JaMarcus Horne Appreciate the question! Listen, you're 30, you've got a lifetime ahead of you so it's not too late. Happy to hear that you're at least looking to find a career path and study a subject. Like I said in the video, it depends on your interests in a particular area of tech. Sounds to me you like to get your hands "dirty". You're doing the right thing by starting with an AS so keep on it. You'll eventually figure out which area you like best once you get into the info/class material and get started in a job. Keep inspired my friend! Glad to have you stop by.

I know its a 5 year old video but thanks. Ive had a few IT jobs and still feel like I can't quite describe the various roles. Unlike many careers there isn't a clear order/hierarchy of what to pursue or what to study for.

The jobs discussed in the video still apply today although lots has changed. I agree, it is confusing on which route to take in I.T. The best I can say is figure out what part of technology is interesting to you and then see what jobs apply to that area. Then dive in.

This year I will be going back to school for a career change. I'm a 30 year old veteran and I have chose to pursue a associate degree in IT, I chose this because I'm good with computers, smart phones and electronics and such. Even at my work I'm helping ppl figure out software programs or how to set up accounts and what not. Am I choosing the right path? Last thing I want is to waste time and effort this late in my life. Thanks for any advise and input from both you and your subscribers

LeSean Reynolds Glad it helped. The IT world is big so when you're considering which area to focus on, stick with it. But yes you do have to get into the trenches and keep up with what's going on. But like any good profession, it's the same thing. Constant learning, improving, & growing.

Yea it's definitely a broad field...that is why i decided to just start by getting the A+ N+ and S+ Certs...start an entry level position and kind of branch off from there....im most likely going to end up going the Cisco route....I did an internship at a company my mother worked for awhile ago as a network engineer and i loved it....Also, my brother recently gave me a server, which i am going to install server 2008 on and use to set up Active Directory....

+Information Technology Q & A Show (William C) Hi, William! So I'm in my 3rd semester, and MOST of my studies were about Programming, and since I'm not really into Programming (especially Coding), thus I got really, really bad grades. Just wanna ask : Is Programming really important for me? Even if I'm not really into it? Thanks.
@learnitfromwilliam
@learnitfromwilliam 8 жыл бұрын
+Raymissa Wukfy Hello Raymissa. If you read your question out loud, I think you'll realize you answered your own question. Here's what I read. You're taking programming classes but don't like programming. So why are you taking those courses if programming is not the area of I.T that you want to work in? Unless it's part of the curriculum, then you'll have to stick it out and get through them.
@raymissa
@raymissa 8 жыл бұрын
+Information Technology Q & A Show (William C) Umm actually because it IS part of the curriculum, so nonetheless, I just had to take those studies. And I don't know if I AM really bad in programming studies or maybe I still don't realize yet the importance of the uses of programming for my life or some-whatever it is, and strangely some of my college friends are good (in programming). Technically, I took I.T. to get into jobs like Networking, Information Systems, or somewhat in that area. So, on your opinion, should I get along and just deal with these programming lessons and stuffs until the time where the "Networking & Information Systems (or somewhere near them)" lessons comes? Really glad to have your reply :)
@learnitfromwilliam
@learnitfromwilliam 8 жыл бұрын
+Raymissa Wukfy Ok, got it. So this school curriculum requires programming classes. In that case, you have to take them to complete your degree, no? And realize this. You can be good at something but it doesn't mean that's what you have to make a career out of. Otherwise, you'll be unsatisfied even though you're "good" at it. In your case, you may be good with programming but if sitting behind a desk all day looking at code is going to make you miserable, it doesn't make much sense...

