the way from Teebus to Steynsburg. Stone was extracted there for the project. Interesting for me is that the hill is located on the farm on which my mom grew up. By the way, the town of Steynsburg used to have quite a vibrant community many moons ago... even had a teachers college and a theological seminary.

@danieliebenberg1194 Hi Danie. We recently discovered that Lynda has a family link to the old seminary and quite a strong link to Burgersdorp as well. This only came to light after I accidentally stumbled across some information on the Internet. We never knew this and it's quite coincidental that she now finds herself back in this part of the world.

Super footage Wayne, My Great and Grandfathers had farms on either side of the R390 between Midshaft and Steynsburg. Many of the Hofmeyr farmers in the district worked on this project as there was severe drought and these farmers had to supplement their income. One of the farmers lost a foot via a runaway cocopan. My GGrandfathers farm (Springvale) was on the west side of the R390 and my Grandfathers farm (Marsden Heights) was on the east side of the R390. This farm was sold to Tommy Logan (farm renamed to Edrum) who was a descendent of James Logan (a Scottish railway entrepreneur) who purchased the farm Matjiesfontein and established the little town of the same name. I traveled the R390 last July when visiting the farm folk in the Schoembee/Cradock districts and will be back again next month along with my trusty mountain bike to cycle the area. Most of the English farm folk in the area between Steynsburg/Hofmeyr/Cradock and Middleburg are either family or folk our family has know for many generations and many are 1820 Settler descendents (myself included). I am a regular visitor to the area and it's certainly a unique part of the Northern Karoo. Love it.

Hi Robin. That is fantastic!! Thanks for sharing. I know where Edrum Farm is. It went up for auction a while back if I'm not mistaken? We know a few (not many) farmers in the area, but my good friend who has been in this area all his life knows most of the people. Please let us know when you are in the area. Would be great to meet you. All the best. Wayne and Lynda.

@@WaywardWilderness I'm guessing from your Mountain Zebra footage you are located near Steynsburg ? I see you travelled the R390 via Hofmeyr (The Farmhouse owned by Lynette Lord) and the onto Cradock. If you exit Hofmer on the R401 toward Conway, you get the the now abandoned siding Teviot. The turn off to the left, opposite the salt pan was the road to my Grand fathers farms (after selling Marsden Heights to Tommy Logan) he farmed Fonteintjie and Aandenk (which he unofficially renamed to Melrose). I'm travelling to Schoembee (Warterleigh Farm - Robert Lord) and then to Mt Melsetter - arrive 3rd April.

Why was the town dismantled?
@WaywardWilderness
@WaywardWilderness 4 ай бұрын
@@Deontjie I can only speculate - Midshaft is now on privately owned farm land and like the Bulhoek Pass road, ownership must have been handed back to the land owner. As there is no longer a need for the buildings, they have gradually been broken down. Teebus still belongs to the state (Department of Water and Sanitation) as far as I know. There is still some activity around the site of the old town, but not much. Again, I would imagine that because there is no longer any use for many of the structures, they have gradually been destroyed.

Hi there. Yes, it was certainly excellent foresight when you consider that the Dam and tunnel were at the same time. It must have been an amazing experience to see. Keep well. Best regards, Wayne and Lynda.

Why doesn't the government put homeless people in there and teach them to grow their own vegetables and give them chicken for eggs and meat?

I wonder how much asbestos is in those houses, I’ve been in the first World too long!
@WaywardWilderness

Hi Richard. I was wondering if that might not be one of the reasons why the houses were discarded after completion of the tunnel? But, you are right, some of the older houses in Oviston still look like the original asbestos ones. Keep well. Best regards, Wayne and Lynda.

Hi there. Yes, the old town does have a rather sad feeling about it. But we must remember that these towns were never really intended to last forever. Best regards, Wayne and Lynda.

Was this 9:45 one of those whites only towns?
@WaywardWilderness
@WaywardWilderness 4 ай бұрын
No, as I explained in the videos, these towns were built specifically for the families of the people working on the construction of the tunnel. At no time was meant exclusively for whites only.

Hello Alex. This series of videos is located in the Eastern Cape. The tunnel inlet as at Oviston on the Gariep Dam and the outlet is just outside Steynsburg at Teebus in the Karoo.

Hello Philip. Thanks for your message. I wouldn't classify this as a documentary, I am definitely not on the level of making documentaries. It is more just a telling of a story that I find interesting and wanted to share with others in the hope that they might gain some insight into the subject. Judging by the other comments I have read, I like to think I may have done that. Keep well. Best regards, Wayne and Lynda.
