Enjoy this interview with 97 year old Mansee Subiah of Hermitage, Trinidad. She says her parents came from "Tanjaur" (Tanjavur??), Ramapattam, Devakal. She is a healthy senior citizen, walks with a cane, is strong, and still lucid. She eats mostly vegetables and the occasional fish or shrimp.
Hear Part One of her life story. Other Parts to follow

What a touching story. I am from Trinidad and this breaks my heart so much. I am half indian and grew up with my indian family. Alot of families have gone through what she's gone through. Both my great grandparents were from India. My great aunts and grandmother went to visit india to see the motherland. God bless this lady for telling her story.

You’re so correct! I’m also half Indian and my Indian sides are from Fiji and Trinidad. My great grandparents were able to visit India, but it wasn’t until they passed that our family has been able to put together all the records and do research to answer the missing pieces. A lot of information was passed down orally but it took a long time to find records and verify these things. Thanks to that, we’ve been able to reunite with some of our relatives in both north and south India! 😊 proud of our heritage and I’m also thankful to have heard this lady’s story! Such an amazing person

I am watching this video often every time I watch it my heart is very sad sometimes I cry many times so now it makes me want to watch it again and again How many Indians have passed to many countries they can't see their former people and many have died even now many once again they are Indians. They even think that they can come back to the country and meet their elders, they don't know whether it will happen or not, but if they come back, their mind will be relieved and they will be satisfied.

Indrani, Thanks so much for documenting her stories. When she talked about her mother's birthplace , she started to cry. That's really made me cry. If she is healthy enough to travel, I would like to arrange her a trip to Thanjavur [தஞ்சாவூர்]. One of the greatest Tamil poet, Maha Kavi Subramaniya Barathiyaar [ மகா கவி சுப்பிரமணிய பாரதியார்] written many poems about the plight of Tamil people in these places almost 100 years ago. Thanks again. God bless you grandma! I learned a lot from you today.

Talking to her would be like looking at our past 😭😭 May God bless her with long life.❤️❤️❤️ “Amma Enga pora, veetukku poraen, inga kunthu, naan Enna solluvaen, amma enga va,” - all these she is saying are colloquial conversation sentences in Tamil. The older gentleman is speaking in hindi to her. This shows that people from different ethno-linguistic groups from India were moved to work in Trinidad!

I often wondered about this, I am a Muslim from T&T and I am married to a Hindu Tamil from Sri Lanka (Ceylon) for over thirty years. I am very blessed by Allah because from my time, I am one of a very, very few people who left T&T all those years ago and reached far areas of Allah's earth, Sri Lanka and Australia being my anchors. The Tamil greeting to welcome someone is Vanakkam. I absolutely love this priceless historical gem. Alhamdu Lillah.

I came with my family to Trinidad and Tobago in 2017 specifically to learn about the Indian heritage. I wish I had watched this video earlier so I would have been blessed to meet this 97 year old whose heart still desires to visit her motherland--India. I am touched by Ms. Subiah's memory of Tamil and the rituals. My heart wrenched when I visited Trinidad and heard stories from 2nd and 3rd generation Indian origin Trinidadians about how their families were forcibly brought in ship by British through deceit. British owe an apology to all the colonies for the crime they committed when they ruled. How can I get in touch with Ms. Subiah? Please inform.

All over world Tamil community people living in different countries should come forward and make Tamil world council as a organization to preserve Tamil by teaching them Tamil and nowadays it so easy to learn Tamil through online class and by watching Tamil movies also you can be connected with language. And also Tamil Nadu state government from Indian should make some initiative to these people at least to visit once in lifetime their native places and should conduct cultural programmed,Tamil film shows and appoint some official and Tamil teachers and send them to Tamil speaking countries to teach tamil.

Last time I check Tamil Nadu is a state in India. Tamil were the minority brought to guyana and Trinidad. As indo guyanese my ancestors were brought from all over India but most came from the states of Bihar and UP they why you see the lady speaking bhojpuri and awadi as well as Tamil because Indians were brought from all over India to work sugar plantations. So they had to learn to speak each other language to communicate.

1:30 - 1:38 - can be understood by anyone who understands Tamil. She asks here "Where are you going?" and then answers "To meet the saami". Saami is still used in Tamil to refer to priests.
@soundcheck2k7
@soundcheck2k7 7 жыл бұрын
Not necessarily. "Saamy" is more of a Tamil term for "god", like "Karuppu Saamy", "Kumarasaamy", "Madasaamy", etc.
@prashobhsnair

I agree that the term is used in many situations including for God, priests, holy men, etc.
