I still carry one and I am 75 years old and never leave home without it. Plus I carry an all steel Zebra pen or a Cross pen. I was the only Deputy in my department to ever stab a guy in the knock with a Gold and Black Cross pen and boy did I get in trouble for that. However, the me that does ten pushups a day is better than the me that does zero pushups a day. Yes, I'd be better if I did twenty pushups a day, but I may never reach that point. I'm learning to accept that if I never get beyond doing ten pushups a day, doing those ten is still worthwhile.

Take some courses in boxing and learn how to punch hard and even avoid or take some and get a flashlight (look at olight warrior series, if you have small, normal or large hands i recomend olight warrior mini 2, if you have huge hands, look at olight warrior 3 S). These are EXTREMELY bright lights, imagine the kind of blits that used to be on old photo cameras, but much brighter and you keep these continously on target, he wont see anything in the dark. If you combine that with punches you learn at boxing, you get the idea. And you can do the same kinds of punches as demonstrated here and you protect your hand.

Great video thank I also like the big black permanent marker for this purpose of self defense. But I rapped mine in duct tape so if it brakes I do not hurt my hand or hurt my attacker more then I want as this is my less leathal tool and do not want to cut up a attacker thus using more force then legally aloud against a person who has no weapon. I also rapped extra duct tape in the middle so it would be thicker and easer to grip but leaving the ends pointy like the pen is. It makes a great portable duct tape dispenser and I use the tape all the time then add more once I get home. Multiple use item, pen, tape dispenser and self defense tool. I also have a metal storage tube that has screw on cap on both sides with a glass breaker on one side and a whistle on the other side. And I rapped it with duct tape to the thickness I like and a long lanyard so I can pull it out of my pocket fast. I can use it like a roll of quarter, sharp glass breaker point or small flat round whistle point for impacts as well as swinging it and slapping like a flail as the duct tape gives it some weight but not enough to be considered a illegal black jack weapon. Multi purpose as I keep a couple emergency fire starter tinder waxed cotton ball in the tube so I can use my Ferro Rod fire starter that I carry EDC in my SAK tooth pick slot. You can never be to prepared.

