Watching this great explanation by an awesome teacher, I pondered the difference between participle (participial?) phrases (clauses?) and reduced relative clauses commonly used in both written and spoken English.

Knowing that she was sick, great care was taken to break the news of the death of her husband. Is this a participial phrase? It describes what? Similiar sentence was used, the first sentence, by Kate Chopin in "The Story of an Hour": The Story of An Hour" Kate Chopin (1894) Knowing that Mrs. Mallard was afflicted with a heart trouble, great care was taken to break to her as gently as possible the news of her husband's death.

Dear sir, is it that participial phrases do only do an adjectival modification function of the noun phrase? I can't quite make out the following: 1. FINISHING THE LESSON, they left the classroom. 2. AFTER FINISHING THE LESSON, they left the classroom. Sir, are those in caps in sentences 1 and 2 participial phrases? I feel like as if they are modifying the verb Left. Moreover, in 2 the phrase starts with After. Does that make it an adverb phrase?
