I’ve used reclaimed 48% alumina fire bricks. They were originally used in a kiln that made graphite rods.

Good video man! Do you know if there is any chance of toxicity due to the graphite in the original purpose of these bricks? I'm in the process of building my own portable pizza oven, the floor tiles that I'm using is grey granite about 20 mm thick, layed on a concrete slab I'm assuming that the granite will withstand the heat, .......?

@WATKINSGARYJOHN Thanks. Graphite is pretty safe, it’s just carbon and the kiln bricks would not have touched the graphite directly so I’m happy it’s as safe as licking the graphite in a pencil. Granite sounds nice to work with, the floor will be very smooth I imagine. I would be a little concerned about cracking though. I believe granite will transfer the heat slowly so one side would be hotter than the other. The alumina in the fire brick helps the heat move faster which reduces this problem. Good luck with your build, let me know how you get on.