I really like the pen. I also like the flash light (although I'm not sure how truly effective the bite would be) I like the weapon (sorry I forgot whet its called) which you hold in your hand and which gives you extra power. I especially like that it has two points on the sides to give you extra abilities although I prefer the steel one with two glass breakers than the wooden one. I do have a question about one of your earlier videos. you said that the trust is the most important weapon when using a cane. which is exactly opposite to what others say. and I don't know what to believe. on one side if you were fighting knife to knife the usually the first main objective is to first cut the fingers so the other person drops the knife then move in for a kill. However cane is not a knife and it works differently. I think lots depend on your positioning. If you are at close range I would use a thrust because like you said if you go with a strike a person might stop you at your shoulder. on the other hand if you are at larger range and have a lots of room to maneuver i think if you are constantly moving and swinging in different directions it might actually be harder to grab the cane than if you go for a thrust. also I think ideally you should have steel spike ferrule if you are going to thrust. That will not only allow you to walk on the snow but also do extra damage when delivering a thrust. I think being able to maneuver both with your footwork and with your cane and would allow you to go from different angles when attacking the limbs and you can chose to go for the limbs or go for sudden thrust. does that make sense? or is what I'm saying wrong? Its difficult for me to decide on proper technique because I'm very new to using a cane. and it seems that I get somewhat contradicting information on youtube
@VTPSTTU2 жыл бұрын
I've been using a cane for a few years. I don't like a hard bottom to the cane. A steel ferrule is great in the snow and ice, but many hard floor surfaces don't give the ferrule enough bite for the cane to be stable. On top of that, the ferrule damages the floor. I prefer rubber tips on my canes for walking. I realize that the rubber tip might be less effective during a thrust, but I still need the good grip to smooth floors more often than I need to make a thrusting strike. Another option for snow is to get an extra cane tip and mix some very coarse-grained sand with epoxy and put that on the bottom of the cane tip. The course-grained sand will bite into the snow across the entire bottom of the cane tip and not just in one spiked location. That keeps the cane from breaking through the ice and still gives great grip on the ice. Doing this will still cause the cane tip to scratch floors, but it won't be as bad. Doing this will also cause the cane tip to slide on smooth floors, but again, the slipperiness won't be as bad. None of this is really about self-defense. I've just had the unpleasant experience of having a hard-tipped cane slip on a smooth floor and leave me off balance. I hate to see that happen to others. I also hate to see others scratch up their floors when a good tip will protect their floors. I've also had cane tips that came off the cane when they punched through the snow. That's something else to consider.
@bartangel48672 жыл бұрын
@@VTPSTTU there are tips that are normally rubber but can be opened into spiked when needed. you will not be able to do this quickly enough doing the fight but you can have it when you are walking on hardwood floor. and you can switch when you are in the area where spike is more appropriate.
@bartangel48672 жыл бұрын
@@VTPSTTU one thing I do worry about is if the tip comes off. I never used a cane so I'm not sure how likely the tip is to come off when putting it through the snow. because this would be a problem. even if for me the self defense aspect is crucial the cane still has to be able to serve its other purpose.
@VTPSTTU2 жыл бұрын
@@bartangel4867 If you look at some of the cane videos, Matt shows some cane spins. In addition to a good warm-up for general training and a good way to gain some hand strength, the cane spins are a pretty good test of how well cane tips are staying on the cane. Once you get where you can spin your cane quickly, you'll learn whether your tips are on securely. Much will depend on where you live and what kind of snow you see. A fluffy, dry snow generally won't pull off a cane tip. A heavy, wet snow that is only a few inches deep is also less likely to pull off a tip. A heavy wet snow that is deeper can be a problem. Hard, granular snow will be similar to the heavy, wet snow. When an ice crust forms over softer snow, the tip will often catch on the crust as one pulls the cane from the snow. That catching will pull the tip off the cane. There's a product called "Shoe Goo" that is made to repair the soles of sneakers. I've used this product to refurbish the bottoms of my cane tips when I don't have extra tips at home. I can just spread a good layer over the tip and let it harden overnight. I can rebuild a quarter-inch surface on the top that way. I've also found that if I put a thin layer of Shoe Goo around the inside of the cane tip, I can make the cane tip fight tighter. Again, I just spread the stuff on the inside and let it harden overnight. In the morning, I replace the tip on the cane and do some spins to see whether I've gotten a tighter fit. If that doesn't work, another option is to try to put something over the outside of the tip to secure it more strongly. A hose clamp might work but would look stupid and catch on things. A little bit of mechanic's wire twisted tight with pliers might not show too much and might do the job. If I had to do that, I'd probably use a little black tape to cover the wire both for looks and to keep it from catching on things. It's possible that a zip tie could be pulled tight enough to hold the tip more securely on the cane.
@VTPSTTU2 жыл бұрын
@@bartangel4867 That's a good idea. I do some photography, and I have tripod and monopod feet that have a similar design. They have a hard rubber foot that has a metal tube inside the foot. The metal tube is tapped to go over a spike with a threaded spike. If one turns the foot one way, the foot moves over the spike and will hold better on hard surfaces. If one turns the foot the other way, the spike is exposed and one can push the spike into the ground to hold better to that surface. If you find something like that, I agree that it could work well. Obviously, you are right about not being able to change from one configuration to another in the moments you have before someone attacks you. On the other hand, the hard rubber feet on my tripods aren't that rugged. A good strike or thrust in a self-defense scenario could break those feet into pieces that would fall off. Then, you'd be jabbing someone with the spike because that's the part that's left. Matt will have to comment about whether a spike is really beneficial for self-defense. A hard enough punch from a boxer in someone's solar plexus can cause a knockout. Even with a rubber tip, a cane is going to be a much more concentrated force than a fist would be. In some ways, I'd rather the cane tip not penetrate an attacker's abdomen because that would decrease the distance between us. If an attacker is at the end of the rubber tip of my cane, the attacker is three feet away. While running the bottom ten to eighteen inches of my cane into my attacker might produce a devastating wound, that still means that my attacker is now that much closer to me. If I'm thrusting into the mouth or nose, the force will do the same damage regardless of a spike versus rubber tip. Likewise, a blow to the throat will break the hyoid bone either way and suffocate the attacker. In some ways, I think the rounded rubber tip might be better if I don't thrust directly into the attacker. A narrow metal ferrule might cause my cane to slide off the side of an attacker's face. A rubber tip might be more likely to catch on skin and pull on his face in an uncomfortable way. That pull will also slow his approaching me. Again, everything I've just typed could be wrong. I just feel that I wouldn't gain much advantage from a spike or a narrow ferrule.

