Most people today don't know that Slew was bred to one of Secretariat's exceptional daughters, Weekend Surprise, and the result was A.P. Indy. A multi-million $ winner and one of the champion studs of the age.

I’ve got one too. A 15 hh bay gelding whose mother was a SS granddaughter. He was injured in training by an abusive trainer and the owners were downright stupid, just threw him out to pasture. Never been raced, but he’s very classy, dainty, and works hard. He was 4 when we bought him and put him into dressage, where he did really well. Jumping too. Sweet disposition, only bit me once. Beautiful trot

I was at Churchill Downs for the Derby and bet far more on Slew to win than I could afford to lose. When I saw him lathered up and sweating buckets in the Paddock I was certain I made the common mistake of liking a colt so much that I didn't bother to check him out before betting the race. Fearing the worst, I left the track, walked a few blocks home, and lay down on the couch to watch the race and take my medicine. Slew stumbled out of the gate, almost going down, but when he hit the first turn I was up and screaming for joy as he put the race away and began his glorious journey to the Triple Crown. Thanks for the memories.

Yep, "Big Red" was physical perfection personified. Literally no physical flaw on Secretariat. Sham was also a great horse, but unfortunately, Sham had to race against Secretariat, who was almost supernatural in its ability. That said, Slew was am amazing beast, as well.
@planegaper
@planegaper 4 жыл бұрын
I'm with you on Red, what happened at Belmont in 73' was just plain destruction, as Nack said he looked like the executioner going out to the gallows, Turcot could have hauled him in and won by a few lengths, maybe he was just along for the ride, he even said Sec wasn't in distress or working hard, and hand rode him.. no B.S. no drugs, and no horse has touched his time ... I'm glad they studded him early, as he would have been expected to win , and we get into Tiger syndrome.. and the horse gets abused.. He confirmed his speed with a few more races, went full locomotive at Woodbine, and lived a good life after.. no legacy of abuse, or breaking him down.. it's not "that" he wom the TC, it's "how".. what was unleashed at Belmont will forever be legend..

*FOREGO,* who had more championship titles than any other horse of the 1970's. Susan's Girl. Desert Vixen. Dahlia. Shuvee. Ancient Title. Cougar II. Davona Dale. Fort Marcy. Exceller. La Prevoyante. Chris Evert, mentioned elsewhere in the thread. Gallant Bloom. Ta Wee. All Hall of Famers who were active in the 70's, as are the other horses, Sham excepted, mentioned by you and L. Broderick. If you include the Canadian Horse Racing Hall of Fame, add in Kennedy Road, who won some big U.S. races, for good measure. John Henry was racing, but had not yet come to prominence. I did not realize until today Foolish Pleasure is in the U.S. Racing Hall of Fame, or that his 26:16-4-3 record is very comparable to those of Riva Ridge (30:17-3-1), Alysheba (26:11-8-2) and Exceller (33:15-5-6).

Some of you may have forgotten the wonderful thoroughbreds of the 1950s. The first being Native Dancer, followed by Swaps and Nashua. For me 1957 was the miracle year with 3 immortals - so to speak - who were foaled in 1954: Born Ruler, Gallant Man, and my favorite, the venerable Round Table. Ruler sired Secretariat and Gallant Man set the Belmont Stakes record time until Bold Ruler's offspring blasted it to smithereens. Round Table carried weight and dominated on the turf. He lived until he was 33. These 3 had wonderfully memorable names.

Round Table was outstanding on really fast tracks such as turf courses and west coast dirt tracks. He won on slower East Coast tracks, but his racing action was not as well suited to those slower courses. He was probably at his worst in the slop or mud, but still managed a couple of wins in those conditions. Round Table was tough as nails. An incredibly resilient and durable horse. They raced him constantly, often with huge imposts, but this never seemed to wear him out. That's why he racked up more wins in just 4 years of racing than any other great horse I can think of. He did it because he could.

I don't remember what year but I spent about 3 months re-landscaping Three Chimney Farms for my boss. Slew was there and I admired him from afar. I could have went up to the fence or the barn and saw him close up but I am afraid of horses. I was thrown and almost trampled as a small child so I have a respect for their beauty but I don't like to be up close and personal. We had finished most everything on the farm except Slews statue. We had finished the shrubs and mulch. I was on my knees planting the annual flowers, lost in thought- when someone big snorted in my ear. I almost had a heart attack as this thing rubbed it nose in my neck. I stopped everything and froze. It seemed like forever before a male voice said sorry we just wanted to see your work and the nose left my neck and backed off. I stood up and it was Slew and his handler. He had backed off a couple of feet so I was comfortable. That's when I met the real Seattle Slew. He kept looking at me with those goo goo eyes but I think he understood that I was scared of him. His trainer asked him if he liked his statue and he nodded. He reminded me of Will Rogers horse Trigger with the way his eyes danced and he could do yes or no with his head at command. His keeper kept him out at the statue for about 30 minutes and asked all kinds of questions-Slew answered them all yes or no but his kind eyes never left my face. I am still afraid of horses except from a distance but I gained a healthy respect for a horse named Seattle Slew.

