I can finally bring you the long overdue third part in this series, where we look at the beautiful embellishments! As you can see, this project has unfortunately taken some set backs, and for a moment looked as though it couldn't be completed - but we're finally back on track!
Although it's delayed, the fourth and final part of this series is in the works 💙

I’m sure it will be fine ...as long as you can separate the difference between them say ...the original ones on the front and the synthetic ones on the back ? Did you notice that the synthetic ones only have four little legs whereas your original ones have five ? I still think nobody will notice BUT this is great because the video shows you having to overcome problems and disappointments and is more useful to us than someone who just sails through the whole thing. These videos of yours are truly inspirational . Please never lose sight of that . Onwards ! It will be so wonderful when it’s finished ...also I really admired the way you “ didn’t want to take the fun out of the whole thing “

They say opportunities often are disguised as challenges. It’s quite delightful to see you are able to get such a close similarity in color shades using dyes for two different textiles when it comes to the fan shape trims. Wonderful progress! Besides being resourceful in overcoming hurdles as such, your sticking to what your heart really wants despite environment situation is inspiring. In my opinion, it is beautiful to allow the natural unfolding of things while keeping working toward the goal. At the end of day, it IS a fun project.

The whole process of making this dress is just mesmerizing! I like that you also share the setbacks you encounter along the way and the actual amount of time such work takes, it really makes one appreciate it that much more.. Also, love the Bonjour Tristesse poster in the background, one of my favourite books. Thank you for sharing your work with us and I can't wait to see what's to come next!

I'm trying to think of some way to find more of that fan shaped trim, it has to be out there, somewhere. Do you have some costume design contacts in the entertainment industry? Give this some time, advice I wish, as a painter, I took more often in the past. Even if it means putting it aside for a while. I like the idea of sticking to the fuller silhouette. Meanwhile, with your talent and expertise, you can keep your viewers happy, whatever you choose to discuss or work on.

Henry, thank you for taking us on this journey with you. Deadlines on a project such as this one are meant to be broken. I'm sure we're feeling your disappointment that the maths didn't work as you'd wish and that you couldn't find more of the first trim, however my gran had an oft used expression that I think will suit your delightful finished dress when the fan shapes are mixed: "Nobody will know on a trotting horse," which of course in Mr. Givenchy and Miss Hepburn's case we'll have to change to 'thoroughbred.' Thanks again and best of luck.

Thanks Henry for your fashion archeology and reverent recreation of Audrey's iconic dress. To my eye the second tassel/appliques look rather different than the first. Sorry for the trouble you had with this. Also, I think the model wearing the narrower black version of the dress in the photo you showed is Capucine, another Givenchy muse and a friend of Miss Hepburn's. Fashion, beauty and memory intertwined...
@henryjjwilkinson
@henryjjwilkinson 3 жыл бұрын
They are different, but as close a match as I can find unfortunately. But I'm reluctant to compromise on the silhouette! And yes you're right, the wearer is Capucine who ordered the dress in black, as did Lee Radziwill 💙

HENRY WILKINSON, hope you will like this: I am currently reading a book called, BUNNY MELLON THE LIFE OF AN AMERICAN STYLE LEGEND. Bunny, one of the upper crust, I'd say, is a gardening expert to state mildly among other talents. Her fashion designer of choice was Balenciaga. When CB closed his shop he foisted Bunny onto Herbert De Givenchy who I believe you have heard of (!) to fill her needs.This would prove to work out well as these two would become lifelong friends. Bunny loved excess and well into old age she was still building and renovating new homes for herself. In the middle of such a restoration Herbert arrived on the scene. From the book: "Malcom Robson was painting the wooden floors in the Paris apartment when Bunny showed up with Givenchy. "He was about to walk all over the floors, which hadn't been protected yet," Robson says. "I said, 'you can walk on it but we can't have any shoes on it.' So he took off his shoes but he had the biggest hole in his sock. Everyone just cracted up laughing." So there you are.

@@henryjjwilkinson HENRY, I'm such a fan of yours and so happy this antidote may have made you smile! The book, BUNNY MELLON THE LIFE OF AN AMERICAN STYLE LEGEND is by MERYL GORDON. With the book in my hands I was so excited by it but then noticed how long and detailed it is - 'Can I really read this?' I'm still reading it and surprisingly hanginging on every word. It is so unique and compelling. A lot of family history but it really pulls you in. From my perception of you I think this tome might really be up your alley.... You can't be designing and creating every minute of the day so take a load off with this great book! Bunny Mellon, dead at 103, also happened to be Jackie Kennedy's best friend who happened to have a sister, Princess Lee Radziwill who once wore a pink dress...

Interesting how styles recycle eventually. Mid-century modern seems to be an echo of empire era. And now it is here again. The styles seem to ping pong between excess (Victorian), then simplified (Edwardian). Reactionary. ;)
