@@thelearningdepot so the confusion is "realizing he is going to fail the exam Jaden hired a tutor" in this sentence participle phrase "realizing he is going to fail" can also be an adverbial phrase depending on the context? Because here it also sounds like describing the verb "hire". I mean A. why did he hire? B. Realizing he is going to fail. So here it also seems like describing the verb "hire". So would it also work like this depending on the surrounding of the context. ?

This is the question in our exam. Which of the following exemplifies a sentence with participial phrase? A. Having finished the homework, Matt turned on the television. B. Walking in the hallway is one of my morning routines. My answer was A because the phrase acts as as an adj. It describes the noun (Matt). However, it's marked as wrong according to the answer key. I just want to clarify this and I hope that you can help me. I am very confident with my answer though. Thank you in advance 😊
@thelearningdepot

You are correct. The first one is the participial phrase which acts as an adjective. The second is a gerund phrase acting as a noun. You could replace it with the pronoun “this” to test it out.