Round Table won 43 races in a career spanning 4 years; set, 16 track US and World Records; won 17 of 25 starts while carrying between 130-136 pound, and is considered by many to be the greatest turf horse of all time. There are a few horses I have had the pleasure of watching run that were a combination of talent and a willingness to push themselves to the absolute limit. Ruffian, Dr.Fager,and Seattle Slew are the ones that I personally think best exemplify these qualities. Secretariat was the most God gifted horse I ever saw but these three went to the front and took on all challengers and never backed off until every ounce of energy was spent .It takes a special horse to run and win this way . Slew's race at Belmont against Exceller in the Jockey Club Gold cup was the greatest exhibition of heart and courage I ever saw and Dr. Fager carrying the weight imposts and still running on the front and winning in amazing times. Then Ruffian undefeated and never worse than first until that fateful match race she was a beautiful horse with an unmatched will to not only win but to annihilate her competition. James Keeney

He had to overcome the fact that Shoemaker waited too long to get him underway. Exceller had never won a race coming from anywhere close to this far behind. The result was that Exceller had to run all out with no breather for the final mile of a 1 1/2 mile race in order to collar Slew and win. Sheer guts.

+DeityFree Dee In my opinion Slew was a true gladiator, champion, He lost in California when most Horses after that grueling pace should have rested, not to mention he was tranquilized 4 times in about a 4 week period, Then he comes down with a viral infection that almost kills him. And some people on this page say he was way overrated, are you freaking kidding me??? That he was treated with kid gloves because he didn't run that many races as most 3& 4 yr olds. Well most horses probably wouldn't have ever ran after the Viral lung infection that practically took his life, Yet he comes back to beat Affirmed in 2 races, And some say Affirmed was exhausted when he lost to Slew. . And in one of his last races when he lost to Excelsior, who made a fast furious charge at Slew and just barely beat him , you can see that Slew was gaining fast again just before the finish line, He was truly Great in Defeat. So much bias on this Page, Oh well. The 3 months preceding the 77 Kentucky derby were among the most exciting of my sporting lifetime with all the press hype about Slew. I ist read about him in November of 76, this truly great muscular speedy stallion... Seattle Slew was not only a true Champion he was a fearless Gladiator. Miss you Slew...

[Paul Gallagher] Why the animosity??? So you know race horses from the past and this guy doesn't, unless you hate Seattle Slew. Every horse you mention makes me wonder if you ACTUALLY know their history like, who owned Mill Reef' and you should have put a comma in between Sea The Stars, Sir Ivor, Nijinsky, Dancing Brave unless you wanted to confuse this person on purpose. And I will add Seattle Slew is the ONLY speed horse I have had the pleasure of watching, who after cutting blazing fractions on the front end, could actually rebreak and open up day light on the field but then I have only been going to the track since 1972. Gee, I guess I missed watching Dr Fager run.

I've been waiting for years now for a movie to be made about the great Seattle Slew...but not a Disneyfied version of events ala ' Secretariat' ... but a top notch story (much in line with the film 'Seabiscuit'). I was at Belmont the day he won the Triple Crown and followed his racing career through its ups and downs and can't think of a worthier more compelling film project. Seattle Slew Hope Springs Eternal this horse's compelling story will one day be told.

@@darrinmiller4391 If you are implying LunarWolf94's implied criticism is unwarranted -- did you even listen/look at this documentary? Listen again to the section here from 23:54 to about 27:00. *It includes SELF-CRITICISM from both trainer Billy Turner and Slew co-owner Mickey Taylor, acknowledging they didn't listen to the horse after the Belmont.* Are you deaf to the criticism, direct and indirect, from multiple outside experts interviewed for this film, of the handling of the horse, with one commentaor saying it was "a terrible decision" to send the horse to California? The 1999 Blood-Horse book "Top 100 [North American raced, flat racing ] Racehorses of the 20th Century" (Blood-Horse is a MAJOR publisher on the U.S. TB industry) likewise mentions that Slew failed to get a well-deserved rest after the Belmont even though Turner thought the horse should get an extended rest after the Belmont. In other words, LunarWolf94 is only voicing what is WIDE consensus (arguably common knowledge) among those familiar with Slew's career. And which handlers do you mean -- his owners, or his trainer Billy Turner? Slew's owners were first-timers who thought they knew better than the trainer who had brought him through the Triple Crown undefeated. As per above, there is wide acknowledgment that the Taylors were foolish for overriding Turner's preference not to send the horse to the Swaps Stakes, run 3 weeks after the Belmont. Turner relented, but I think it was likely in order to keep his job (which didn't work, in the long run). Turner's firing antagonized me at the time. In retrospect I understand it, because aside from whatever discord he was having the Taylors regarding Slew's schedule, Turner was struggling with alcoholism, a fact I was unaware of back then.

