It constantly surprises me that this style of tying and fishing isn't more popular in the States. I've become less of an adherent to specific patterns - I think a slavish dedication to the classic materials becomes a limitation when the function and availability - and cost - should be a consideration. Soft hackles are remarkably effective, an excellent entry-level pattern for new tiers, and lend themselves to an enormous number of variations - either as an imitative pattern or as an attractor. I've been tying some recently with rust brown thread and the red-tipped feathers from a pheasant neck and breast on size 8 and 10 hooks, with great success. I've recently become a mentor to someone a few decades my junior, and he wanted to figure out why his expensive collection of dry flies wasn't producing for him. After 20 minutes on the water he caught his first trout on a fly rod - a 14" brown - with a soft-hackle on the lift at the end of the swing. Thanks for another great tutorial. ☮ ☯

Thanks for the input. I have found that the simplest patterns are often the most productive. If you go back and look at my "Shaggy Disgrace" pattern, it is one of the simplest ones I tie and yet I had one of my costumers tie him 6 dozen before the season started because he has that much confidence in it. Peace.
