We space our hoops 3 feet apart and use 1 5/8 inch galvanized tubing to combat wind and snow load. Do like the ratchet idea for tensioning.

Yeah, the hoop diameter is 1 5/16 O.D. sounds like you all get some pretty good winter weather!

We can get anywhere from 6 inches all winter or 3 feet overnight. The wind on my wind register (anamometer?) has been over 80 mph peak. Winter is not my favorite season. Oh well.
