Ive never tried it on a gun but on stainless things I've used a scotch brite pad that says "non scratch" its for glass, showers, tubs and what not. I have a 30-30 I've had for 25 years and I still use it every deer season but I've always wanted to refinish it and luckily I have an old pellet gun to practice on.
@onthejline93289 ай бұрын
Yeah I’d definitely practice on something first. I actually have a video using a scotchbrite pad on a Ruger 9mm. You might want to check it out. Thanks for commenting!

I appreciate the info and kind words about my content. Just a disclaimer….my channel took a turn and I don’t do the gun content anymore. I did create a second channel and have one video there you can watch but I haven’t uploaded any more. Maybe one day I’ll get back into the gun content youtube.com/@rustygunz9534?si=ljbLp5dFis3WXOdu

Good to know thank you for the experience. Rusty stuff is hard to find in the Desert ⁉️🦎 need some water just saying. I used a copper wire to take rust off steel. We don't get much rain but we get snow in upper New Mexico. Never seen that 🧐
@onthejline93288 ай бұрын
Yeah pure copper is a must on rust. I accidentally got some copper plated steel scours and scratched the barrel before I realized

I use brass cases all the time. You need to hammer the cartridge mouth flat, so it is like a knife edge. That will give you better results.

I use a copper barrel brushes in different sizes 54 muzzleloader for chambers and then right size for bore on cheap aluminum cleaning rods on electric drill, first lube excessive in bore to clean bore , always coat lube unless you live in a no humidity desert and leave chamber open to let air circulation or chamber rust can happen,I live in high humidity and have so many people who have listened to gun writer's from out west low humidity that you don't lube but here you lube or accept rust ,blue plastic scrubber pads don't scratch but green does and removes bluing

Great info! Thanks for sharing. I’m definitely in a high humidity area but have never thought about leaving the chamber open?? Great tip!

I’ve heard it can go either way but have never used it personally! Thanks for sharing, I may give it a try...what do you use for lubrication?
@paulvalentine4672 жыл бұрын
you should try bronze wool, it will not scratch glass or chrome or stainless.

When running a comparison test. Only change one item. Funny change the liquid and the scrubber. If one method works better. What was the cause? The liquid, the scrubber, or the combination of the two cleaning items?

Nothing personal but it might be good to watch Mark Novak's 'Anvil' videos regarding restoration and refinishing. If you learn his techniques and apply them I believe you can't go wrong.

If u can find a small spaner wrench, it may work on the barrel nut. Have u tried a tooth brush to remove some the rust?
@onthejline93282 жыл бұрын
I haven’t thought of that.....just the brass brush, I haven’t tried just a plain tooth brush

I'm really enjoying these rust removal videos. My question is I have a Damascus double barrel Remington somewhere between 1870/1880. There's not a lot of rust however the pattern of the damascus doesn't really show through like you would expect. Any advice?
@onthejline93282 жыл бұрын
Damascus is something I have never worked with, nor anything that old.....that’s definitely a nice gun though! Always good to hear my videos are enjoyed, and sorry I’m not any help with your situation. I know there has to be some other channels that could probably give you some good advice!

Have you ever tried using a product "Big 45 Frontier Metal Cleaner" ?. It is a coiled up wad of special soft metal, softer than steel wool, and really works great with a nice solvent like Hoppe's 9 or a product I used to use called RB 17. Seems to work better if not just as good as copper, etc. Have used it for many years and has yet to give any bluing any harm. Give it a try and post another video.

I have not tried it...thanks for the suggestion!
@dennisbartoskewitz78472 жыл бұрын
@@onthejline9328 I think you will find it to be very superior. Also, I’ve found using it wet works best when used with a good solvent. The solvent helps dissolve the rust and basically washes the surface while rubbing.👍

Does anyone make copper wool? Or brass wool?
@onthejline93282 жыл бұрын
Yes! Chore Boy is a pure copper one I used in Part 1 and Part 2 and it worked great. In this video I bought a different brand that didn’t specify if it was pure or not and turns out is was just copper coated.
@randolphrussell1751 Жыл бұрын
That Birchwood stuff is not a lubricant. May as well use acetone or brake cleaner. Didn't you read the label? The scrub pad you used was copper coated steel. Again...the label. Surprised you didn't destroy the remaining finish on your gun and consider yourself fortunate that you removed your stock otherwise you would most certainly have destroyed your stock finish. Just a suggestion...try your ideas out BEFORE you film. People are probably more interested in finding out things that work well.
@onthejline9328 Жыл бұрын
OOORRRRRRR.....maybe someone sees this product at the store and sees "Scrubber" on the label and thinks maybe it will get rust off...so they do a quick google search to see if it works and see my video pop up. Then they watch it and it saves them from making a valuable mistake, by seeing someone else's experience. That's kind of the point of the video. I specifically said in the video..."this reminds me of brake cleaner". Thanks for the view!

Human sweat contains moisture, salt, bacteria etc. The oil on your skin makes it stuck to things, hence fingerprint. Stainless means the steel contains enough nickel and chrome etc to make it "stain less" . High carbon stainless is LESS rust resistant than lower carbon stainless variants like 316. Dissimilar metals, brass to aluminum, copper to carbon steels etc when in contact with each other in the presence of moisture, salts and acids actually produce tiny electrical charges on the surfaces of the metals which aids in rust and corrosion. Gunscrubber is or used to be, acetone based and it is used to strip oils, powder residue, grease and such off of metal and does not protect anything. So you remove the rust, then protect the metals. The two best things I have found are EEZOX and Fluid Film. Fluid Film is sticky and thick , so apply a thin coat . I much prefer EEZOX. Look up Mark Novak YT channel for firearm conservation videos.
@onthejline9328 Жыл бұрын
There was a lot of stuff there that i didn't understand but thanks for being constructive instead of critical! I have watched some of Mark Novaks videos both before and after making this one. I have never heard of EEZOX but will look into it! Thanks!
