I'm both a ballroom and ballet dancer, and I thought I'd point out that these Dos and Don'ts are basically identical for Ballroom partnering. The overlaps are always interesting!

Great information, Kirsten. I would add that communication between partners is key. Too many inexperienced female dancers show no connection to their male partners. If that "heart to heart" connection is not there, the male partner becomes nothing more than a prop. This is a pet peeve of mine when rehearsing pas de deux. Watch Fonteyn and Nureyev to see how it should be done.

Jillian B same! I want to go to a professional ballet school in a few years but I’ve never done partnership since there is no boys. So I’m gonna have to check for pas de deux classes around me 😭

Can you do more partnering videos? This was great, and I would love more!

I've had a best friend for 8 years and I've partnered up with him for dancing in the last few months. It's kind of awkward because earlier this year he had confessed that he's loved me for a few years and I don't feel the same way. We have to act romantic towards each other and I feel really uncomfortable because I don't know what he's thinking and I don't know how to move past it. Any advice on how to move forward would be appreciated :)

I recently had my first partnering experience (we only have two boys at my ballet school) and it was ait of a flop because even though I was with the tallest guy there he was shorter than me when I was on pointe

Hey, I was wondering if you can make a video about dance in university (I know you already did a series on it), but specifically about living in a dorm and being on a meal plan.... from a dancers perspective? it would mean a lot for me as I'm moving to study dance in university in a month

I've always wanted to try partnering but my studio doesn't have any guys so they're aren't any pas de deux classes. Does anyone know of a class or a workshop around la?

Thank you for the pointers! Would you say it's a good idea for guys to pracitce some pointe to understand the ladies mobility ? I heard from a podcast about a dude trying to learn tango, but he learned the female role first to get a comprehensive picture of the dance

Great video!! One question about rehearsing pas de deux. Do you prefer to rehearse the full pas de deux first to train stamina, and then to clean the choreography by stages, or the other way round - fist clean by rehearsing fragments, THEN rehearse the whole pas de deux? Assuming there is still time to performance.

today i had my first partnering class, and we did way more than basics, we did pirouettes and rlly big lifts like shoulder sits. i’m not going to say my age but i am young especially for doing shoulder sits! tomorrow i have class with a guy who i barely know at all, he doesn’t know what he’s doing and i am so scared like the poor guy just doesn’t understand. and i barely know him so that doesn’t help. advice please???

Guys lifting heavier girls frequently can cause lifelong back pains. My male cousin does ballet and he avoids partnering with certain girls. He’s respectful to everyone but sorry, it’s far more important for a guy to avoid lifelong back pain than to avoid hurting a girl’s ego. In China, ballet theaters pretty much kick out heavy girls at a young age, because unlike the West, they do care about men and their health.

Um... well, it's like a date. Make a lot of eye contact. And... act like you're really interested in what she has to say. Touch her frequently... but only in the right spots... and hold.
