I really like the cheetah style pattern of the seat. It really goes with the zebra-esque black and white pattern on the top tube somehow. Kind of a wild theme. Well done!

The Hooger Booger Comp LX was my first proper mountain bike in 1992. They were sold by Scott stockists and they had exactly the same spec as the Scott's of the day but were about £50 cheaper. Not sure about the built by Trek thing, I was told by the dealer at the time that they were built by Scott USA. The Comp LX retailed for £450 iirc. Before you start drilling the frame and welding bits to it I'd be interested in the frame forks stem and any other original bits you've got for it.

I had a stripped crank too once. I used a ball joint separator tool for cars and just used that to press the crank off. Cheap, bombproof and something you hopefully only have to use once.

For stubborn crank removal, I’ve found that an automotive race removal tool paired with a pneumatic impact drill works like a charm ! No drills, no stripped threads and 100% removal success

I put bubble wrap around the frame and crank to keep the crank in one place. Then I use a Park Tools crank extractor, this tool has a hole in the end. I hang full milk bottles from the hole, this adds weight and a cup of tea later the crank arm is undone

Those avid brake levers are the best. I love how they feel. Much better than basically any v brake levers.

Yes! I use these on everything and they're super cheap too. The model is "Avid FR-5" in case anyone is looking for them. You can often pick them up for just over 10€ for a set ✌️

Favourite pedals are my super cheap Federal command bmx plastic pedals i bought about 7 years ago. They've out lived two different sets of mtb pedals on my jumpbike/mountainbikes despite the abuse and distance traveled on the bike i use em on. The only reason i don't use em on my other bikes is they are a little slippy when wet. Grips i used to like death grips but much prefer ODI elite pros or longnecks with teh full ribs. So nice for long rides.

Nice build! DMR pedals (V8 or V12), turbo saddle, death grips are my personal favourite. Phillips screws on derailleurs: they're often not Phillips, especially on Shimano you need a JIS screwdriver and you'll find you damage a lot less screws!

Had a crusty old mtb with a long stem....bars were too flat and narrow. My fix was a pit bike bar, bolt on cross brace removed, 22 to 26mm stem shim. Then rolled the bars back a little bit. Not my idea, saw it and tried it, pit bike bars are inexpensive and it worked for me well. Nice build again, like the new stickers 🤙

I like thick grips and have been using pipe insulation tubing, just a couple of bucks from any hardware. They feel nice and they insulate vibration from your hands better than any other grips, K-Flex 1m Elastomeric Pipe Insulation, just cut any length your grips require 😊

I would recommend trying copper anti-seize over the grey stuff. It's a little more pricey but copper tends to last longer and does well with wet conditions.

Cool cat! It's such a nice frame. I think anything would look great on it. Over the years from the bikes I've owned Ergon grips and cheapy ODI grips have been great. My go to saddle is a Velo Wide channel D2 and I do like DMR pedals. I have to be careful with them if I wear shoes I don't want scratching up. I'm thinking of switching to some grippy Wellgo plastic pedals. I look forward to seeing how this cat evolves.

Wicked cool looking bike Craig. I love charge spoon saddles but the other saddles I use are Selle Italia Flite’s as far as grips I really love Clark’s lock on 202 for pedals I go with Rockbros flat pedals. Keep up the great work and stay safe out there.

The screwdriver you need for the B screw to avoid mangling the head might be a JIS pattern one. Certainly what Shimano used to use, a different 'pointiness' to normal cross or Phillips.

My go to parts for contact points are Oury grips, Brooks saddles or old Vetta saddles for a more low key build, and Odyssey BMX pedals or MKS pedals for a more vintage look.

If you want some obscenely fast 26er tires, check out conti crosskings. Racekings are faster, but have zero puncture protection. good if youre running tubeless but run crosskings if you run tubes. both roll great on pavement, better on hard pack, and are great on the soft stuff. Also, those screws on derailleurs are not philips, theyre (typically) JIS, thats why you mangle them when you try to adjust them with a philips. If you use a proper JIS bit in them, you're much less likely to strip them out. Easy way to tell if its a JIS screw is if theres a dimple on the head of it. My favorite contact points are typically ESI/Deity supracush/OURY/Lizardskins, my favorite pedals are the nylon ethirteens, and my favorite seats are FABRIC/chromag and bontrager because i can get bonts cheap through work.

How are the crosskings with punctures? I had Bonkers and loved them but I got punctures so often. Now I'm on some Marathons and the puncture problem is gone but they're slow AF 😂

Tried ESI grips once, would never change back again. They're foam rubber. And they have them in different shapes. I have pretty big hands, but I use the "race" version, they're slim. The "chunky" version actually hurts my hands after a while. Background: I've used the grips on multi-day trip, 10 days through the French Jura mountains, 6-9 hours/day in the saddle (Brooks B17) and only the last two days my right palm and wrist started to hurt and slightly went numb - still ok to ride though.

In response to "finishing bits", my trifecta is PNW Loam grips, crankbrothers stamp 1 large nylon pedals, and the rerelease selle italia flite 1990 saddle. I would put that combo on everything.

My favorite grips are the esi grips and ergons for more downhill mtb. Pedals I pretty much only use one up or crank bros. And saddles I like wtb and the specialized power.

So, The Ardently bars are just counter intuitive, you have effectively a 120mm stem, but the way they have the sweep is that when your hands are on the end, it’s effectively a 0mm offset, so it has very snappy steering, move your hands further up and it would effectively have a 30-90mm depending on where you put your hands. Imo if it was a +/- 7 or 10mm it would be an awesome bar. The whole length of the bar is effectively 725/730mm, if you cut it, you would cancel the 0mm offset feeling of the bars. That’s how I see the bars, they’re weird and decent, but I just need the +/- angle. 😅

Good bike - I bet it is perfectly adequate without the hydraulic disc brakes. I was surprised you could ride over a bridge like that. If you tried something like that in much of the US you would become roadkill.

Craig, if you spray decreaser on the headset will it not wash the grease out and cause the ball bearings to be in direct contact with the cups (ie metal to metal) I would have thought even vasalene is better than nothing Regards Andy

Have you tried Jis screwdrivers for the limit screws ? I’m sure that’s what they are along with brake arm spring tension screw s . Not quite Phillips or Pozidrive 😊
