I will always remember this race. I was 12 years old. I had watched a few of her races. And my brother and I had all but a bet on who would win...After that. I didnt watch a race for several years. I kept the newspaper clipping for well over a decade. I cried when she broke down and again when she had to be put down. She was and always will be my favorite racer.

Ruffian saved Barbaro, since she inspired vets to use a pool to awaken horses from surgery so when they kick around they don't get hurt. Ruffian kicked her stall once she woke up and that's what killed her.

That is beautiful! I would like to adopt that motto as well! “The main issue in life is not the victory, but the fight. The essential thing is not to have won, but to have fought well.” This is from a medal that was awarded to the great “Seabiscuit” during his career. It was for outstanding courage. Like Ruffian, he never gave up. I’m so glad I found your comment. I’m sitting in my car, in tears….

She was buried whole, just as Secretariat would be years later. A fitting tribute. She could not have been bred to Secretariat, I think, because Bold Ruler was his father and her grandfather, but imagine what that pairing would have produced if they had not been so closely related. Such a tragic loss.

I have watched almost every triple crown race since I was born. Granted I don't remember the first few, but I have a vague memory of Riva Ridge (age 4). After the Match, my mother swore we would never watch another race. I missed 1976, but by 1977, I took over the dial for Seattle Slew and have only missed a few since. My mother's first race after was Mine That Bird's Kentucky Derby. Thankfully, she waited until after Barbaro, or she might never have seen another after 2006.

I was 19 when it happened. I was a Ruffian fan, not just because of the whole male/female thing. Shenanigans, her mom, was a daughter of Native Dancer. The Dancer was one of my faves, just below Man O' War. I didn't like Bold Ruler, so it was completely on her Native Dancer blood and her own brilliance. The first Kentucky Derby I can remember was '63, when Chatuegay won. I wanted to be a jockey when I was 12. I looked up to Bill Shoemaker, Braulio Baeza, Jacinto, Eddie Arcaro. This effected me in such a way that I actually missed Seattle Slew and Affirmed. I didn't come back until 1980, when I saw a bright chestnut filly finish 3rd in the Wood Memorial and knew I was looking at that year's Kentucky Derby winner, weeks before the Derby. The fact that that filly was also ridden by Jacinto just cemented my renewal. I am STILL a horse racing fan and will be until I die. However, I want to see the horror end. I never have been able to understand people who sell to slaughter, or strike, or starve, or completely are without feelings for one of the most majestic and noble of animals. I still cry when I watch, or read, about Ruffian. RIP, o' wonderful one! You are still remembered and loved!

t a No, her side shoulder hit the gate ... there was birds on the track and miss place her footing when the birds toke off. Horses have thin legs it not hard for then to snap plus when horses run that use that outer front leg more for push sprint that is why most front legs are broken rather the hide legs

Mrs HorrorQueen her butt hit the gate on the start , watch the video. She came out of the gate wrong but then straighten out ( that could cause unbalance on her fragile legs which could have also been a reason to the breakdown. )

Susan Nunes most race horses do due to thin legs plus pushing and pressure on those front legs more then likely to snap I worked at race track in Edmonton the horse are a year old carrying a human and racing at two. Bones are not strong or full grown very hard on the body. TB horses are not big either about 15-16HH weight being 1,000

Ruffian's death signaled the eventual end of horse racing. Her wounds reflected many issues: training horses far too young, greed, man's pagentry of horses, "glamour," male vs. female.... Ruffian's death was not in vain. Though advances have been made medically as long as there is money, ego, and greed animals of all kinds will be used, used, used and then disgarded.
