The title should be An Amateurs Guide to Briar Pipe Making Start to Finish, but it was too long. Keep in mind I am not a professional, but just do this as a hobby. There will be about 4 or 5 parts to this build series and I should have all uploaded in the next few days. Instead of trying to cut the process down and make quick videos I shot video of every part of the pipe making process.
I've had a lot of people ask me different questions about different parts of the pipe making process so I decided to do a start to finish video. Keep in mind that I am NOT a professional and am using pretty cheap tools. My only intention is to help those that want to give pipe making a try as a hobby and not how to make a professional pipe.

Another thanks from me. I’m revisiting these videos. I just saw a post I made on the previous video to the series where I asked what bit you were using. I was working on my first pre-drilled block. In this last year, I’ve made 20 pipes and restored about 150. If I had a dedicated area, a lathe and not a patio, I’d be even more crazy. :) About to build a shop for myself this fall at new home. Your work and videos have been great. Your pipes are beautiful.

Thank you and congratulations on the the new how where you'll be building a shop!!! I just subscribed to you and looking forward to seeing your work. I did post a new video series a few months ago where I go into how I make pipes now. The original video series was made years ago and I do things quite a bit different now. I do use a metal lathe for my drilling but shows you the process in case you ever get a metal lathe. kzbin.info/aero/PLdVI9G9_bD_AkYlW6TFXJxaMC8J2YOfWz

Awesome pipes, really!! I'd love to purchase one if you sell them. It's hard to put a price on something you put so much heart and work into but the pipes really are great!

AHHHH, you scared me at 6:45, I thought you dropped the dremel. Nice how you didn't speed up the audio with the sped up video. Thanks for the vids.

The stem is make from vulcanite which is a very hard rubber. You can also use acrylic stems or ebonite. There are plastic stems but they are usually a little cheap feeling. I've seen wood stems but they wouldn't hold up over time.

I think in Video 6 & 7 I go into this but I first stain the pipe black and sand it down. This leaves dark dye in the softer grain adding to the grain contrast. I then give 4 or 5 coats of a light dye. After that I buff it a bit with tripoli compound and the last step is buffing with carnuba wax. Thanks for watching.

Question? Are you using single or double cut carbide bits?

For the final look. Do you stain it then wax it? Or, do you stain then sand then wax?