Instant sub over here! Love the clarification of the jobs within IT. I just started my study in IT in Holland, and within an month I need to choose my path within IT. I'm hesitating between Information Security and Business and IT. But I don't know what kind of jobs there are out there within those paths? And what are your predictions of those two paths?
@learnitfromwilliam
@learnitfromwilliam 8 жыл бұрын
+JerryWhoopX Thanks Jerry for watching and asking a question! Info Security is a bit more defined as a field of study. It's a growing sector and I'm sure there's no shortage of work in the future and even now. Here's an article talking about those types of jobs: www.tripwire.com/state-of-security/off-topic/the-top-10-highest-paying-jobs-in-information-security-part-1/ The second field you mention is too broad. You have to isolate which area of Business I.T. unless you're going for a degree in Info Systems of which includes some of the business "stuff".

Hello, I'm 20 years old, I've always been tech savvy, I build all my computers, hook up all my tv's, routers, and modems, etc. I'm currently working full time as a CSR for Uber and I want to get into IT. I've thought about going back to school, also considered just getting certification and seeking an Entry level position. However, I don't want to do another desk job and something that pays somewhere in the same range, I get paid about $16/hr right now and I have good benefits, what do you suggest? I have a huge passion for technology and computers and everything that encompasses it. I just don't know how to get there from where I am now without uprooting my life and taking a cut in pay and benefits.
@learnitfromwilliam
@learnitfromwilliam 7 жыл бұрын
Hey Nick. I have to be honest with you. $16 an hour is OK here in the states. That's barely making it. Unfortunately in I.T., you have to start at the bottom, there's no way around that. And that means starting at a low salary. You should be able to find an entry level position around that same salary you're at now with benefits, etc. Watch my video on "where i started" to get an idea... With your experience, you should be able to at least get the A+ certification just to get you started and something for the resume. Then go from there depending on what discipline in I.T you want to pursue.

Great video! I have a question. Why does it kinda seem like there is no more job title for Management Information System people? Nowadays it's just I.T. or Programmers/Developers. Please correct me if I'm wrong about M.I.S. i believe the nature of the work they are into deals more with decision support system whatever that means.. Please give me a more in depth idea about what these people specializes in. I think they are the ones that link I.T. and business.

@learnitfromwilliam
@learnitfromwilliam 7 жыл бұрын
Hello Aeryan. It depends on what type of systems engineer. It's a generic I.T. role so we have to identify first what job role most interests you and then figure out what certs to go for. For example, if you know you'll be working with the Windows O/S, then you'd persue the M/S certifications (MCSA, MCSE, etc)..

Question so many people said you need to learn code to be a system admin. Is the GUI of servers will becoming the end of life in servers ? And it will be straight terminal like windows server core or centos minimal
@learnitfromwilliam

I don’t believe Windows Server UI are going anywhere anytime soon. Learning to code is not even related to server admin work. Two diff careers. But I will say that if you have the tenacity to learn code, you will never be without work in IT.

This video is really useful. Do you have some advice for me? I'm about to get a master's degree in pure mathematics and I want to start a career in IT. After watching this video I think I'm more interested in programming/development, however I'm applying for a job as IT support technician at a company which offers certifications and vacancies for beginners (for some reason). After getting some experience (1-2 years maybe), knowledge and certifications (although I'm not sure which ones I should get as a beginner), I've considered two roads: (1) Either following some traineeship in IT (I found one which is aimed for master students with background in math) or (2) Studying a second master's but this time in IT (again I've seen a couple of master's in IT for students with math background). Do you think this is a good plan? Do you have any advice in general and/or any advice about what should I be doing right now? One thing I'm worried about is my age (I'm 26), is it a problem if I start a career in IT until now?
@learnitfromwilliam
@learnitfromwilliam 8 жыл бұрын
+Antonio Campos Hello Antonio. First, your age is perfect. Don't worry about that! I'm curious why you are going for a Master's in math if you want to pursue a career in I.T? What is your Bachelor's degree? If you want to get into I.T., you may want to consider a masters in Computer Science or Engineering especially if you have an interest in programming/development. Now, about your career options. Yes I would take the entry level position if the opportunity presents itself. I would take advantage of the certification options they provide as well if they fit your career path. Just be careful though...some companies will pay for your education but you are obligated to stay with the company for a specific period of time after you finish classes/certs/programs. Check with the company. But yes it will help with exposure to technology and stepping stone into the I.T. world. Plus if you like the company, and they like you, it may lead to bigger opportunities. Hope that helps.
@antoniocampos6016
@antoniocampos6016 8 жыл бұрын
+Information Technology Q & A Show (William C) Well, it may sound silly but when I started my master's in math I knew absolutely nothing about IT (my bachelor's degree is about pure math as well), I started to know a bit more about IT when I was trying to decide whether or not pursuing a PhD in Math is a good idea (it was relatively easy to realize that IT is what I want to do instead). Last Monday I had an interview for a vacancy as IT support technician but unfortunately I got rejected due to a lack of computer knowledge, so now I'm focusing on getting A+ certification and try again until I get an entry level job. In any case, my objective is a traineeship or master's in IT (I've checked a couple of master's programs and they include software engineer as specialization, so it seems to me that this is more convenient than a master's in computer science for example). It might be difficult due to my background but I really want to do this and I'm working hard to get there.

