I'm taking computer engineering and there is just as much programming involved CE as CS if not more because you'll have to take a lot of courses requiring programming and you'll also learn Assembly language (which most schools don't offer in CS)... The major difference is that CE teaches you about the HW & SW while computer science focuses on SW

may I ask you what kind of math do you take? That is because I am very good at certain math such as Calculus but a little bit bad at trigonometry
@brown65328 жыл бұрын
Joseph Nasr I took calculus, differential equations, engineering mathematics. You'll need some knowledge about trigonometry for parts of the courses but you're mostly going to be differentiating and integrating (Sometimes the functions can trigonometric so you'll still need to know how to handle trigonometric functions)

>CS ask "how do I make computer accomplish a task?" >CE ask "how will computer accomplish the task?" >CS 'tell' computers how to process information (via "high level" languages). >CE study how the computer performs the processing of that information. >CS mostly care about the initial question (how will I describe this information/give instructions to the computer) and the end result (i.e., the computer has successfully accomplished the task). >CE care about the inbetween (of the above). I.e., the computer has the information and the (high-level) instructions. How will the hardware handle the information and carry out the instructions? And of course there's plenty of overlap. But if you had to draw a line, then those are the differences.

That's a well described break-down of the two. Thanks for that! Do you have either of those degrees? What's your background?

Thanks! I know this is a really popular question that often has confusing answers, so I thought I'd give my two cents. I'm starting my junior year in EE. But I spent my summer programming for fun, and now I don't know what I wanna do. So I ended up doing a lot of research into the differences between the two.

Very good video. It will certainly help out folkes who are confused on the subject, though I think the names of these degrees are pretty straight forward. Another interesting thing to mention is that in some universities these two degrees may be in completely different schools (faculties). Electrical and Computer Engineering is in the School of Engineering of course, but Computer Science is in the School of Science where they teach Math, Physics, Statistics etc.

I have my degree in Systems Analysis, Networking and Telecommunications I had to gain a working knowledge of all of those concepts under Computer Science. Along with technical writing (document design, intellectual property issues, request for proposals, technical instruction and user manuals, various reports, presentations layout and design), and Project Management (Agile Approach, Waterfall Approach, PM Process, Stakeholders, Risk Management, MS Visio, MS Access), etc. With a Systems Analyst you have to wear several different hats each one of the disciplines could be a career in itself. For example LOTS of code for relational database management, web design, so I had to learn Java, SQL, HTML, CSS, Dreamweaver, UNIX, Linux , Ubuntu. And more Networking (topology, access points, twisted pair, copper cables, fiber optics). I had no idea I would have to learn all of that. And I got a C+ in Statistical Math (I'm still in therapy) got a B in college level Algebra writing equations and formulas. I ended up with a pretty good GPA 3.33. But my biggest problem now that I have my degree is bridging the gap between college and a job even at entry level they want you to come in knowing how to do a lot. So I am taking additional courses where I can to sharpen my skills. Any suggestions on getting my foot in the door?
@learnitfromwilliam8 жыл бұрын
Hello. Wow so all that in a CS degree? That's why I hate degrees :) there's just way too much stuff they cram down over a 4 yr period so that you become a jack of all trades and master of none which doesn't work very well in this industry. You're right, we do wear many hats (jack of all trades) and most companies require that for several different reasons. I've talked about that in other video's. Getting a job...did the school you went to have any type of job placement assistance? Have you attended job fairs? I know companies want experience but if you have the degree, they understand you're starting from scratch and will hire despite what the job requirements state. Watch my video's on how to get an entry level job. There's two of them. That might give you some ideas. Lastly, narrow down exactly what you want to do in the I.T. space and focus there.

Good comparison, Just want to clarify as a Computer Engineer we had a lots of software subjects too. In fact we had 5 years course compare to 4 years in Computer science. I currently work at financial district in New York as a software developer. My advice if you choose computer science course is try to learn basic hardware installation, This will give you an edge when youre in real world outside the school.

+01001010 01000001 01010011 01010011 Thanks! I'm just getting started on my degree. I want to go into computer science, specifically software development. I decided to take a year to prepare to go in. I want to get an edge in my math so I won't have to learn all the crazy numbers and various forms of whatnot at the same time as the programming. It's intense already, but it's going to be worth it, I can tell. My CC offers a computer engineering degree path as well. I'm going to take your advice. I've added that and a couple other crossovers from CE to my list. Growing up, my mother and grandmother were both into computers. Grandmother worked in early hardware and CAD, and mother built them as a hobby for years. My mother had me help her build a few before I was 10, and used to hand me various language manuals while she was on her way out of the country for weeks and leave me little assignments to work on while she was gone, which she would then use on her business sites and that got me over my fear of catastrophically damaging everything and accidentally erasing the entire internet or something simply by touching it haha Thanks again :)
@0100-m9v7 жыл бұрын
Hi sorry for late reply. Which part of CE you think you failed. If you just like coding for corporate stuff then I think CS is the practical choice its shorter and I think most of your CE subjects will be credited. But if your passion is up into robotics stuff which involve embedded code directly manipulating the hardware then definitely CE is a good path.

