I retired from th ELectric Company and we built the DFW Airport electrical power system. Most of our transmision power lines were buried DEEP! We used 10' X 10' X 10' cement underground vaults for termination rooms. Some as deep as 75' down from the surface. (some guys were too spooked to go down that 3' manhole to work.) The first thing we had to do before we could enter a vault was 1st pump out the water, then replace all the air inside them. Because they were notorious for filling with fuel vapors off those big airplanes. But, all that to say this. Winter of Summer the temperature inside the vaults, didn't matter if it was 75' or 3' deep, was always 72 degrees. So while I'm down in the vault working in short sleeve shirts, the Grunts topside were either suffering through 110 degree heat wave, or freezing their butts off. I loved it! I still hope to be able to bury a container in my property here in Rural North Central Texas. (Tornado Alley) Some good tips on building the containers. I always thought I'd just build out the inside like a rollcage in a race car to support the walls and roof. But filpping it over does make a lot of sense. I was thinking of building a steel truss on top, tied to interior headers and walls inside the container. Maybe buy 2 containers. One good one and one with walls trashed. Cut the bottom off one the trashed one and weld it to the top of the good one that goes underground for a roof reinforcement. then reinforce the inside walls. Good Video my Man!

From past experiences, you should check where your water table is and stay @3' above it , and always only put container on high ground, and install a gravity fed sump installed and backfilled with gravel before setting up your grade

I know The rain problem. I've been trying to get tw0 20' ers in the ground. The last year it has deluged almost every week. I keep a pump running. When the water is gone there is still a foot of mud. I need a dry month to get in the hole and now we're entering hurricane season. I'm not in the water table yet. Good video informative. I accept wisdom where ever I find it. Knowledge is good. All sources should be considered.

The only problem I have with this design is the entrance. If someone is injured or old and cannot climb, they won't get into or out of the container, and while someone may be able to help them, it is going to be a problem if time is of the essence. Aside from that, really nice job.

Is it possible to bury the container. Then slot another one on top of it above ground. Therefore saving the trouble of covering it with dirt that may cause it to break and then save me from needing to invert it and plus having an easy way to hide the bunker.

When I was young, we put in a concrete septic tank and after we buried it, it rained and floated the tank out of the ground. The second time we did it, we filled it with water so it wouldn't float out again. That is a big problem putting something underground. Looks like you have it worked out.

Being as this is Ohio, it would help to have a sump pump for the container running 24/7, and you don't want it floating like a submarine. I would have a least 18' of gravel at the base, as well as 6" on all sides of gravel, and 6" of gravel on top, this helps to keep water away from the container walls. Another good idea would have been a reinforced concrete slab overhead.

Did you use some kind of sealant on the new underside to protect the metal? It looks like it would be necessary to keep it from rusting out because of the high water table. I don't remember if you mentioned the purpose for your project, but if it's for a SHTF bug-out bunker it seems a bit small, but for a storm shelter it's a good size. Cephas Martin he flipped it over and welded plates on all the spaces and then filed it with water and none leaked out. I would install a lot of drainage, gravel, French drain pipe, and spray the whole exterior in asphalt. But he said he'd do tar and plastic.

Hey brother you don't need a crane ,contact a large mechanical contractor and rent a monorail hoist they use to lift massive HVAC units onto roof curbs so far last the edge of a building no crane can reach ,we put mine in the ground using a monorail hoist that looked much like the hoists used to install crypt casings at graveyards .

Sir, I've enjoyed your work and commentary. Learned a lot. I've one question though. Is there no way you could dig a drainage ditch, install a run-off pipe sloping downhill from the container? I could be wrong; however, I keep seeing what looks like a creek or some other lower elevation not too far from the container's hole. Gravity will work best to keep the water out. Never know if and when power will fail. Sure'd be good to have an energy-need-free method of drainage.

GREAT GREAT GREAT Idea. FLIP IT OVER. Do you think I can use 4x4 and plywood for walls ? I would definitely use 2 inch "C" beams for edges and side walls (is this the size you used?). Can I use on roof rebars and concrete? and I would be pouring in a way that I have a high center so water and strength of a dome shape?

I'm no expert but I have a small bit of advice for you, you might zoom out and point with your hand instead of moving the camera so much. Man it gave me motion sickness lol. Maybe I'm a wimp. I do like the idea one question, do you think if you flipped it and fully welded the bottom could you just reinforce the top and put it in right side up?

I was curious as to why you chose to seal it with steel plate. Was that for making it water proof or strength? I was considering sealing a container and burying it, but adding B decking, rebar, and pouring concrete for strength. The concrete would not only add strength, but prevent the container from shifting or floating. I had never considered inverting the container though.

Was the tar on roof so the plastic wouldnt move as you poured the dirt in or an added water repellent? Why not the sides or the bottom? What about drainage around the container or gravel under it? Question: how to you prevent this from "floating up", the same way plastic septic tanks float up after heavy rains? I did not notice any "anchors" to hold this container down. I know its heavier, but still filled with air.

I noticed your main hatch is at the top to access it, but when you open the escape hatch, where does it lead to? Did you make a tunnel from the escape hatch to the outside through the dirt?

Seems to me like It leads to dirt since it's about 4 ft underground. You would have to open the hatch and borrow through to get above ground. Not the best solution, but better than nothing, I guess.

Hatch is only 1.5 feet below, 30 second dig to get out. But you are right, that may be too long, or too hard if dirt packed. And hard to reach. But is necessary. 30" flex plastic pipe to surface may work.

You didn't cover nothing about drainage and when you remove dirt from the ground you make a pet once you put the dirt back in because it's loose not compact it will still retain water did you or did you not put gravel underneath in a way that the water could drain away from it

Two questions....We want to do three 53 foot containers....how many ribs (walls) would you recommend on that length? And we were wanting to bury ours where there is 6 feet of dirt, is that possible with this design?

I recommend no more than 10 feet and then have a load bearing wall. 1 rib brace horizontally between the walls is sufficient. just make sure that load bearing wall is no more than 10 feet that should be plenty

Only issue I see when you climb down the door opens out instead of in unless it swings didn't see. If this was just a simple storage then it wouldn't be an issue but if it's a bug out shelter that box becomes a coffin since if that egress gets filled with dirt, debris, or is blocked off you can't open the door.

Yes, the escape hatch opens inward but as far as I can tell, you would have to burrow your way out since the escape hatch appears to be about 3-4 feet below the surface. In a time sensitive situation, good luck.