Just FYI, I'm working as data scientist in an IT company. As a pure mathematician, Data Science is definitely the road to follow. And you're right, programmers are good-paid ;)

Hey there! I really enjoyed your videos. I have a lot of interest in IT, I'm an MIS undergraduate in the University of the Pacific in Stockton CA. I have a combination of all the functions of IT pretty much, except that I lack the good Programming skills, and the cabling stuff for networking. I worked with Windows 2012 R server, but as a virtual machine on VirtualBox. My question is, how do you get better at it and be attractive for companies? Even though I have an MIS degree, but that alone isn't enough for companies to hire you. Thanks!

Added to favs. I'm in the process of going back to Seminole State College. They have a Bachelors in IT, but it's requires less math. They have a security track though. UCF has a bachelors in IT, but it requires more math & focuses more on science. Do you think I should do the Seminole or the UCF BA? What would an employer prefer? I work for the local government & plan on getting a entry level IT position with the City
@learnitfromwilliam
@learnitfromwilliam 9 жыл бұрын
***** Small world my friend. I'm from the same area as you here in Florida. Did you see the UCF banner on my wall in the video? Big fans here! It really depends on how far you want to take your career. BA's are usually required when you want to get into management positions (although there are exceptions). SSC is the less expensive option for sure if you want a BA and I don't think it will matter for an employer. BA's are also usually a broad range of areas in tech so it touches on a little bit of everything, plus useless crap (math, etc..) You also may want to consider ITT Tech in Lake Mary. They also have a BA program but they dig deeper into the technology and probably less irrelevant classes unlike UCF or SSC. Also, check with your employer to see if they have a tuition reimbursement plan. If so, take advantage! Lastly, start doing some self study as much as possible on your own until you start school. There's tons of info on the net and if you can, get yourself an old computer you can start messing with. Once you feel comfortable with the basics, don't be afraid to apply for the entry level positions. You'll learn as you go. I talked about this in another video... "how to get a job in it" Take care! What are some classes you suggest to takes to get into field of Network admin? I have electives that I need to pick. I was just wondering if there were any you can suggest. I do not want to limit myself to one specific area. I have experience in sql, data base, operating systems. I hated discrete math lol on a side note.
@learnitfromwilliam
@learnitfromwilliam 8 жыл бұрын
+Jeremy Pearson The classes will depend on what area of I.T. you want to get into and what they have to offer. You mentioned SQL...if a SQL admin role interests you, take more SQL classes. If you want to learn more of the O/S stuff, take Microsoft courses (windows server) or Linux. Or, if you want to do the networking stuff, take classes related to network and security (ie, cisco, network +) Hope that helps.

