This is so true. Simple. Easy. Functional. Effective. Practice it. People cannot comprehend how much damage this does to fingers and soft targets. If you destroy the fingers of your enemy.... 95% it is likely the fight is over. If you hit the temple or Adam's apple with strikes like this.... the fight is 99% likely over. If you hit the outside of the knee with one of these strikes.... the fight is 99% likely over and so is that offenders normal walking for the rest of his life. That tip is where the power is.

Another excellent lesson. I'm glad you showed a more effective hand grab for the upswings. I never thought about it, until you pointed it out. So now, I'll practice it, until it becomes muscle memory. Muscle memory takes place because of the neuroplasticity of brain neurons, i.e. "neurons that fire together, wire together". That is the fundamental process involved in learning anything new, and repeated practice maintains those neuronal connections over time. Thank you Matt.

Great video! Thanks Matt! I had a knee injury a couple of years ago and needed a cane to walk. That's when I started getting interested in a cane for self defense. Your videos are the best of any I've seen on KZbin. Just ordered my first "basic" cane from Canemasters and am going to start working on the things you show in this video.

I’m 30, I don’t need a cane but liked the s Fashion of having one, I’m watching your video amazed on the combat you displayed with a cane. I’ll be sure to practice the exercise and drills, thank you for your hard work, time teaching us 🙏🏾

Your technique is excellent, well studied and no doubt bone breaking efficient. At 10:23 when you demonstrate the 'other instructors' upward strike (seen the vid) the guy was demonstrating (at least what I saw) a 'flick' technique to bust the balls of an attacker without telegraphing to the attacker that any kind of hit was coming. For all other strikes, his hand grip was exactly as yours. In any case, getting smacked with a cane with any kind of speed at all will put a serious kink in your day.
@pasquinilli4 жыл бұрын
Thank you! Yes! I also use the “flick attack” and maybe I misread it or misspoke. I often make mistakes! I have seen the type of strike where I think there is risk of losing the cane though. Maybe it’s two kinds of strikes? Either way, I appreciate your feedback, and I’ll always stay open to changing my mind.

I study and trained in martial arts since I had my first lessons with John Korab in the 1960s; unfortunately, I broke my back and then 20 years later crushed the repaired vertebrae. Although I had some Hapkido training in Vietnam, but would be interested in a home certification course in the cane.

Great video. Thanks. Cane is a formidable weapon. I keep hoping one day you will do some vids for a hiking staff. Like a jo but about 40". I carry a straight stick for self defense but I don't like to carry a "cane", even though I am 70, I don't like the look and I suspect younger people might feel the same. Also it handles quite differently from the symmetric bo. A bo staff is terrific but it looks weird on the streets. Doubt they'd allow it on an airplane. It also needs a lot of room to swing. In hallways, between parked cars, wooded areas etc a shorter stick is more useful. I carry a 60" staff for hiking, the length is useful on uneven ground. Also, there's no socially acceptable way to carry a pair of kali sticks or a baton. A hiking stick gets little notice. 40" is an interesting length. You can do both one and two handed strikes plus you get hooking and joint lock possibilities. Something to consider.

I will do one for the hiking staff! I have also ordered a shillelagh from Ireland. Similar in length to the Japanese Hanbo. I love to hike myself and often end up spinning and swinging my hiking stick most of the trail! Thanks for the request!

Great training!! Thank you! I just got my cane yesterday. I am a 52 year old female. My cane has a foam grip. It won't spin like yours. Can u show us how to use a cane with a foam grip please?

Not really. And you don't NEED to spin it for it to work.

I have a CaneMasters hickory cane with a very pointed, sharp tip on the crook. If I spin it, it catches on my wrist and hurts like hell. What am I doing wrong?
@redfaux74 Жыл бұрын
I think spinning it is stupid. It is flashy. Keep it simple. Keep it effective. Flashy can incur a "black belt, I'm tuff" reaction competition. Bad. My teacher HATED flashy spinning stuff. You NEVER put your weapon where you cannot see. You can put a friend's eye out, bang your tip on a wall, etc. You only strike your target. Only what you can see. You cannot see 90° behind you.

RE 4:00 I am not giving legal advice,but am simply stating what I have learned,heard or read for god knows where. Having a medical device cane, does have its risks for you to have. If one ever physically defends oneself with a cane and the attacker's attorney decides to file charges against one,one of two things could occur. The attorney/DA of the "bad guy" could find one had no legally recognised disability and will learn through many additional sources that one had it for a self defense protection aka (weapon). That is very likely to occur and it could cause one some real grief. Its a gamble,so just be aware. One may be able to get insurance to protect oneself legally or home insurance riders may available,but needs to check for themselves . Just be aware of the risks when one is defending oneself. Even if one is not found guilty of wrong doing ,just ones attorney costs will be staggering. I am not giving legal advice and Im not an attorney
@adamwhiteson68664 жыл бұрын
I don't think one needs a doctor's note to legally carry a cane. Even in London, UK where weapon laws are very restrictive, it's a matter of the individuals discretion. Some people just like to walk with a stick. I do. What weapons one is allowed to carry and when exactly they can be used is a matter that varies greatly with locality. Here in NM people pack hand guns.
