Risen Star, who would have been an equine basket case if he had known about all the indecision surrounding his trainer and co-owner in the last three weeks, rebounded from a third-place finish in the Kentucky Derby to win the $536,200 Preakness by 1 lengths at Pimlico Saturday as Winning Colors, the Derby winner, joined Genuine Risk as another filly who was treated like anything but a lady in the middle leg of the Triple Crown.
While Risen Star, under a slick ride by Eddie Delahoussaye, moved through on the inside to take the lead midway through the run around the far turn, Winning Colors and Forty Niner completed a racelong bumping episode that effectively eliminated both horses from contention.
Winning Colors, trying to become the fifth filly to win the Preakness and the first distaffer to win more than one Triple Crown race, was keelhauled much the way Derby winner Genuine Risk was by Codex here in 1980, only worse. Genuine Risk was carried to the middle of the track as she made her late move at the top of the stretch; Winning Colors was bumped or brushed by Forty Niner, who had finished a neck behind her in the Derby, at least eight times all the way around the course.
Brian's Time, the colt who usually starts running in the state adjoining the one where the race is held, wore blinkers for the first time, was uncustomarily closer in the early stages and finished second, 1 lengths ahead of Winning Colors. After the first three, the order of finish was Private Terms, Cefis, Regal Classic, Forty Niner, Sorry About That and Finder's Choice.
Risen Star, considered to be little more than a good horse out of Louisiana even though he won five of his first seven races, started gaining legitimacy when he beat Forty Niner at Keeneland in mid-April. But despite losing by only 3 lengths in the Derby, Risen Star was the fourth betting choice before 81,282 at Pimlico and paid $15.60, $7.80 and $4 while earning $413,700. On a fast-drying track that was labeled good after being hit with intermittent rain for three straight days, the son of Secretariat and Ribbon ran 1 3/16 miles in 1:56 1/5.

If he got a trip like that in the Derby he would have certainly won the Triple Crown that year.

Great horse in my days .I was the best exercise rider meaning the trainers used me to breeze work on the wood letting the horse in the early morning out past the quarter pole and at the top the stretch idid it all and was young i went to. a riding academy and went into horse shows jumping fences out of the new England states. its a long story and went to Gulfstream park in Hallandale Florida in 1984 and bumped into a trainer from Suffolk Downs where i b started, like Stewart Elliott. I am retired dental laboratory technologist mening I worked for the dentist's upstairs and worked two other technions in a crown and bridge laboratory which is a long process its a great trade and craft just like the horse's i had it in me. I grew up in a unique small town of Lynnfield, ma. now im dealing with a rare autoimmune illness heritory which my grandfather had. Charly Russoso my spelling was wrong is a great trainer and jockey Eddy Delouhouse is a great rider i like the way he sits on the horse he is on .Gary Stevens doesn't sit to good on all of the horses he's been on veteran rider. Hello, ALL. I encourage anyone who enjoys watching the majestic creatures we call horses run, to see the excellent movie SECRETARIAT starring Diane Lane. Throughout history, certain sporting events (like the 1980 US Hockey Olympic Gold Medal wins against Russia,Finland) bring people together and remind us that, for all it's "sham, drudgery & broken dreams," there's still plenty of JOY to be found. Secretariat's Triple Crown run did that in 1973. American Pharaoh's successful Triple Crown created new interest in a classic, vintage sport and caused friends/neighbors to expend the effort to "get together and feel alright." Best Wishes.

I remember all the hoopla leading up to and following the race. Watching the race all these years later, while they sent Forty Niner to the front to make sure he got the lead, it wasn't exactly a suicide speed duel when you look at the fractions. What followed was interesting, as this race definitely took the starch out of both horses - Stephens stopped on Forty Niner after he finished so far back, and he came back to be a multiple grade 1 winner with a good 4YO campaign, while Lukas sent WC to a 49 length loss in the Belmont and only one win over the rest of her career.

Yesterday, the 2015 Preakness Stakes was run despite a near post-time torrential rain. It caused me to wonder about how Risen Star's sire, the majestic Secretariat, might have handled that much mud . . . probably like the shimmering champion he was. In any event, Risen Star certainly sparkled plenty here (pls. forgive the pun). We'll see if American Pharoah can break the Triple Crown drought (pls. forgive that pun too). Time for thoroughbred race fans to plan Belmont watch parties! Best Wishes to all.

+Charles Ray - Hello, sir. For some reason, this, just now appeared. As you already know, Secretariat won the longest triple crown race (Belmont) by 31 lengths in 95 degree heat. I respect your right to dwell on the losses, however, they are out powered by not only the number of wins, but the majestic way he ran. Just my view; to each their own. Best Wishes to you.

Good morning to you too, Charles. This is a sincere request (not sarcastic). I'd be interested in exactly how you utilized timing (vs. physical distance) to determine that Secretariat's margin of victory was only 25 length. Seriously. Thank you.

I have a Blood Horse on Risen Star in a box somewhere with all my Secretariat "stuff", and in the article they talk about Delahoussaye not feeling right about or disagreeing with the trainer about how to run Risen Star in the Derby. I think they told him to hold RS back but Delahoussaye thought diferently, but followed orders. I think the idea was even though in 11th gate, if jockey followed his instincts as rider, the outcome might well have been different, and thus a Triple Crown (?)

It would have been so sweet if a son of Secretariat had taken the TC, given how often Red is dissed as a sire. Well, at least his great-great-great-grandson won it.
@kathykeegan6504
@kathykeegan6504 5 жыл бұрын
@@salicemccool9268 Red didn't need to be dissed as a sire. He came along while there was already a super star sire in production. Northern Dancer was throwing stakes winners to almost anything he was bred to. No ND, Red would have taken over. As it was, Sec was one of the best broodmare sires in history. He also was one of the best nicks for Northern Dancer. Think of Storm Cat.

@@mariabykofsky4502 Any theory based on "time" is flawed and demonstrates a complete lack of understanding as to how horse races are run. Secretariat was beaten multiple times by horses who never set records. Angle Light and Sham whupped him in the Wood, Onion beat him easily, and Prove Out laughed at him. The last two beat him at Belmont after he won the Triple Crown. Where was the record-setting dominance? Slew would have easily taken the lead right out of the gate and run away from him just like Angle Light and Onion did.

Here is your superbly stupid comment: "Any theory based on "time" is flawed and demonstrates a complete lack of understanding as to how horse races are run" Your comment about "TIME" is the dumbest azz ever, because "TIME" is of ESSENSE in the sport of horse racing, and that's what is about! Secretariat still owns the Triple Crown many decades later, till this day, regardless of Onion, Sham and Prove Out, and others. Secretariat broke the Canadian record in his last race...Your reasoning if you are even capable of any, is obviously flawed...