So I am about to start college majoring in IT and I am currently teaching myself programming because programming is a huge part of the intro courses for the major. I really enjoy the coding part of IT and am thinking about information security and assurance. I am not sure if you know a lot about that area of study but maybe you have some knowledge on it that could answer some of my questions such as is there a bunch of advanced math in it like more than just your basic math skills. What certifications would be the best to pursue while in college? And I have a family friend who works for AT&T and is going to try and get me a internship next summer. As far as internships go how much would a student need to know before starting a internship. You may not know the answer to that last question but anything is helpful because I am a little lost. Thanks

+Hanan M.H.S Hi Hanan. Thanks for the question. First you have to identify which area of I.T. you want to work/study. From there you can decide on which educational path to take. Sounds to me you have an interest in programming/ application development. So I would seek out schools that offer classes in those categories. There are online courses that you can take as well if the local schools do not offer them. Yes, HTML is a very basic programming language. Hope this helps. +Robin Leckey Hi Robin, glad to see you back in the comments! Computer Science degrees is a focus area and very specific. Whereas "info systems" has a wide range of areas in the I.T. space. They are both equally important and yes there will always be work in both sectors. What really matters is which area of I.T. interests you. Once you know that, then you can decide on further education if required. About the salaries, I talked about this in a previous video. Here's the link in case you haven't seen it: kzbin.info/www/bejne/a3fcpKagoq6spqM Hope that helps and keep asking questions!

Hey I'm a new subscriber and I'm currently a college student and in the degree of health science but I'm thinking of switching to a IT degree and hopefully IT job like my father. I've been watching your videos to get an idea about IT and what it's like. So finally my question is how do serve administrators do the troubleshooting and monitoring, what kind of tools will I be using if I pursue this kinda of career? Thanks for the videos they've given me a good amount of information in IT and I'm considering the switch.

I am from the houston, tx area and i been looking at HCC, San Jacinto, Lee college just to name a few but i mean there programs dont really say if they are for beginners, intermediate, or X-amount of experience. Do you recommend a certain degree program for beginners? What would be a good place to start.....? for beginners. Thank you so much sir.

If IT companies hire people who are jack-of-all-trades, do you have any suggestions for what degree you should get? From some course outlines I've read, it seems like CS is the best route to becoming a jack of all trades, but (taking into consideration what you actually want to do) would it be better to get a CS degree then also become a specialist in what you want to do or simply become more advanced in all areas (i.e. become a "better" jack of all trades)?

+Flash Hydra Hello Flash. It's a great question. If you have the tenacity & willingness to get a 4 year degree, by all means, go for it. Choosing the type of degree depends on which path you prefer to follow. (Ie. what job roles interest you) Once you determine that, then you'll probably want to seek out certifications in that area as well and that you can do starting now. No need to wait because the market place rewards those with certs and you can probably find work before you're done with a degree. The jack of all trades scenario usually occurs in smaller organizations where the I.T. dept is more tight. Everyone in an admin type role will have to have a broad spectrum of knowledge; that's just the truth. But it all comes with time and continuous learning. For now, focus on where to start your education and get your foot in the door.

+Information Technology Q & A Show (William C) Thanks for the great advice (especially on the certifications - I didn't know what those were until I started watching your videos). I'm still in high school so I've got a lot of time to decide what I want to do, but I honestly don't know what exactly I see myself doing in the future. I think I'll be involved in some form of software design... From what I've seen, working at Google appears to be the best thing in the world but I've also read that the chances of getting a job there are slim to none. What's worse is the fact that I live in Australia, a reasonably unsophisticated country in terms of technology, so from my point of view there's "absolutely no way that I'll be able to find work anywhere". Long story short, do you have any tips for at least finding a job that suits you (one that will take full advantage of your skill set instead of making you do something that you aren't interested in and/or are not good at) even if it's not the biggest company in the world?

