If you replace the pads (or shoes) the brake discs (or drums) should be turned to provide even braking. Also there are shims and paste to eliminate the squeaking of the pads.

Don't turn your brake rotors either. It'll make them too thin and they won't cool properly. I personally wouldn't sand brake pads either, but I guess that's not as dangerous as what I've seen some people do

properly clean disks and caliper with brake clean, chamfer the upper and lower portion of the new pads with a file and apply a small amount of anti seize to the new pad flanges and at inner metal plates of pad backing. clean caliper guide pins (which can be removed from caliper) and reinstall. perform "bedding in" procedure (medium brake pressure) applied for the next 10mi at speeds of 30-50 mph. no panic stops. this will eliminate brake squeal for at least another 2500 miles on new pads. brake squeal is something that happens especially with sports/performance pads and rotors. but proper lube and cleaning can ensure minimal occurances. weathering/temp changes and usual wear will naturally allow for squeal so if you can make time to do this when it happens you can stop squeal for a few thousand km/miles, also BG stop squeal works well if you coat new pads with it prior to installation of new pads
@brebre3582Ай бұрын
Nice quick video thank you. Just remember though. That thing is not a "brake disc" its correct name is Rotors. And that screw driver trick, you need to explain "carefully insert" and needs a stronger screw driver if those pads are worn down. Also you stopped without showing the full replacement! Sometimes there is trouble wirh the cylinder not going in all the way!

@creepyunclephil2 ай бұрын
Mmm.Mmm ... I mean yeah, but no. For in order for this to be a good brake job, I'd do a bit more than just slapping on new pads. Gotta turn the rotor, clean the hub so you don't have vibration from the wheel, clean and lube the guide pins, and if it's an older car, put new pistons and seals into the calipers. Also test the brake fluid and see if there isn't excessive moisture in it in case of an older car. It's not gonna apply even pressure with steam in the system.
@GMbowtie350Ай бұрын
Sounds like you’d just try to run the bill up on the customer. All of that only needs to be done on a need be basis except the lube part. I don’t know how cleaning the hub reduces vibration but ok. Also nobodies rebuilding calipers, dude. If a caliper is bad you replace the caliper.
@creepyunclephilАй бұрын
@GMbowtie350 Have you seen the quality of a lot of the remans, though? I've seen ones where cracked pistons weren't even replaced, but they just put metal rings on them to bridge the gaps. This is a diy-centric video, so the time it takes is irrelevant. Rebuilding calipers is laughably easy, and for most people their existing cores will be in a much better shape than some of the junk the part stores get. Lastly, the wheel hub is a mounting surface that the wheel is attached to. Would you argue that bad wheel balance does not cause vibration? Of course you wouldn't (I hope). So imagine you have a heavy truck rim with 32s on it, happily spinning at let's say 735rpm which would be 70mph. Okay, now put a 0.060 shim between two of the studs. You just introduce a high spot on the mating surface. The wheel will now wobble. If you calculate it assuming the wheel is a 32" weighing about 100lbs, at 70mph, you basically have the equivalent of 89lbs wobbling side to side at 735 times a minute. That's how the vibrator in your phone works. Now let's be realistic and halve that down to 0.030. Take your feeler gauge and see how small 0.030 is. Dirty, rusty hubs are no good, man.
@GMbowtie350Ай бұрын
@@creepyunclephilI’ve run rims that had cracks welded up that had no vibration, and I promise a weld bead is heavier than a .030 shim. By that logic a missing lug nut would make it almost vibrate apart. What you’re talking about is so minuscule you’d never tell it. As far as the caliper goes, yeah parts suck right now, but it comes down to time X money. It’s worth more of my time to bench bleed a new caliper and throw it on than rebuilding the old one. Don’t get me wrong, what you’re saying makes sense, it just doesn’t work like that in everyday business.

Once again, using a crescent wrench, theyre for emergencies like when you get an odd sized bolt. Use a proper wrench for the job, youll eat the corners on bolts with a crescent wrench. $30 for 4 pads… now i see why your rotors are grooved. Cheap pads have a poor lifespan, bad braking distance and will ruin your rotors. If you dont have the money, dont buy the cheapest parts, buy the 2nd or 3rd cheapest. Theyre usually higher quality, but always oem spec if possible. Safety is crucial here esp on cars, buy parts that you can rely on. I always recommend ceramic pads as they can get you 100k+ miles if you dont ride/slam your brakes.

@GMbowtie350Ай бұрын
The brakes are a sealed system. If you’ve got “junk” in your lines you’ve already got problems. I’m 37 and been doing this all my life in and around shops and I’ve never seen anything like what you’ve described happen. The caliper pistons have to be pushed back in or the new pads will never fit.
