My climbing roses are about 20 years old and showing signs of age. They are in a bed about 20 metres long trained on posts and wires, and I would like to take them out and replace them with hybrid tea Austin roses. But am I going to find the ground is going to be ‘rose sick’ or is this a myth? Can you plant a rose in the same place previously occupied by another rose?

Im so pleased you mentioned about the advice on graft depth changing. I'd seen a while back that it was now saying to put it below soil level and was thinking i must have got it wrong on my previous plantings! 😄 Which rose is this you've planted? (Sorry, I can't remember if you said in your DA garden tour after the bare root planting course video)
@the_gardenerbenАй бұрын
@@kathydyer4420 please don’t worry too much about the graft point if you have roses above ground if you feel concerned and you wish to mulch over the top of them please take a watch of my winterisation video if you’re living somewhere particularly cold is the first couple of seasons, which really are the difficult ones to get them through once they’re established they can take temperatures down well into the minus figures but young Plants need a little bit of help. I haven’t revealed which variety on planting here just yet as it’s one that will be reviewed in 2025 I’m adding around 22 to 24 roses to the collection this year and this poor will be in and out of the ground four or five times just yet before I’m finished with it

@@the_gardenerbenah, I did wonder about a reveal, and wow, that's a lot more roses to come!! Every year I think I have no more space for more roses, but then manage to find a bit more. I think I've around 20 (all DA) in a not very big garden. 3 more on their way (when they're ready) from DA! I'm in North Lincolnshire.

@the_gardenerben that sounds like a fantastic project. I moved Wolerton old Hall earlier this year (only in since this year) from an arch and am replacing it with Lady of the Lake.

Hi Ben, I have a question about some roses I planted in May that came potted from DA. I put them in a very large plastic pot the size suggested by DA. I’m completely new to all of this so I’m just trying my best. My rose is now completely covered in black spot even though I tried to keep up with removing the infected leaves. The branches are brown.. I feel as though maybe i didn’t put enough drainage holes in the pot? Could this cause bad black spot? Or do you think it sounds as though the roots are rotten? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.. also, could you possibly post a picture of a plastic large pot with adequate drainage holes? Thank you so much Ben ..I’m planning on trying to repot it to try and save it.. ❤
@the_gardenerbenАй бұрын
@@nataliesknowledge7962 thank you for your question. Firstly don’t panic talk me through what you actually did to create drainage in the bottom of the pot My suggestion is always to place your drainage holes around two or 3 inches up the side rather than in the bottom Black spot is very common, especially at this time of year. Roses are now all set to become dormant and shedding their leaves so I wouldn’t worry about the black spot too much. Which variety did you plant ? Is the soil water locked and does it have any smell most importantly?
@nikkonchАй бұрын
It depends where you are in the world, but, as Ben says, if you are in late autumn/early winter the rose may just be suffering the blackspot that many roses get at this time of year as the end of the season approaches and the weather deteriorates. Some rose varieties are much more prone to blackspot than others. even among DA roses. My DA Tranquillity has very bad blackspot at the moment whereas my DA Lady of Shalott is almost free of it, with other DA varieties between the two in degree of disease. Roses generally lose all their leaves over winter, leaving bare branches, and yellowing leaves and blackspot are often seen before the leaves fall. Some roses have green stems, others red or brown, so brown stems may not be significant. If you mean the leaves are brown and crispy that's another matter, but if the leaves are yellow or green that wouldn't worry me much. Anyway, listen to Ben - he's the expert.

Hi Ben, Great video, thank you. I'll soon be planting bare roots into pots would it be ok to use John Innes #3 with Soil Improver/Conditioner? If not what would you suggest using? Many thanks Tina (Dublin, Ireland ☘️)
@the_gardenerbenАй бұрын
@@tinasterry5651 hi Tina if you take a look at one of my other planting videos which was created a couple of years ago about planting in a pot yes Jon innings number three blended with around 25% organic soil conditioner is the perfect mix for potting into a container unless you’re gardening on a balcony or roof terrace where you need to take Waite into consideration in which case you can swap out some of the loam-based compost for some shrub and tree compost just to lighten things up a little

What rose dod you get ? You didn't mention in last few videos including this one. I do have a question : Is there another rose similar to Pilgrim bec i want roses to bloom at the bottom as well . Any suggestions ? Thanks !! 🌹🌹🌹

@@jin8339 I haven’t revealed that just yet because this is going to be one of the roses reviewed in 2025 this poor thing is going to be in and out the ground probably another half a dozen times before it’s actually planted properly. I’ll be doing this on several live events over the coming weeks. If you’re looking for another climbing rose that has the ability to flower from the ground to the top please take a look at my review for James Galway