In my country (Turkey), people do care about titles so "Engineering" sounds more classy among the high school students(lack of science importance). Lots of universities have CE instead of CS. But the education actually is CS in CE Departments. Great explenation !

I'm currently studying Software Engineering. My school, Rochester Institute of Technology, is one of few schools in the country that have the degree. People always tell me that my major and Computer Science are basically the same thing. They're not. A computer scientist focuses on building algorithms for more efficient computations. They also focus on making sure drivers are compatible with the OS and hardware, and assist Computer Engineers, who design the hardware. Software Engineering is building applications. Such as Google Chrome, Microsoft Word, business applications, etc. Basically any application you use on your computer or phone. We apply the ideas from computer science and use them in our design. It's also team oriented. You work together on a project. Usually using the agile method. You will learn more if you study in it. NOTE: If you enjoy programming, be a Software Engineer. It's easier, more programming oriented than Computer Science and Engineering, and it pays more than Computer Science. Computer Engineering pays the most, but that's because of it's level of difficulty.

+Joe Abi Nassif Hello Joe. I'm not exactly sure what the curriculum is for both degrees but I do know there is some overlap between the two. The best thing for you is to go to the university and seek out the college departments that are responsible for these degrees. From there you can then look at what is taught in each degree and make a decision. You can also talk to someone who is currently enrolled in those programs. Bachelor of Computer Engineering with minor in software engineering is the best choice. Pros:- Can be registered as Graduate Engineer and pursue into Professional Engineer (Ir. title)- Can further study in postgraduate programs either software specialization or hardware specialization- Can work in the same field with software engineer or computer science either developer or programmer- Can make side-income as freelance programmer- Yep, you can be a researcher too Cons:- Must be very good in problem solving and critical thinking- Must be good in mathematics at least in basic math can be considered- Must be good in EEE physics- Must avoid having a girlfriend/boyfriend

Someday I may put together a coaching package of some sort for ppl like yourself. But for now, figure out what really interests you in the world of I.T. Break down all the areas and research them. Some require a degree but most do not. It really depends on where you want to go in the field. Have you watched the video where I talk about the different areas of I.T.? That may also help. Also, go talk to ppl who are currently going through a CE/CS degree program and pick their brains.

I was actually talking to a few CompE majors. What a lot of them told me is that in Computer Engineering, you learn how the Computer works - both hw and sw. Computer Science is, generally, a much broader major that covers (the software side) of how the Computer works (a tiny bit of hardware too) but also tons of other topics in Computation. Based on your experience, does this sound accurate to you? (I guess the program is different for each school)
@JagjitBrawler8 жыл бұрын
Also, I think one thing worth mentioning is that like 70-80% of Computer Engineering grads work as Software Engineers. I actually heard that yesterday from Purdue University's head of Computer Engineering xD

in my school, computer engineering is just all the computer science classes with some electrical engineering thrown in. in other schools, it's completely different with much heavier emphasize on electrical engineering while throwing out some programming classes. In other words, it depends from school to school. In high caliber CS school, there are specializations like offensive security(dealing with penetration testing aka hacking in normal speak), mobile development, game development ect. these leave no room fro electric engineering so they are cut down. I chose CE instead of CS because my school is the former, it has no specialization courses in mobile app development ect this means i am taking pretty much all the classes as a full blown CS majors. Since I am still taking all the programming courses so why not also learn a bit about hardware?

That's a common question. I've seen a few ppl say that they major in one and minor in the other. So best thing is to talk to the school and inquire about that.
@ScumbagSesilu6 жыл бұрын
I'm a senior in highschool and i loved my computer science class which was all software, like making bank acounts and working with user input (such as recieving student test scores and finding averages and stuff). But i am also in robotics and enjoy (like robots) programming them to move to the input of controllers. However i hated the electrical circuits aspect of my physics class, so i wouldnt enjoy designing deep hardware stuff like motherboards. I would more so like to work the complete devices. I know about embedded systems class which sounds super fun. So i have no clue what to pick between computer science and computer engineering since i like both sofware and hardware. Help!