IMHO, as a civilian, I will carry stainless Zebra pens and 2AA Mini Maglite and avoid carrying purpose built, tactical items like yawara stick , cannelure flashlight and tactical pens.(I have bought quite a few of the later in the pass). I do so for two reasons 1, Survive an attack on the street is just the Round One. The Court Trial is the Round Two, that we may have to anwser the Prosecutor or Defend Lawyer of the perp " As a civilian why you carry such "tactical " things , which is designed to injure? Are you intend to injuring others? Or having a vigilante mindset?" Sounds ridiculous but that's what may happen. 2, If one fly often, having such thing may invite unwanted attention from security personnel and have precious time wasted. Just my two cents...

In sort of a related question, I was wondering if anyone had any experience with something like a tactical pen or the short sticks in a restricted environment, like getting it through TSA. Good thought on the Zebra pen. I love the pens anyway. Kind of small diameter to get a good grip though. Tactical flashlights seem like a good idea. Use in combo with other things - pepper spray, or any other weapon.

Rap your tactical pen with the width and thickness you want using duct tape to have a better grip and you will always have a great duct tape dispenser everywhere you go. It is very use full to some duct tape and cordage with you as you will always come up with uses for them. And after going home just add a little more tape to replace what you used.

@@scottanthony3426 I had a friend who lose numerous "tactical pens" to TSA. He just bought regular pens that were sturdy and somewhat thick. They would serve the same purpose, but because they weren't obviously "tactical," they weren't confiscated. I'm sure that any of the short sticks would be confiscated.
@VTPSTTU2 жыл бұрын
Much depends on where someone lives. While there are numerous district attorneys who have been put into office by corrupt money in order to destroy our country, there are others who are still honest men and women who want is best for our society. If a person is minding his or her own business and must use a "tactical pen" or "tactical flashlight" in self-defense, these district attorneys are not going to prosecute. Someone who goes to a rough part of town without any apparent reason and gets into a fight is a different story, but someone who is just walking through a big parking lot and must fight in self-defense is unlikely to be prosecuted. Obviously, the defender can't keep beating the attacker for five minutes after the attacker is unconscious, but a legitimate act of self-defense is not likely to be prosecuted in jurisdictions with a good district attorney. Part of the solution to the whole thing must be for good citizens on juries to exercise their right to think. When the prosecutor starts asking those stupid questions, the jurors should roll their eyes. They should then vote "not guilty." They should make clear to prosecutors that citizens will no longer tolerate those kinds of stupid games from prosecutors. I don't look for the flashlights with beveled edges, but I don't avoid them either. I don't like them because they tear up my pockets. I'm willing to keep one in the car because I'm not carrying it in my pocket very often. If the prosecutor is stupid enough to ask that kind of question, I'm going to give him an answer that makes him look like the fool that he is. Personally, I also avoid "tactical pens" because they weigh too much in my breast pocket. I'm not against them. I just don't find them comfortable. I know that they are confiscated by TSA most of the time. I think that's stupid on the part of TSA, but I understand just getting a regular metal pen to accomplish the same thing and not be bothered by TSA.

If it is specifically designed for self defence and there is no other plausible reason for it you are going to struggle in court. On the other hand, why are you in court after defending yourself with such a thing? Are you going to the police? Is the attacker gonna call them on you? Where are you when this takes place? Why are you hanging around for police to come? All prey animals flee first, strike to deter second and flee again. There is very little survival advantage in out and out fighting. Flee first, strike back second (a flurry is quite fine), flee third. Works for animals works for us. If phase 3 is more striking it stops being self defence and becomes fighting. This is why improvised weapons are better than single purpose weapons.

