This is a double edged 🗡️. For generations, poorly learned people, people without all of their faculties, people from very poor backgrounds have been having children. Which is their right. Unfortunately it allows the cycle to continue causing more and more problems as the generations progress. It would be like dropping an aboriginal tribe in the middle of LA and telling them to acclimate overnight. There is no way to fix this that doesn’t violate a persons rights. There are ways to lessen the effects over time. But it will take generations of change. And it has to be done delicately.

100% it hurts too many too often. I watched kids get handed to parents who couldn't care for themselves much less children and those kids come right back to our facility in horrid shape, and some didn't make it at all. Happened time after time along with judges not listening to workers, just adding another "reunified family" to their tally.

That place was not fit for rats or snakes….I can’t believe there was any family member who was ok with leaving those kids in that garbage trap for even one hour…..when I saw those pictures I busted out crying. Holy cow... Judge Bartles needs to remember he's got to ensure the kiddos best interest, NOT the parents! Parent's are the one's who should be in CONSTANT contact with their caseworkers, lawyer, ANYBODY involved in their case around their kids! The people involved shouldn't have to run circles trying to get a hold of you! And CPS REALLY dropped the ball with these kiddos. They should have NEVER been placed in that next door home. These kids need normalcy!

Just when you think a case couldn't be more of a circus, in comes the clowns, the trapeze, the elephants, and of course the monkeys! I guess they are our monkeys after all & our circus too! Clearly nobody in their right mind could give these kids back to either parent, ever! He seems to have the mentality of a 5 yr old, & that's not even taking into acct his drinking. She's crazy! Eight children, low income, how can he possibly take care of them mentally, he really does not understand questions. So sad to see, those poor kids with these parents. Half his income for rent, he cannot take care of them.

Last hearing he was hospitalised for cirrhosis and continued and contuing alcohol abuse. That and mothers substance abuse combined with threats to the children and the uninhabitable living conditions was why the children were removed in the first place.

Exactly. I know it's an emergency placement, but it's not like CPS had to travel some distance or take anyone's word for it. Dad's sister/niece live right next door; just take a good look around before placing kids in a place that might be as bad or worse.

Ikr? I see this too often with both investigators and caseworkers. They testify in these hearings all the time, and they should know from the questions the CPS attorney asks in every case what kind of details they need to meet the legal standard for removal. Yet, they keep coming in and testifying that they didn't even ask the obvious questions when speaking with parents and collaterals. Can't someone give these workers a simple checklist of what to ask? It's one thing if a person won't answer, but there's no excuse for not asking the key questions.

The problem with this is it would allow judges in case workers to pick and choose which cases they just want to immediately terminate the rights for. They have their procedures for reasons and while it sucks for everybody around it also protects some parents that need to be protected in some cases. There is no perfect procedure for any of us. It's a bad situation all the way around in almost every case, but nobody should have the power to automatically terminate a parent's rights.

Resilient is a great way to get out of identifying resources for children in need. Many children don't say what they need because they are used to not having those needs met and often don't have the vocabulary to express needs in the first place. Kids cope with crap because they have to.

Judge Bartles has had a good run but I feel he needs to retire, maybe even do some ad litem\children's lawyer work because I've seen how he speaks with children and they seem to view him as a safe, grandfather like figure. He definitely needs to hang up his robe and retire with dignity rather than making the wrong call down the line with a child's life and it tarnishing his reputation forever because I've seen him make some questionable decisions regarding these CPS& custody cases. He is also all over the place at times which is expected with his age but t the very reason why he needs to enjoy his older age. Even so I do believe he is fair and old school but these new generations are a new breed that need a different kind of judge because I've not seen many hold their feet to the fire so to speak. Never seen so many parents just not only be addicted, mental health issues etc but just not give a rip and live like animals, blows my mind!

I tend to agree, I mean let's face it, being a judge is a career just like any other where eventually people do retire. I have seen some questionable things he has said and decisions he has made in other cases, and it demonstrates he is out of touch with many issues. Time for him to get his boat in the lake, or touch up on his golf game, and make room for fresh faces!

Irregardless of how awful and unfit the parents are his goal is always what's best for them. Neither one of these "adults" should be allowed to care for plants let alone children. This is clearly a case where the kids should be taken by the state and not given to any family members and possibly even adult protective services be called for dad on his family . He's definitely not mentally competent to care for himself or children. This case is maddening. Judge Bartles it's time to retire before someone audits your cases and finds the injustice you've served and mistreatment you've allowed to continue to who knows how many children in the name of parental rights.

He has to follow the federal guidelines for removal. He can’t just snatch the kids up and take rights away. They have to create a record.

If they just overlooked parents rights and were able to pick and choose which cases that they just want to automatically terminate rights in a lot of people would suffer. They have these procedures for a reason. They allow visitation, so it doesn't sever the bond between parents and children while things are being investigated. Imagine somebody having their children removed when they shouldn't have been and the judge just saying no to every type of visitation and then they go through the process and find out that they shouldn't have been removed to begin with. Those parents have lost out on time with their children on top of not being able to see them at all. They have to at least offer supervised visitation to begin with. We also can't allow them to pick and choose when to terminate rights based on their own feelings and initial circumstances. If we allow them to do that there would be people losing their rights in cases where the children shouldn't have even been removed to begin with. They have these processes for a reason and while they suck in cases where these things are warranted they are put in place for reasons.