I don't know exactly but I can guess that you will have to take some high level math classes. Best thing to do is check with the college/university that you plan to attend and review the curriculum which will tell you those classes. If it's something you really want to do, then you'll make it happen if you put your mind to it. Don't let that stop you.

So let me get this straight, Computer Engineering is more of a hands on thing rather than something like Computer Science, where you are just coding software and other things like that. and computer engineering is what makes the computer work, while computer science is what makes all of the programs on the computer work?I'm right about to go into high school and I am really thinking about pursuing a degree in computer engineering. I enjoy everything about computers (besides the viruses and bugs) and I am really interesting in getting involved with computers, and learning more about them and how they work in general. although I don't want to just sit behind a screen and code all day, I really like to learn and do things hands on.
@learnitfromwilliam8 жыл бұрын
+Agent Blackman Hey Agent, your summary of the two is about right. If you don't want to code all day, then I'd suggest you don't follow any path that involves programming and that would include Computer Science. However, do your homework on which area of I.T. fits your personality before you commit to a 4 year degree such as CS/CE. Thanks for watching!

Can you please make a video about the disadvantages of those careers like for example sitting all day programming and be fat. Thank you for your hard work.
@learnitfromwilliam8 жыл бұрын
Brayan Vera That would be a good topic. My plan is to interview someone who works in those fields and talk about everything involved. Not sure when that will happen though. BUT..in general, most all I.T. professionals are working in front of a computer 95% of the time. Sometimes network folks have to get up and actually fix stuff so there's some movement...Can you get fat? Of course, but you can't blame your job for that. I'll leave that topic right there. You can deal with back problems, eye problems, carpel tunnel (from all the typing), not enough blood circulation in the legs...So you really have to be mindful of your posture, take care of your vision, get up at least twice an hour and move around for a few minutes, etc...Exercise! Just some thing to think about. I may have to put this in a video though, thanks for the idea :)

I feel like making processors, hardware, circuits board is being more and more automatic and robust. Therefore, it generates less need for computer engineer. And with the IT people, those servers, laptops, network are getting a lot kore stable and one Networking admin can now deal with much more servers than before. We haven't got to the point where AI can write software and design themselves so computer major is the road to go now.
@learnitfromwilliam8 жыл бұрын
I agree somewhat. AI will probably replace alot of what ppl do in this realm of IT (processors, hardware, circuits board) but the need for humans in I.T. will be around for a long time. What we need to understand is that there is hardware/software that require someone to write/code/maintain, etc so ppl will be needed for those jobs. Servers for example are not self sufficient. When they crash, a person needs to physically fix it. Just one example. But who knows, maybe in 30 yrs from now, all IT work will be done via AI or robots and we'll all be out of work in this space. That's why we need to be on top of technology and continuing to learn so that we don't get left in the dust.

Electrical engineering vs computer engineering what are the main differences
@learnitfromwilliam8 жыл бұрын
Good question Jesus. I don't know all that much about EE but there are similarities between the two in regards to the school ciriculum. However, the job roles are different. Working in EE, you're designing basically anything that has to do with electrical components. With CE, it's more specific to computer electronics/components.

@@learnitfromwilliam Computer Engineering and Electrical Engineering are almost identical majors. Hi Elleni, I'm not certain if AI is part of either of those degree programs. You would have to check with the school you plan to attend. What I do know is that AI is still in it's early stages so it will be limited info that is being taught in the classrooms at this point.

Hello. I would think so because the two are very similar. However, I don't know how much you study software in the comp eng degree so I would check that with the school. But also consider that you must have the knowledge and desire to work with software if you choose to go that route. You can also consider getting a double degree in both; if you can pull it off

+watata patata Don't double major. If you are confused between hw and sw, major in Computer Engineering. You learn both hardware and software (although, the sw is more hw oriented). Even if you don't learn that much SW in your program, you will be appreciated by any SW company (if you learn how to code well) since you have a hardware background, you will be able to help them write code that runs efficiently on hardware.

