What fun to look back on this episode through Kami's eyes. Interesting how we recall different aspects of our time filming... but I do remember learning the basic alphabet for sign language and practicing together around the set.

This aired in September 1972, right? I had just begun 7th grade, and this was when I began taking classes to learn American Sign Language at the Easter Seals Society. I had deaf friends that I wanted to be able to talk with, so I don't remember if this episode had any influence on my desire to learn sign language. I would go on, over the next three years, to learn Beginning, Intermediate, and Advanced sign language through evening classes and with much practice. While I don't know if it influenced me that way, it's amazing how much television can influence viewers, in any number of ways. Rather than technical remembrances, what I'd really like to know, if either of you, or both, would like to make a video on this subject, is how being "in the Walton family," and under the influence of the vibes, values and relationships in that context, impacted your childhood development and who you would become over time. Now with age and hindsight, it may be easier for you to see how it altered your interior trajectory, your values, the choices you've made, the person you chose to become. To some, work is just work, and they let it fall away like water off a duck's back, while to others, life experiences have a genuine impact. This is a story I'd like to hear. It had meaning and value to your viewers, and still does, so it's natural to want to know how it has impacted you, not the fame of it, not the paychecks, not the technicalities of acting or the Industry, but the personal experience of growing up in that environment, albeit it was a fictionalized recollection, TV series and job. You both spent 8 years of your lives in that value-setting, so how has it affected you for the long haul? Thanks. 😊

Thank you Kami. I actually was lucky enough to visit the set one time. My next door neighbor was one of the film editors. His name was Dennis Mosher. He was the son of Bill Mosher. The day I went you were filming The Bicycle episode. It was so much fun to see what goes in to filming and so many people working on the set. The filming was outside of Ike Godseys store. John Boy and Jason drive up in in the truck. This guy runs up to the other side of the truck and plugs in a microphone inside the truck. Off camera, of course. I actually saw you, Mary, and Judy by the side of a building. Mary came past me and said Hi. It was great to see all of you. What a great time. I got to sit on the front porch at the house. I remember the Kung Fu sets were there as well, short distance away. It is a day I will never forget... Love watching these videos... Peace!

I have seen elsewhere where Judy Norton comments about being barefoot the first season, and how she was okay with it since she was used to walking around barefoot a lot. Your comment here about not being used to being barefoot and how you describe yourself as a "tender footed city girl" is eloquent. I think it makes sense that having the kids barefoot on a construction site where nails and screws and who knows what all was scattered about was a bad idea - and Judy says that one of you actually got hurt and had to get a tetanus shot (she doesn't remember who). But - I was an early first-run fan - having the kids portray 1930s Appalachian kids accurately - barefoot all the time except for church - sure was charming. Even in the 60s and 70s in Southern California, it was pretty much the same, barefoot all the time except for school and church. But I agree that the risk was too great. Thanks for sharing your memories!

The whole barefoot thing drove me nuts. I was born in 63, we had a pool in our backyard, and a paved driveway and street. We lived in a very woodsy area, so there were MILES of woods behind our house and at the end of our dead-end street. I don't know about rural Appalachia in the 30's, but there was NO way we could walk into the woods areas in bare feet. Too many sticks and such that would hurt our feet. Even running around on the lawn and driveway wasn't so easy. We had a rocky back yard all around the inground pool, and we tip-toed. I'm talking early 70's. I do not remember much before we got our pool in 71 or 72.

If I’m not mistaken the doll was in another episode, John boy teaches the friend how to read, I’m sorry I can’t remember her name she wasn’t a regular. She nursed Erin when she had her tonsils taken out.💞
