Sparkling with good sense, schoarly without being pedantic ,soothing with a high degree of sensitivity and marked by the strong sense of honesty towards the highest traditions both represent_ the kind of luminous interview one rarely comes across in discourses about Carnatic music which are often marred by rancour...a marvellous initiative by Ms Sreeranjini. Thanks for sharing..happy Vijaydashami !

Such a voice meld... Amazing music... BTW, if male "musicians" discriminated against female musicians this way, how can you consider them musicians when they cannot be even classified as humans? The basic quality to be defined as humans in humanity... If they do not have that, I won't even classify them as humans, let alone musicians...

Absolutely blissful. I just admire Sowmya ji so much for her simplicity, for her being so authentic and unapologetic about who and what she is in the carnatic world which is mostly of yes sir, yes mam culture. Thank you Sriranjani for bringing this. Young generation like my kid is going to look upto you the same way I do about Sowmya Ji. Thank you also for including timestamps - so thoughtful.

Lovely interview, the frank opinions and apt questions. I found it very interesting that krithis were taught without notation. That must fine tune the ear and sensitive to notes.

That's really a wonderful interview with Sowmya mam. As Sri Ranjani said, as a singer and a teacher, I had learnt many things of how to handle manodharma and teaching a krithi with the meaning of the lyrics and at the sametime we should be happy and enjoy our singing. Thankx Sri Ranjani.

Wow! Insightful interview. This is rare in many ways because (a) the interviewer is a knowledgeable person so is asking questions that truly create the space for substantial answers, (b) the interviewee is a doyen with extraordinary and deep experience, (c) both are extremely well-spoken, and (d) the interviewer is asking the question and lets the response play out rather than talking over the response. Sangeetha Kalanidhi Sowmya is a treasure, and Sriranjani has done a truly terrific job in putting this together. I don't need to comment on the song because anyone with a scintilla of sensibility will grasp how lovely it is. Kudos all-round. On a different note, the discussion on discrimination was disheartening when one contemplates what all people have to suffer through. I am hoping there will be more such interviews that explore the behind-the-scenes aspects of carnatic music.

Excellent conversation between two learned experts in Karnatic Music. The questions by respected Sriranjani Santhanagopalan and the answer by respected Dr. Sowmya is highly informative and useful. I would have liked the conversation to be in full Tamil language. But, to my surprise, the conversation was in a mixed language. Very good and highly informative interview which could confidence in upcoming music artists.

Very nice interview. 60+ minutes long interview actually felt very short when listening. I liked the answer where Dr. Sowmya compares Violen and Veena and could very much draw an analogy to the term “resolution” used in scientific/ measurement devices. In simpler words can one say Violen has a lower resolution compared to Veenai?

Some relation between Kalgada and Kalingda. Kalingda is not in circulation now only few from Jaipur Gharana musicians perform it. Once again thanks Sri Ranjini for gifting us 9 melodious nights