I saw Slew at his Derby. I was in the paddock to see this shiny black, sleek, muscled horse. Until that time, I didn't know that horses knew they were going to win, but it was in his eyes. It was a look I will never forget. It was also in his body. More than determination it was flat out confidence, and his focus over rode the wild noise of the close-in crowd. He knew what he was going to do - win. Now I always watch the post parade on TV. I watch for the horse that has his ears perked forward, concentrating on where he is going, not mouthing his lead pony, not sweaty*, not antsy. Even with long odds, these horses always place, and most win. I thank "that look" of Slew's for this racing lesson. *Slew was sweaty by the time he got out of the tunnel, but I did not see that at the time.

A fine and dramatic documentary. It takes a great horse to win the american triple crown series. It's a hard call for a horse to go for those three races in such a short period. And despite a couple of later defeats he stands tall as one of the immortals of the turf.

The 70s were very special years in horse racing and I caught the horse bug early as a nine year old with Secretariat. Fast forward to when Slew stalked the triple crown. I could hardly contain my excitement when I learned he was to run in the Paterson Handicap at the NJ Meadowlands in 1978. It was such a thrill to see him approach the paddock with that wonderful swinging walk of his. What a handsome dark brown horse he was. I was more nervous than excited. I learned Dad placed a bet on him and I was fearful it would jinx Slew. When the race started my stomach sank as the field flew by. It appeared to be too fast, and a reckless flaunting of his speed. He was pushed to crossover the field into the first turn, dirt flying everywhere, but I was helpless and could nothing but stand there and worry as a starstruck twelve year old among the shouting crowd . Even though I was an inexperienced kid, I knew it was a dangerous strategy that could cost Slew. He won't have anything left at the end. Around the track they went, and then at the top of the stretch you could see there was a horse that was coming on strongly on the outside, Dr. Patches, (of Dr. Fager). They hooked up and dueled but there wasn't enough left. I was upset with the jock. The race finished in a flash. He lost and my heart was in my throat. The losing betters booed him as he took the long walk back to the barn ( but he looked strangely relieved to me!) and oh how I cried! How could they turn on such a majestic animal? The loss didn't end my interest and after all, what a fabulous tale for this bold horse. He was still my horse racing hero. Looking back on it I thought what if somehow, Slew had gotten a nice break after the Triple Crown? He most decidedly deserved a break, a vacation, that all racehorses must long for, that "Hawaii for Horses" somewhere, even if only in the clouds.

They hate him, he wins the Crown, they love him, he loses that ONE race after the Crown, they hate him again, actually have the nerve to boo a HORSE who only knows to run, over looks him with ease when it came to him and Affirmed, beats Affirmed, everyone likes him all over again. Yeah I wish he said "shove THIS" and gave them a nice steaming pile.

I think it is awful to boo a horse. They are only doing what they practiced and do not have control over their life. I agree that those booing should be ashamed of themselves.

Big Red still holds the triple crown records. Slew was a wonderful horse, I was living in Seattle when he had his run, but Secretariat still is the greatest.

Seattle Slew WAS the 1977 Triple Crown winner...and he did so with an undefeated record!

Didnt Man O War have to start without starting gates though? Its hard to not say Red was the greatest, but times arent everything, especially if youre a closer. You cant guarantee fast early fractions to have a shot at Secretariats records.

Think about this..."The ONLY horse to make it thru the triple crown "UNDEFEATED" !! and for many many years...and once retired was the best stud...there will NEVER be another horse that will beat SLEW and what he accomplished ...NEVER...!! Love you Slew and you will always be the best in my eyes.....can't wait to see you on the other side Slew....!!!

What would have happened with this horse if he had been owned by someone less greedy? So sad for him.

I had a Slew grandson about 15 years ago. He slipped in his stall and ended up with spimal cord compression due to it. At the time, Dr. Grant at U.C. Davis was the only equine surgeon offering any hope for my much loved gelding, which was basically replacing the damaged vertebrae with a titanium "basket" one. He had just done the surgery on Seattle Slew. I live close to a University with a great veterinary hospital/school. So after some tests and my gelding making it through them, Dr Grant agreed to fly to Oregon and do the surgery on my gelding. His fee was 20k plus expenses (not bragging, this mattters momentarily) I had spent 2500 thus far on other tests. The day comes and it was a huge deal for the students. I was given a seat with a window to the operating room. He made it, though he was never quite the same. Dr. Grant told me many stories about Slew, and his attitude....which was quite a big one apparently. One of them being rhat he would only allow his groom in his stall and nobody else. He gave me a hat and other swag from the owners themselves. Also, i had made sure to pay all expenses at the hospital. ... Fast forward a month or so, and my husband came out to the barn one day amd asked, "how much was Johnny's surgery?". I said, "2500.00. Why?". He looked at me, and said, "Are you sure that you didn't miss a zero?!"... Oops! Lol. Dr. Grant had sent a bill for 10. 99 for his McDonald's on the way back to the airport , and it showed at previous balance!! It was worth every penny. My gelding looked like Secretariat with the competitiveness of his Grandpa. Ill forever miss him. He was one in a million just like Slew.

Seattle Slew visited Longacres once. My dad was buds with the track vet. They gathered his poop in a cup after he left his stall. It was in our freezer for years. When i was tall enough to reach the freezer with a chair (i was about 5yrs old) i grabbed that poop, and dumped it out in the field with the mares poop. My dad almost cried! I will never live that down..
