2007 Kentucky Derby - Street Sense : Full Broadcat

When Street Sense won the Breeders' Cup Juvenile last November by 10 lengths, the overpowering victory was attributed by many to a pronounced inside bias on the Churchill Downs dirt track.
In the 133rd Kentucky Derby on Saturday, jockey Calvin Borel returned Street Sense to the spot that had served him so well -- next to the rail -- and with a powerful, sustained drive, the two proved the earlier victory was no fluke. Rolling past one horse after another with stunning ease from 19th place, Street Sense collared the fast and stubborn leader Hard Spun with an eighth of a mile to go and ran away to victory in America's greatest horse race before a crowd of 156,635.
Even before Street Sense reached the finish, Borel, a jockey who mucks out stalls in the morning for his brother, trainer Cecil Borel, began to wave to the crowd with his right hand. Street Sense won the 1 1/4 -mile first leg of the Triple Crown in a solid 2 minutes 2.17 seconds, 2 1/4 lengths ahead of Hard Spun. Curlin, the lightly raced morning-line favorite, rallied on the outside for third.
With the victory, Street Sense ended the 23-year streak in which no winner of the Breeders' Cup Juvenile had ever returned in his 3-year-old season to win the Kentucky Derby. The horse also became the first 2-year-old champion since Spectacular Bid in 1979 to win the race.
"This is the epitome of anybody in the horse business's racing career: to have a horse that crosses the finish line first in the Kentucky Derby," said owner James Tafel, 83, who bred the colt and has been with trainer Carl Nafzger since 1985.

This was the most exciting Triple Crown I've ever seen when a different horse won each race. Usually when that happens, people lose interest in the Belmont, but Street Sense, Curlin, and Rags to Riches were all great and really put on a show for us.

I completely agree. It was a competitive bunch of horses. Though my personal favourite was Hard Spun and he was always somewhere in the picture too. I actually would put this series just under American Pharoah's as one of my all-time favourites.

Jockey Calvin Borel was a very funny showman with the outriders and the crowd in his all three Kentucky Derby victories! He is an excellent jockey and an extraordinary person! I admire him very much!

…I met him briefly at the Breeders Cup in 2010 and he was a super nice dude. When he took a leg up for one of the early races I said “Go get ‘em Calvin” as he went by on his horse…and I’ll never forget that smile ;)

Very talented top contending 3 year olds that year in Curlin, Hard Spun, Street Sense and, subsequently, Any Given Saturday. These guys knocked each other around pretty hard and ran with the maturity typically found in older horses.

Yes and Curlin and Hard Spun finished 1-2 in the BC Classic that year and beat the older male horses. SS was fourth. That hardly ever happens. It did when American Pharoah won, but it is rare when two 3 year olds finish 1-2.

I really felt that Street Sense was one of the best horses, all-around, to compete in the Derby. It is neat to see Teufelsberg who ended up siring Trinniberg. Hard Spun is also doing quite well for himself. Thank you for posting this. It was wonderful to see this again. BRIAN

Agreed totally. Palace Malice is quite a fine and consistent runner. Even Curlin's sire, Smart Strike, did not appear on the scene until he was three years old. I do believe that these sires will make an impact in time. Empire Maker seemed to be off to an inconspicuous start, but his runners are coming into themselves, also. BRIAN

Nafzger (born August 29, 1941 in Plainview, Texas) was honored with the highest honors of two different sports in the same year: In 2008 he was inducted on both National Museum of Racing and Hall of Fame in Saratoga Springs, New York and Texas Rodeo Cowboy Hall of Fame. If you havent watched the ABC footage of the 1990 Kentucky Derby, with Carl describing the race to owner Frances Genter, who could not see the race due to poor eyesight, I HIGHLY suggest you do. Special moment. Carl Nafzger is a great trainer and human being.

And don't forget Curlin. His babies seem to take get better as they get older (but then again, so did he) and many have declared him a failure because it has taken so long for them to get rolling. But man, can they run once they grow!