You'd think they would educate their officers on what is expected of them in court and at least a general idea of the court process.

If a child is born out of wedlock, yes , a man must legitimize the child in order to get rights, but he is still obligated to pay child support if he signed the BC or paternity test has confirmed fatherhood.

If the system would stop rewarding single mothers with income per child without limits, they will stop having so many children. Kids are a source of income for her. Penalizing couples (married) so they don’t qualify for any services if the Dad is in the picture has lead to the breakdown of the family. Services should be temporary, not a way of life. We are hurting people instead of helping them.

These poor kids. Both of their parents are drug addicts. They have to literally watch one parent harm themselves with addiction to the point of killing themselves. The other parent can't get her shit together enough to look after these kids in this time of need. Having one addict parent is hard enough, it's really hard when both are. The kids have to deal with the trauma of having junkie parents & one of their parents dying over it. I hope these kids are healing. I wish them the very best.

Just finished watching this and just closed my mouth. The sad thing is this is only 1 out of thousands in the US. I'm sorry but I must say this father isn't fit to even have a neighbor let alone be responsible for ANY children. It's obvious he can't manage himself. His lack of intellect and poor decisions will not improve. I can't speak for mental illness because IDK . His alcoholism exacerbates these issues. He's 51 and has 8 children. Sometimes we have to look at the reality of things. These kids are young. Unfortunately between him and the mom's issues, the kids immediate needs will not be met. Their needs cannot and should not wait. I pray the children are placed in a safe environment away from them.

Seriously bad idea to ask CPS Worker for ride to pick up alcohol....seriously sad that the living facilities are so awful, the parents both severely dysfunctional ....and no supports to notice prior to this...I think this is a blessing for the children with a chance to be fed properly, medically cared for and hopefully ongoing good care...let parents have supervised visitation and that's it

It doesn't seem promising that the woman housing Brenda will have much luck getting her back with those two squatting in the other side of her duplex. She's going to have a tough row to hoe in order to pass all the safety and supervisory conditions the court lays down unless she boards it up and shoos them away via law enforcement. Sad and difficult, all the way around.

Well if the state of Georgia doesn't recognize rights for father's that aren't married to the mother unless or until they're ligitimized perhaps that's because too many women were claiming father's that weren't actually the fathers or too many men were trying to exercise control they weren't entitled too? That’s a bit of an exaggeration. The judge screaming was very unprofessional in my opinion. He did have to tell her to not argue with the defendant and he also told her to wait until the lawyer was done asking the question and she complied very well to both orders. She wasn’t unprofessional,she’s a non-perfect human just like the rest of us,including the judge and the attorneys.

This is mess, I like to know why the children have not been placed with the lady who raised the oldest from 3 months old too 2 years old, the kids live her and she loves them they want to be with her. Just sad, this father is a drinker and mother don't care. I feel like if the father really wanted his kids he would have got help a long tie ago. That home will never be fit cuz the father can't clean it he can't take care if himself. Man all I can do is pray for these children and pray they can be with the lady who actually lives them and took care of them for log time. Just sad and mess

How very very sad that people live like that and bring children into this world... shame on that entire family for allowing those two babies to be traumatized like this. When the officer testified that the little boy was sitting on the bed on his phone while his father was face down close to death and his mother was out of her mind in a roach infested home of filth it broke my heart. That sweet baby thought that was NORMAL just another day and his sister was next door in that other house of filth because it was 'safer' I cannot believe these children were placed on a VK for a week in that disgusting house with a plastic tote replacing the bath tub and roaches with no gas or electricity for 1 minute let alone 7 days!!! WE HAVE TO DO BETTER as a society. This case is incredibly sad. That man needs to be court mandated to be medicated and placed in an adult Foster home and appointed a guardian... meanwhile he's 51 and has 8 children! His niece was disgusting fooling around in a car cussing and screaming charges should be brought against ALL of those involved.

The system worked in this case even though they should have stepped in earlier. Those kids may not have had much longer to live. Hope they get away from this environment and thrive with a new loving family.

Omg thats as bad if not worse than where they were. Poor children. How can people live in a place like this. I started to say home but i don't think you could call that a home. Its sad that people live this way they would have to be drug addicts to stay there.

Sick and wrong,neither parent can take care of anything, the oldest child was already in foster care for 2 years. And the relatives next door know how they live how could they let them live like that with 2 children. Sad really sad ppl in there own family turn blind eye. I don't think the father can care for the children at all the mother should just not be allowed to get them back. Just so sad

Georgia’s legitimation rule is so biased against dads, I don’t see how it’s even legal. Even if dad is on the birth certificate, if that child is born out of wedlock, the dad has no rights whatsoever and mother has sole custody. But dad still pays support if they split. I think that’s hilarious and shameful. I wish all courts recognized Dad as equal to Mom. Always loved that about Judge Judy lol. If she had a case and mom said “well, I left and took my daughter with me” JJ would say “you were wrong. That’s not YOUR daughter! She’s from both and Dad is just as qualified to have custody as you. You’re not any more of a parent than him”. She always stood up for the Dads.
