PART II: STRIPPING: Antique 70+ Year Old French Fishing Reel Custom Restoration
In this video I will be sharing the process of stripping the old paint off the Ru-Mer Super fishing reel in preparation for paint. The first video, showing how to disassemble the reel is available here: • Disassembling a 1950's...

PAINT STRIPPING BASICS:
Paint stripping from metal surfaces involves removing layers of paint or other coatings to restore the metal to its original state or to prepare it for refinishing. Here are the basic steps for paint stripping on metal:
First, you need to choose the right method. There are several methods for stripping paint from metal, including chemical stripping, mechanical stripping, and heat-based methods. Chemical strippers use solvents to dissolve the paint. Mechanical methods involve using abrasives like sandpaper, wire brushes, or abrasive blasting. Heat-based methods such as using a heat gun or a torch can soften the paint for easier removal. For my project I used Citristrip which is probably the least harmful/toxic stripper out there, however, in the next videos, I will also show how I used several abrasive wheels and polishing tips to get the final result.
With any method you choose, always select a well-ventilated area to avoid inhaling fumes or dust. If needed, lay down protective coverings to catch drips and spills, especially if using chemical strippers. Wear appropriate personal protective equipment such as gloves, safety glasses, and a respirator to protect against chemicals and dust. Be sure to follow the manufacturer's instructions for any chemical strippers being used.
Before proceeding with the entire surface, test your chosen paint stripping method on a small, inconspicuous area to ensure it won't damage the metal underneath.
Applying the Stripper:
If using a chemical stripper, apply it evenly over the painted surface using a brush or roller. Allow the stripper to work according to the manufacturer's instructions. This typically ranges from a few minutes to several hours, depending on the type and thickness of the paint. In som cases I left mine overnight. Once the paint has softened or dissolved, use a scraper, putty knife, or wire brush to remove the paint from the metal surface. I started with just water. For mechanical methods, such as sanding or abrasive blasting, follow the appropriate techniques to remove the paint without damaging the metal.
After removing the paint, clean the metal surface thoroughly to remove any residue from the paint stripper or paint. If needed, use a solvent such as mineral spirits or acetone to clean any remaining traces of paint or stripper.
After the surface is clean and dry, you may need to sand or polish it to achieve the desired finish. If you plan to leave it in just the metal finish, I recommend that you apply a primer or rust inhibitor to prevent corrosion, especially if the metal will be exposed to the elements. Finally, apply a suitable paint or coating to protect and finish the metal surface. I will be powder coating the reel in the next video.
Dispose of any leftover paint, paint stripper, or other waste materials according to local regulations. Some chemicals used in paint strippers may be hazardous and require special handling. Clean your tools and equipment thoroughly after use, following any specific instructions for disposal or storage. By following these basic steps and safety precautions, you can effectively strip paint from metal surfaces while minimizing risks and achieving the desired results.
Thanks for watching. Hope this has helped, be sure to check out the step by step videos I will be adding this week, feel free to ask any questions-wishing you the best! 1💙