Hi William, I've been watching your videos and I have to say they have been really informative in respect to this job field, although I have some questions. I'm currently attending my local state university, and was contemplating pursuing a degree in IT. My school offers this as a minor, as well as associates and bachelors degrees. I just recently returned to school after being out for 2 years, and am currently doing my gen eds. The bachelor's my school offers in this field have a lot of business courses that I am thinking will almost be useless to me in the job field. Is this true? How much more would a Bachelors in IT matter verses an Associates? Or versus just a minor in the area? Also, would it be better (or possible) for me to get a deskhelp job NOW, or any other IT job, just to get relative work experience in the field? I've done the research and I'm fairly certain I want to pursue this line of work, but for a college student with no official experience in IT, what's the best things for me to do now, to better my chances later when I choose to finish my Bachelors or Associates? Thanks again, Johnny

I know no one that is in the IT field and need help deciding the job I want to go after. I'm good at troubleshooting but I can't stand to code. I took a computer programming class last year. I don't want to sit behind a desk and talk to people all day. Something hands on would be nice. Maybe what You said with the servers or maybe something in network security. My question is what do I go into in college to get one of these jobs and what do you recommend for me could be any job in the it field that you think I might like. Thanks

+T-MaN Gaming Hello and thanks for watching and the question. So you've already ruled out programming and any type of tech support / desktop support role that requires phone work (because you don't want to talk to people). So yes, you'd be better suited for an administration type role that works hands on with the equipment. Now you have to decide which area of administration you'd like to go into. Do you want to go with Microsoft, Linux/Unix, Networking (Ie, Cisco), Anaylyst, etc.... Once you decide, then you can figure out what classes to take or which specialized college to get into. Let me just say that you will probably start out in an entry level job that requires some interaction with users (desktop support/pc support), so be prepared for that.

What is the best plausible entry-level position to build my career?? What skills should I build to start off? +Wayne Lim Hello Wayne, appreciate you watching the video's and asking a question. There are different IT degrees and then there's Computer Engineering which is specific. It does require lots of math. So you'll have to look at the different IT degrees out there aside from CE. One thing I can say is that with any Bachelors degree, there will be some math courses in the curriculum which is normal for any BS degree. But if you go the route of a technical school, they don't focus so much on mathematics, it's more concentrated on the I.T. field. Make sense?

Very informative video! Is there anywhere in IT an Accounting major with some IT certs could be useful? My school offers an MIS degree, however the classes are so basic that they end up just giving you basic foundational knowledge, and I never saw much value in an MIS degree. I always felt IT certs were the way to go because they seem like a truer test of knowledge believe it or not! Of course I know you need experience too.
@learnitfromwilliam
@learnitfromwilliam 7 жыл бұрын
I don't know where accounting would fit in with I.T. An MIS degree is too generic in my opinion. Sure it'll look good on a resume but what will you do with it? The bigger question to ask yourself is what area of I.T. do you want to work in? Then you figure out which educational path to follow.
@EvaSlash
@EvaSlash 7 жыл бұрын
I would probably like to work in the area that maintains, and keeps up to date the information systems. So I suppose I would like a more administrative role. Only reason I chose to study accounting was to make myself more financially literate and have an idea of the financial sides of a company, so the accounting education was more of a "personal thing" for me if that makes any sense. Maybe I can try to self study for some IT certs and start out entry level or something. Feels kind of weird though because my major course of study is in Accounting and it is kind of late to change it to anything else.

