Nice idea. Almost like a hovercraft, but with better maneuverability since we are not completely out of water.

The electric boating industry should get together with the Caravan/Camping industry and develop a standard to deliver energy from the boat/caravan into the car so the boat/caravan battery can act as a secondary battery and extend the range while trailering. Because that’s what it will take to keep both alive, but especially caravans while we’re transitioning to EVs Because even as an EV-Enthusiast, I would still rent a combustion car to tow a caravan down to Italy… cause I ain’t stopping every 150km to unhitch the trailer/caravan to charge

Back when hydrofoils were the cool thing in the late 60s early 70s someone would have thought of this. Now I wish someone would make a lightweight metal air battery that could be swapped or recharged quickly.

Just an input for you Björn, both combustion engine and electric boats (around this size) has crusing speed at around 20 knots or 5 knots, so it is not so unusual that it consume the same amount at higher speed. This is where the boat is most efficient. Because between 8-15 knots (depending on boat size) the boat is starting to planing, and uses way more fuel/nm. Ex our boat (150hp) is running 5knots at around 0,9l/nm and around 1l/nm at 18-25 knots.. So it would be more interesting to know the different in consumption when the fan is off/on in 20 knot cruising speed.

@@courcheval Generally, surface effect ships are less weight sensitive than hydrofoils. That means we can carry more batteries and travel approximately the same distance in 20 knots.
@courcheval

@@pascaltechnologies so the cost advantage goes to foiling since it needs 3 times less batteries for the same distance at the same speed, doesnt it?
@4literv6

For the same size, weight and powerlevel though? I think this is slightly larger and much heavier vs the candela. What's interesting is ice boats in the candela size and cruising speeds can use 7-10kwh per mile vs just 1kwh per mile. Which matches with candelas claims of about 1/10th the cost to cover the same distance as a similar marine diesel boat costs. 😎

Is my math right that consumption is in the ball park of ~2000 wh per km?
@youtubebob123
@youtubebob123 Жыл бұрын
i got to about the same figure, roughly 0.5km/kwh. That being said though, i looked up consumption on fossil motors, and at 10knots, its about 1 liter per km! Significantly more at higher speeds (for V hulls). So i mean consumption on boats is just ridiculously high.

@@youtubebob123 Not surprising, with cars you have to deal with air and road friction (small contact area). With boats it's air and water, with the contact area with water being very large.

Interesting comment, what would be your expectation for an electric boat?
@kingprone7846
@kingprone7846 Жыл бұрын
depends on size and purpose of course. I used to be more on sailingyachts and this is of course not an extended trip boat with no cabin. Maybe I am being too harsh.I think if its a proper cruiser with a small cabin and a place to lie down/rest then Id expect 120 - 150nm minimum. I'd personally be more interested in boats which are solar powered with a much smaller battery. @pascaltechnologies

It's half to a third of the cost for a similar marine diesel ice boats consumption and the "fuel" for it is much cheaper to though.

Thats what "larger" (not that this is very big but, in comparison to a row boat) boats cost sometimes. Considering the EV drivetrain, its about the same ratio as a normal ICE car vs an EV.

the cells themselves are the same, but at pack level the cost is 4-5X car batteries per kWh. Once economy of scale and marine standards are more developed the difference will hopefully reduce fast.