Hello I'm currently a college student majoring in computer science however I've had a tough time deciding between ECE and CS. In terms of a career I cannot see myself working behind a desk 24/7. My dream is to create something meaningful that could impact lives. I always get excited about virtual reality drones and new technology thinking of ways of how to improve them. As a child (before tablets were made) I drew pictures of them saying that this would be the future of technology. I drew detachable keyboards like the surface and said it would one day happen. I would like to be an tech entrepreneur but I would like to develop new technologies such as drones and VR, self driving cars, car tech and much more. I understand that creating these products have a million different majors (CS, ECE, Mechanical, etc). I was wondering what would be the best path. I picked comp sci over everything else because I said that innovation is all in the software once the hardware is created.
@cpoppinz128 жыл бұрын
I've been coding in college but I become easily frustrated with bugs and sometimes have no patience with code. I love working with my hands as well as thinking critically on ways of improving different technologies. (Ex. Thought about making VR work with drones to give people first person perspective). I'm very passionate about technology however I am scared picking one path over the other in fear of failure and hating what I do once I get out of college. Originally I wanted to be a comp sci / business double major to be an entrepreneur and create new technology for businesses and consumers. However now I would like to focus on one thing and get my mba later. I have internships lined up for the summer in the business field but I'm willing to give them up if I choose to switch to computer engineering. I love the idea that through code I can create something amazing but sometimes the process itself becomes hectic and cannot imagine myself hovering over my computer in a cubicle all day.
@learnitfromwilliam8 жыл бұрын
+cpoppinz12 Hello. That's a loaded question/comment :) You've got the drive to do good things and create but the question is are you creative enough to do what you want and have the hustle that it will take to be an entrepreneur? Coding is definitely not for everyone. It really is a job where you look at lines of code for hours and hours putting the pieces together. Keep in mind, that if you are creative like you say you are, you can come up with the idea for something and then outsource the actual production of the product to people who can actually make it. In other words, you're the visionary behind the "idea" but someone else builds it. Make sense? And for this, you don't necessarily need higher education. BUT that's entirely up to you. A TON of young entrepreneurs(founders of companies) of today in the tech field have degrees in Computer Science / Computer Engineering. So it's not uncommon. But it's your decision. I suggest you follow Gary Vaynerchuck. He's a WEALTH of information on what you are looking for. He'll fire you up, I promise. Check out his YT channel. Hope that helps.

After programming for 17 years, I would say that if you are thinking about CS, "I really hope you like shuffling data around in a database". Are there exceptions? Sure. But consider random businesses; insurance, sales, finance, etc. Why are the computers there? Overwhelmingly it is to manage data. Everything else (web pages, apps, reports) are 'skins' to that data. After working in this field for so long, I often look at homeless people lounging at the shelter and think "Its got some upsides..."

@learnitfromwilliam9 жыл бұрын
+Cris Gordon Hello Cris. The computer science degree curriculum will definitely have software design/dev courses. But that doesn't mean you have to go through a degree program to learn how to code. For example, if you wanted to learn a specific programming language, you could take a course on it and that would be considered a software dev course. OR if you wanted to get into developing phone APPs, you can take courses on that specifically. So it really depends on the direction you'd like to go. Hope that makes sense.

@learnitfromwilliam8 жыл бұрын
Hello. When you say computer repair, do you mean actually fixing personal computers? Ie, troubleshooting hardware, etc
@GamerSaga8 жыл бұрын
yes
@learnitfromwilliam8 жыл бұрын
Ok. Here's the deal. If you are having difficulty understanding the basic concepts of a computer hardware, then electrical engineering will make you lose your mind. Computer hardware is not that difficult. Don't over complicate it too much. There are physical components that make up the computer (hard drive, power supply, RAM, etc). That's easy stuff. Then you just learn how they all operate together and that's where some of the bits, bytes, kb, mb, gb all come into play and obviously some other stuff. There's alot of free info on the web to learn this so take advantage. I knew nothing about computers when I started school and those were the basics I had to learn. Hardware was the first class I took.
@GamerSaga8 жыл бұрын
i am curious how much more complicated is electical engineering compared to computer technician or lets say also programming.

Well, lets put it this way. If you were not good at math in school, EE will be extremely difficult. And that's just part of it. It doesn't compare to a computer tech, not even close. The studies might be similar but the jobs are different. This would be a great video but since you're under a crunch, the quick and dirty explanation is: Mechanical engineers invent, design, and build new stuff, while computer programmers/engineers use electronic languages to write new software to make the products interact. So very different jobs. What I would do is ask the university is they have what's called a "prospective student event". This way you can find out in detail what those differences are.

it really depends on the college and their curriculum. In my case, as a computer and communications engineer we learned a lot of development in many languages such as C/C++, Java, JavaScript, php, scala, sax/dom for the xml, etc... and we tackled the subject with a very nice approach and not just the basics. I would recommend engineering if you are in for the hardware for sure and as for the software it depends how much money and time you're willing to spend but I think engineering improves your learning curve. Hope this will help
@MalamIbnMalam8 жыл бұрын
Your friend was wrong. The difference mainly between Software Engineering and CS is the amount of theory studied. Computer Scientists do a lot of programming and not the "basics" of programming. You do a lot of programming like Operating Systems programming, Compiler Theory, Data Structures & Algorithms, Parallel Processing, etc. CS in my opinion is more challenging than Software Engineering. There are also specializations in CS that have Software Engineering.