This just came up in the Seattle area. A road rage incident happened. A guy refused to let a car in where the 2 lanes merged into one. The blocked out guy (stupidly) got out of his car and was walking towards the other guy. The blocker guy shot the other guy with a 9mm, which eventually caused his death. After various witnesses and conflicting stories, the gunman is being charged. He claimed that his life was being threatened and the guy had "something in his hand". When looking at footage of the incident, they were looking to see if the guy getting out of his car was carrying anything (like a weapon). Based on film and witnesses, it turns out the guy was empty handed. But this is an interesting example - perhaps of things to not do. Not sure why the guy (who was 64) got out of his car. But for us here following Matt, perhaps the "lesson" is that this is for SELF DEFENSE, not a side piece so you can get out of your car and "menace" someone who you were having a road rage/verbal with. Easy for me to say, having not been there, but this seems like an occasion where you just "dial back your macho card", stay in the car, and write it off as the other guy having a bad day or just being a prick. But if the 64 YO had gotten out of his car with a Hanbo, chucks, one of these little gizmos, etc, perhaps the shooter would have been justified under the eyes of the law. So I guess carrying a grayman defense weapon can put you in a spot where you may have to prove it was defense. I can only imagine it could get worse - with the plantiff suggesting you could have stopped sooner or used less lethal means. I guess we need to practice the knee and collar bone strikes too. This also brings to mind what Matt says - getting to a better position, loudly tell the guy he's too close and to move back. I've watched some Caner videos and they have the same thing. Think their first actions are get to a defensive posture and yell, "Back off!". Obviously if someone has brandished a weapon, it might be time to skip that verbal.

@@scottanthony3426 twice i have had a bladed stabbing weapon pulled on me. First time i was in the car. Passenger says "run him over". I put it in reverse and just went bye bye and then did a u turn and was gone. Second time his right arm was cocked and ready to unload and i had nothing but my surrounds. As he came up without stopping i took a southpaw stance and stretched out my right arm. I could see him trying to gauge the distance. He tried to reposition and i moved too to his left always keeping his strike hand furthest away. Then grabbed his shirt as he was pushing hard into my hand, did a quick pull as i stepped aside and sharp push away and let him go. He tried charging then to close the gap, but i kept side stepping as i moved to some construction bollards ready to grab one to keep distance. I wont go into other details suffice to say, he was subdued and We held him in a rear choke and two outstretched wrist locks for 20 minutes until police came and he got done for assault. He damaged a car and also assaulted 3 others before me and none of those 4 people wanted to prosecute Without anyone willing to say he assaulted them all the police had was the weapon things which is only a fine. As Ray Shoesmith says, people are asshole cause everyone lets them get away with it. In this case it was too much bother for them to write a statement and none were willing to go to court. I did write a statement and was willing. The prosecutor approached him with what they had and he was like yep, i did it and that was it, confession and no court. The real strange thing was, i had no adrenaline. When i was shown the cctv footage i was also asked how i stayed so calm. That explanation would take too long to write. - edit, when i southpaw stance i do not mean with raised fists i mean body position, slightly turned with my right side closest to him. My left arm was kept low but ready to be brought up if needs be. I was also trying to talk him down calmly. There is no calmly talking down someone on ice.

I mean I think the general martial arts belief is any thing can be dangerous if you know how to use if properly I think if I had my tactical pen even if someone said something If any one asks you say its a pen and it writes i wonder if any one would really notice unless your trying to take it on an airplane which of course than they will call it a kubaton and confiscate it I mean could it not possibly be deemed reasonable to have a glass braker? as I said it seem to me there is greater chance you could argue your way out of having the tactical pen rather than a kubotan thoughts?

Just get out there and learn a martial art. Stop being pathetic and do the work whatever your age and physique. The effort will pay you back in many ways, friends, fitness, confidence and coordination of mind and body. In the UK most of these will be deemed as an offensive weapon. Anything explicitly modified as a self-defence weapon is out, but a torch seems the best option. I enjoy these videos and the advice is great, but in the end one can't depend on the weapon and if it becomes one's sole focus one may forget to use all the other weapons the body has naturally, but which need to be serviced to keep them operative. If you're going to use a palm stick (Koppo), the best version is the one with a loop that just goes over the ring or middle finger, practically undropable, and satisfying to make your own.
