Idk if it was done like this in the book, but the thing about partials using pheromones to communicate emotions sounds like it could be an interesting parallel to neurodivergent people, like with the whole thing about other people thinking they’re robotic and emotionless, when really they just communicate emotions differently.

The whole pheromone bit you talked about at 13:04 reminded me a lot of the elcor from mass effect, so that aspect of the partials seems pretty cool

If they bioengineered humanoid slaves, why would they give them the capability to out think regular humans. But more importantly, why does this girl need a "partial" ... didn't they create them in the first place? You'd think they would have a bunch captive or their entire DNA mapped out and stuff.
@albertkonikowski19302 жыл бұрын
But the Partials were probably created by the government which wouldn't want ordinanry people to know how to create them. Besides that the Partials were used as soldiers and that job needs intelligent people.
@turtle49262 жыл бұрын
Because they were made for war. They had to outsmart human enemies. And no, they don't have a bunch captive because the surviving humans aren't the world's strongest and brightest. They're just trying their best because they're the only ones left. There weren't any geniuses in the story. Just people trying to escape extinction. In the beginning of the trilogy, they knew they wouldn't stand a chance against even a small group of partials. Capturing one only became an option when every other logical direction lead to a dead end. Also, they barely had the technology for complex medical/scientific procedures. They used the few solar panels they had to power their hospital (mostly the maternity section) and the rest of the community survived on candles for their homes and hand cranks for their handheld radios. If the remaining humans didn't have gene mods installed pre-apocalypse to protect them from the diseases we have today, I'm pretty sure everyone would've just died from those years before the story started. I agree that the books weren't groundbreaking or mindblowing and the ending was a little disappointing. But I think it's worth the read. I'm not forcing you or anything hahaha. I just felt like defending this book a little (not that you were attacking them) because I did enjoy reading it for the reasons James has already enumerated 😅

Uglies and Scythe are (at least to me) some top tier YA dystopian
@mynamejeff35453 жыл бұрын
I read Uglies on Wattpad several years ago, I think it might've been the first draft or a completely slimmed down version, because I found it lacking in most aspects. The worldbuilding was interesting but it was too short, the romance was trite and there were some really weird metaphors in there. The author claimed the book was getting published, but I hope a different version than the one available on wattpad was published.
@Megafreakx33 жыл бұрын
@@mynamejeff3545 Ummm the book came out in 2005 while Wattpad wasn't around until a year later. (and even than I don't think Scott Westerfeld has an account on there). Personally pre-Hunger games, it was a solid book series. At least it had more world-building than most Hunger games clones.

20:52 I'm confused about where these "five dollar words" are coming in. I don't think the language is too over the top at all. In fact I think it's too prosaic. "It doesn't have to be this way!" God if I had a dollar for every time that phrase popped up in books. It feels verbose because it's repetitive more than flowery. A lot of words being used to say very little. Edit: I guess to be more clear, I don't consider words like "existence" or "desperate" to be super fancy, and they were the most complex words I heard in the excerpt.
