I’m born, raised and still live in East Oakland, and it’s no longer the Oakland it was in the 90s. 1200 sq foot homes cost half a million due to gentrification aka white folks moving in and taking over. It’s sad to see. My parents still live in their home in East Oakland since 1976 and real estate agents harass them often hoping they’ll sell my childhood home so some white family can move in. My daddy tosses all of their mail and gets them off of the phone quickly. We were also smart enough to put the house in a trust because you best believe, as soon as my parents close their eyes, realtors will be on that house like vultures.

Because, I didn't let the city assessors into my home to evaluate my homes worth, they devalued my home to 81k, but increased my annual property tax from $2100 to $2300. As a PA Certified Residential Real Estate Appraiser I can say this, if your house/you were singled out because of race that act is 100% wrong and unethical. Now with that being said, lenders typically require that if any personal/family photos are in the appraisal pictures (taken by the appraiser) it is required they be blurred or cropped out. This is done for privacy and possibly Fair Housing Regulations. The market value of whatever house is being appraised is determined by the comparable sales in the same or similar market and not by who is living there. As an appraiser I have been in thousands of houses and I really do not care who is living there, and I'm willing to bet the overwhelming vast majority appraisers feel the same way. If you were discriminated against it's 100% wrong but I'm feeling like there may be more to the story and you may have had an unrealistic view of your homes market value

Any personal item's, regardless of who the seller is, hinder the sale of any home. Buyers want to envision themselves in the home if the seller has photos and personal items displayed buyer's see them as living in the home and struggle to envision themselves there.

I'm a black appraiser and I don't believe it. Any appraisal can be challenged. You can have it reviewed by another appraiser and if it's wrong, you can file a complaint with the State. The appraiser can be fined or lose his/her license. It is illegal to include family photos in an appraisal and we can't use words like "desirable" neighborhood. Those comps need to be the most recent, closest in proximity and the most similar. If they are not, you don't have to accept the appraisal. You do not have to accept an appraisal if you don't like it. Now, I've gone into high class hoods and have been told I don't belong there by neighbors even though I'm just working. If the homes are multi-million dollars properties, you can get 5 appraisers and you'll 5 different values. It depends on the appraiser's knowledge and experience of and in the neighborhood.

When they put the house on the market the realtor told them to take the family photos off the wall because it would limit the buyers. They tell you to remove the pictures due to lending guidelines that say no: People, pets, religious symbols, or family photos can be in the appraisal report pictures. Agents also do this for safety as they cannot vet everyone that comes into the home so they don't want some pervert knowing what your kids look like and where their rooms are. You are correct with the laws. The appraisal industry is highly regulated and any suspicion of racial bias would result in multiple reviews of the report, complaints with the licensing boards, and a lawsuit. In reality he dumped a bunch money into a new house and it probably wasn't supported by the market. It's a common misconception that because you added a $50,000 pool your house is now worth $50,000 more and it simply doesn't work like that.

Michael Baker racism exists but it doesn’t dictate my life or restrict my movement. I’m focused on black advancement, black progress, and raising educated children who will be productive members of society. Every time DL appears in interviews in the last 2-3 yrs all he talks about is victimhood. His arrogance when he was given “reasonable advice” to take photos down before his home was appraised would’ve led to a different outcome. It’s not rocket science. I’m not in an interracial relationship but I don’t begrudge anyone who is. I live my life through an objective reality where everything isn’t always racist. Peace and love my brother. We can agree to disagree, diversity of thought is ok.

Every house gets appraised for less than it’s actual value so they don’t loose money or get sued. If they appraised it for too high and the bank lost money they would sue or go with a different appraiser next time. The bank’s appraiser always gives a low number because they are on the bank’s side your appraiser is probably going to give a high number because they are on your side. It’s a common sense. Something DL lacks.