What if I like IT (my major and I got Bachelor) but have no interest in all those aspects 😂 I'm kinda lost as to where to proceed in this field, for example if I were to take a Masters or applying for my next job. I've always loved graphic design and actually won some logo contests online, but I don't feel like it's my thing or in other words, I don't like it as my career. So I narrowed my choices to web developing and networking but I'm still confused cause I hate coding and I don't know that much about networking. I would really appreciate your advice :) I'm 26 by the way with no experience in IT (long story) so hopefully I can still start over.
@learnitfromwilliam
@learnitfromwilliam 8 жыл бұрын
Hello. If you hate coding, then web dev is not for you even though it's not 100% software coding, you still need to have a good grasp of code and how all that works. So what I read is that your interest is narrowed down to Networking. But what type of Networking? It's a broad term. You want to be a network administrator who runs and manages networks for businesses? Or specialize in networking as in Cisco terms where you're working with routing and switching and even VOIP? If either of those are what you desire, then start studying for those areas(certifications). A bachelors won't help and neither will a masters. It'll look good on a resume but in practical terms, it's all theory and whatever else they put you through in those curriculum's. Hope that makes sense.
@howardmathews5572
@howardmathews5572 8 жыл бұрын
Whatever section that gives you more freedom, because no one likes to physically work like a machine dealing with routers and switches and being called on late night for help (I know I sounded lazy lmao). As for web development/design, aren't there modern applications that make the job a lot easier, e.g. Dreamweaver and WYSIWYG stuff? To be honest I'm leaning more towards web development to kind of utilize my passion for design, and from what I understand a lot of employees out there use these softwares so they don't have to write every bit of code, hell I heard most of them rely heavily on readymade templates, do some copypasting and call it a day. Not to say I want to go that route, it's just that I think networking is a lot more exhausting in the long run with very less freedom. Still have that strong interest in it though, but it's a whole new topic and hopefully if I end up going for a CCNA it won't take very long studying it. I'd have to disagree on your last part, cause in my opinion a degree definitely makes your life easier in taking that very first step and "getting your feet wet". Thanks for your helpful info :)
@learnitfromwilliam
@learnitfromwilliam 8 жыл бұрын
Yes web devs do use programs to assist them in the design. Like I said earlier, web dev is really not coding or software design but entails a little bit of it. If you love design, then you may like web dev since it involves lots of creativity. As for the level of stress and work/life balance, that depends. If you're a freelancer, then you control your time. If you work for a large company that works on their internal web applications, then you might deal with some of the headaches. You could also work for a small web dev company where it's less stress and demand. So it really depends on alot of factors. Here's the deal. Most any job in I.T. is not a Mon-Fri 8-5. You can plan on 40-60hrs a week including weekends and holidays. It's just the way it works because as you know, when systems are down, all hell breaks loose and we are the responsible players regardless of time of day. And really, in any profession, most are not working 40hrs a week, it's usually more. Sounds very discouraging I know, but that's why my intro video says that I'm "raw and real". :)

As you probably know, most I.T. jobs are not very physical and you're sitting most of the time. So, I think you still have a ton of options so don't let that stand in your way. Hello. It depends on the exact BS degree and what field you want to manage in.

As long as there are H1-B visas there are no IT jobs that pay a living wage for legal Americans.

Hello Susan. That's a quite ignorant thing to say. Why are you so salty about this? Was your job threatened by those folks? It's a big issue for sure but to make such a comment is very far off base.

Help President Trump build the WALL and deport all H1-B visa’s out of the USA. I lost 2 awesome paying IT jobs at Fidelity Investments and another at the Stop & Shop grocery store to H1-B visas. In all 3 cases I was required to train my H1-B visa replacement.My advanced degree in software engineering was a complete waste of time.Don’t waste 1 minute of your time training for a career in technology until the H1-B visas are gone.

I'm very sorry to hear that. I recently saw a story on 60 minutes where they interviewed I.T. staff from a hospital in SF Cali that were all replaced and had to train their replacements. Exactly what you described. It's very disturbing and I don't see any slow down of this type of behavior from big companies. They are all about the bottom line and unfortunately, the I.T. dept always gets the biggest budget cuts. I understand your frustration but I wouldn't go so far to say that you should not pursue a career in I.T. because of this. There are companies that still value hiring and keeping employees who are from the states. If you're a software eng, you've got skills that are very advantageous and you will find work. Many ppl forget that you don't have to work for a big fortune 500 company. There are a ton of startups that are looking for talent especially in software eng. And many of them have remote workers so you don't even have to go to an office or be in the same state. Bottom line, there is a lot of opportunity so don't give up!

I think you should be a consultant, you talk too much

I would be a great consultant, thank you. But the reality is that I do not talk that much. I'm actually quite an introvert and quiet. But when you're presenting information on a whiteboard, you have to explain in great detail and that's what I do. That's the purpose of this channel.
