There’s a reason the History Channel has produced hundreds of documentaries about Hitler but only a few about Dwight D. Eisenhower. Bad guys (and gals) are eternally fascinating. Behind the Bastards dives in past the Cliffs Notes of the worst humans in history and exposes the bizarre realities of their lives. Listeners will learn about the young adult novels that helped Hitler form his monstrous ideology, the founder of Blackwater’s insane quest to build his own Air Force, the bizarre lives of the sons and daughters of dictators and Saddam Hussein’s side career as a trashy romance novelist.
New episodes twice a week on iHeartRadio.

this has all reminded me of when a friend of mine applied to be Janice's assistant as a joke and received the hilarious response from McAfee over email of "trans is fine, so long as you can do it full-time"

SPOILER ALERT: McAfee did not in fact live another 20 years after this podcast was made. However, he did kill at least one more person.

I will second the endorsement for Erowid. When I was curious about drugs as a teenager, reading the testimonials gave me the information I needed to know most of them weren't for me.

@@platedlizardAlso a teetotaler, but might go down the rabbithole of all these testimonials. Yeah, I cannot trust myself to not get super addicted to any drugs with my ADHD + bipolar II combo.

I like to think that John McAfee's dogs might have had pretty good lives (aside from the poisoned ones). He's got that whole compound lifestyle, which means a big yard, right? And he's got people, so you're not dependent on his bath salts levels when it comes to getting fed. (Plus I assume when it is time for McAfee to feed you, it's steaks and shit.) I get the sense that much of his entourage (security, "girlfriends," Vice snitches, etc) are probably dog people too, so you can probably scrounge up a scratch behind the ears when you need one.

Laci is one of my favourite guests! Such a beautiful voice & cadence, so clever and funny, and as a guest on with Robert and Sophie, such great chemistry/riffing between them. Even when she says stuff I disagree with - like the "Belize is trash" bit - I can't really get upset. lol! I know that was just a joke! She's a sweetheart and I know she's not going to trash good people like that.

Wow. The dude is really into the idea that he's got this femme fatale whose old sins are coming back to haunt her, but she's got a good heart and really loves him, so she's in a permanent state of self-conflict where she pursues the plot against him but always sabotages it at the last second. I bet with that first sex worker, he convinced himself that she really had a good heart and needed to be rescued from a life of villainy.

The Crutchfield catalog was a 1980s/90s thing, toys for big boys, car audio maybe some lightweight "spy" stuff etc. So maybe that's where the illustrious *Crutchfield* got his name.

I doubt this is a scheme. In the earlier episode it was clear this guy cannot consistently stay on one track very long. He habitually hops from thing to thing. But consistently over his life he has shown very obvious indicators for bipolar, paranoia, psychotic delusions, and/or substance abuse. He wouldn't be able to fake this, because he cant hold his attention to a single act for decades at a time. This was obviously a seriously mentally ill and addicted person. Idk how much moral responsibility he would even bear for a lot of his actions because he doesn't seem entirely lucid for much of his life.
